  1. Please consult each pitchers' underlying statistics before you make such a blanket statement.
  2. Thanks for the Marcum mention, both he and Jackson have to a large extent, been victims of circumstances. According to Fangraphs, Marcum has already represented $6.3M worth of value, far outstripping his contract, while Jackson still has a good chance in coming close to matching his contract value.
  3. Conversely, if the best argument for Ryan's plan is "dumpster dive for FA replacements, cut payroll further and hope", I'm not OK with the GM's plan. The draft for TR has thus far yielded 2 18 year old pitchers, which means probably 6 years of development- and then you probably will have a natural 50% washout rate. The 2 most recent AA acquisitions were made from a "position of strength", not many of the strength pillars left to trade from at the ML level, are there? And of the 3 acquisitions (counting Worley), the jury is still out, injury and inconsistency are currently plaguing the reality of this route coming to full fruition.
  4. That last line made me cry...
  5. This is the most encouraging thing in a very encouraging article. The least encouraging thing is the lack of top-flite pitchers and near-major-league-ready starting pitchers to contemplate. I hope Meyer comes back full-bore in August and gets the September call-up, but the Twins will probably, and justifiably, play it very cautiously with him. Did Berrios come up in the conversation but end up on the "cutting-room floor"?
  6. This "major improvement meme over last season" is destined for major rewrite, probably during the All Star Break. The Twins seem destined to come back from this current road trip of death with virtually nothing to show for their efforts except utter despair. The W-L record is getting perilously close to the White Sox, Astros and Marlins. Suddenly, the 8 games with the Sox and 3 with the 'Stros in the first part of August are going to have real meaning!
  7. Jose Reyes' incredibly quick release and precise, strong throw to 1st on Sunday, deep in the hole, while in full backpedal mode, was easily more impressive. But Machado's gonna be the Next Big Thing amongst AL infielders, probably soon moving to SS.
  8. He's officially one of us, now. Gardy called him "T-Bar" in the postgame.
  9. It's hard to project a leg injury 3 starts into the season, especially from a guy who ha had only one 15 day DL in his entire career up to 2013. Oh BTW, 5 QS out of 8 total gives him a 63% rate of starting effectiveness. The Twins staff has 32 QS in 86 games- that comes out to 37%. Kevin Correia? 9 QS in 17 starts-- 53%.
  10. It's all about the question that you "asked" of Terry Ryan. Questioning him on how he handles Walters is a complete waste of time, the "big questions" about the decisions made leading up to this ongoing disastrous season need asking, repeatedly, until they are finally answered. (Since this discussion, Ryan did just sit down over the weekend with Doogie... and he did shoulder some of the blame, but he still didn't answer the essential questions of why he did what he did and didn't do what he should/could have done, additionally.)
  11. Except by exposing yourself to the risk of fielding a crappy team, you lose fan support and eventually (in most organizations, anyway), you lose your job. That's the risk involved here.
  12. Grant Balfour is being tabbed as the replacement All Star for one of the starters who pitches next Sunday.
  13. Can I remind everyone yet again, the Rangers and Dodgers were both financially bankrupt in just the last couple of years. And look where they are now. No one is suggesting that the Twins can operate at that level, but the financial structure of Major League Baseball and the reality of the level of support in this market certainly suggests that they can take on far more risk they are currently willing to carry.
  14. "Well, see, that's really good too!, because, you know, we'll keep our really, really good draft position...and keep drafting really, really good prospects.... and our GM will keep getting style point kudos from the faithful Brethren for his super-power, death-defying avoidance of "imprudent financial risks"...
  15. I guess I missed the "Under Construction" signs posted at Target Field and on their website. The "message" this year, from Jim Pohlad on down, was that this was going to be a "pretty competitive" team, NOW, in 2013, not at some yet to be determined date down the road.
  16. John Lannan pitched 8 innings of shutout ball tonight against the Nationals. ERA is now 4.23. 8 innings and 4.23 are more than enough reasons to have signed, or traded for, Lannan, compared to the bulk of the Twins starting staff. (Has anyone gone 8 this year?) 5 of 8 starts on the season have been Quality Starts, including 3 of 5 since being reactivated. If fully healthy, and given the Feldman trade, how much could have been received in trade for Lannan?
  17. For this season at least, that would make a nice door mat at One Twins Way.
  18. That OF play by Hicksie had a Delmon-esque look about it.
  19. Imagine what he could have done batting right handed on "Carmona"...
  20. now at .201....our long national nightmare is officially over
  21. Weren't you around in the previous 2 franchise turns? ('86/'02) Those were equally exciting, IMO, anyway. The 2 top-end elite players are certainly mouth-watering, we need to see the Viola/Santana Ace-type pitchers stepping up to the fore- before I can get more excited about the Next Turn.
  22. It actually isn't hard at all. GM Bill Smith should get some of the credit for the horrendous 2011 season that gave the Twins the opportunity of being "qualified" for the #2 pick. Smith gets most of the credit for tabbing Berrios, as well, he was identified as a prospect under his watch, and the supplemental draft pick was created under his watch. Houston GM Jeffrey Luhnow should get some of the credit for drafting for need instead of drafting the BPA. Washington GM Mike Rizzo gets some of the credit, along with Smith, as they had been negotiating about the movement of Span to the Nats for quite some time beforehand. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro gets most of the credit regarding May (and Worley, gulp0, practically begging Ryan to take the deal for Revere.
  23. Didn't you mean "lower-risk contracts"?
  24. How about Plouffe playing Left Field for the Reds?
  25. Which posters? It would have been a positive boon to the franchise. And you are pretty much alone. Scan the list of articles from neutral observers that are praising the strategy. Again, the Cubs traded for a guy with a very similar underlying set of profile numbers to the guy they sent to the Orioles. And they got a possible turnaround reliever, besides (Strop pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings in the Cubs victory today). That's not just one, but 2 better-than lotto-ticket acquisitions. Plus, most importantly, $400, 000 in International signing money. You ask everyone to "go figure", this one figures out definitely in both the Cubs and Orioles favor.
