  1. You've used this canard before, it's still wrong. The Marlins may be hapless overall, but their SP was very good, ranked 7th in WAR, 7th in ERA, 6th in FIP, 5th in IP. Slowey just got beat out, after a very strong start, he went to the DL, the Marlins then went with their core prospects over Slowey. Of course, Slowey wasn't healthy in 2011 and 2012, which was why he was let go. And he returned to the 60 Day DL at Miami in July, durability is obviously Slowey's biggest drawback. His situation bears very little similarity to Hendriks, at all.
  2. Guilty of observer bias.
  3. In other words, in "discovering" these "facts", Ryan is admitting that his Plan A was a colossal failure on the field, anyway (Financially, they did just fine, hollowing out the team, failing to use short-term contracts for flipping purposes....... Going forward, I've got a strong feeling the financials didn't look nearly as good, but for the "found" $25M in media money, hence, "Time for implementing the Plan B!.... just ignore that we said it was next to impossible, just a year ago") .
  4. Moot point? I would wager that Ryan takes calls that eventually bring up Sano's status on a weekly, if not daily basis, as Sano's career blossoms further, those calls will become more frequent and more intense in the interest level (and the "what's it gonna take?" level).
  5. Like I said, when you're throwing Miggie as a comp to make Plouffie look better, you are confirming how truly bad Plouffie is in the field. I think we can agree that being in the bottom third of 3Bs is a pretty awful group to belong to, and "objectivity" and defensive rankings are a demonstrably sketchy category to begin with- as SABRmetricians are the first to admit that one year's worth of data is not very meaningful, certainly not statistically significant, even if it is "objective".
  6. Book it....on both of your good points.
  7. There was another thread on this topic. Besides the torn labrum in 2012 which still hadn't fully healed in 2013, he then had very complicated surgery for microfractures in his foot. Both of thes types of injuries are career-threatening, if not ending. With the enormous amount of money left in Kemp's contract, taking him on is somewhat akin to having an even more expensive Justin Morneau-albatross contract until 2020.
  8. It's hard to be worse than Plouffe at 3B.
  9. Says you. And the discussion about Sano specifically is ongoing, perhaps not a trade this offseason, but maybe down the road apiece, whenever his value is completely off the wall. At age 23 in his 3rd year, Reggie Jackson hit 47 homers and OPS'd at .1018, with a .608 SLG (those turned out to be his peak numbers over a 21 year career). It's difficult to imagine the level of demand Sano would generate if he put up those kind of numbers some 50 years later. We've been discussing this very topic on TD for 3 years running. Most Twins fans agree, it's going to be extremely difficult to return to the World Series without an Ace on the staff. The farm system/drafting process has been striking out for years on end in producing one. Another Rule 5 miracle acquisition due to an inefficient market seems highly unlikely. The international route is very speculative and potentially prohibitively costly. The FA market for aces is strictly for the big boys. Do you need any more non-trolling reasons to consider at how the Twins are in a tough place in trying to acquire an Ace and need to consider all options, even the toughest ones?
  10. Do you know something about Alfonso Soriano?
  11. That is heavily dependent on the hope that Sano abides by getting himself locked up in an early extension beyond his Arb years- he could be gone after 2019, or before via trade, if he and his agent feel MN is not the right fit. Pujols and Cabrera are indeed entertaining and great players, but the overall success (or the lack thereof!) of the teams they have played for have been heavily dependent on superior pitching (or the lack thereof!)..
  12. He's a 27 year old corner OF/2B/3B who has hit .900+ OPS in both AA (SL & TL) and AAA (@ ABQ) and features a .386/.382 OBP at those levels. Hits for power and can steal a few bases. Seems like an upgrade over some of the current rosterees, both at the plate and w/ his positional flexibility. Any thoughts?
  13. The two bolded statements are highly contradictory. If plays like Morneau's at second are somehow "banned", the game as we know it, is over.
  14. He is an NL pitcher, sure, but he's definitely better than Diamond. His NL numbers are mostly significantly better than Correia, and that signing has worked out thus far.
  15. Which makes him close to Pujols. Look, I hope the Twins never see the need to trade Sano- there's not a doubt in my mind that he has a chance to be the greatest Twins ever. And, of course, getting 2 SP prospects in trade, as in the case of Trumbo, would be absurd. But if a legitimate, proven, cost and years-controlled, healthy Ace was proposed in a package deal with extra value added, the Twins would be foolish not to at least consider the offer. Remember, if Sano does prove to be the player we all think he can be, the Cano hold-up of the Yankees will be considered small potatoes. Are we certain that the Twins will pony up when the time comes to lock Sano up for say, 13 yrs/$500M? (Don't laugh, the contract trends point to just that type of number for the best in the game by 2020 or 21- presumably when he'd be a FA at age 26/27).
  16. This kind of thinking can come back to haunt a club. Any potential proposed deal should be considered in the full light of day- a cost-controlled/long term/proven ace, in trade for a guy who MAY potentially be great down the road, just dismissed out of hand, that's what's silly. I hope that Sano has a long, HOF career with the Twins, but "believes" aint got nothing to do with it.
  17. With the apparent net drop in 2014 production for 1B/C combined, they need punch coming from somewhere, and it stlll needs to be acquired and/or some current guys are going to seriously need to step up, or this squad is going to have the offensive firepower of the 2013 Astros or Marlins.
  18. IOW....The Perfect Storm....Yikes
  19. Annnnd, the Mets just traded Rosin to the Dodgers! How did the Twins miss on this one? They already made a great trade for Butera with LA. Annnnd, the Twins themselves drafted Rosin way back BEFORE he was a Gopher in '07. Gotta like the 6'6" MN kids- too bad the Twins missed this one.
  20. That was my point. I was using the extreme hypothetical to illustrate that Terry has no need in signaling that Sano is available and risk the perception of a dilution in Sano's value and having GMs question why he would trade him. He just needs to wait for the phone call, and then when it comes, demand a King's Ransom.
  21. I'd have to ask you to show your math on that claim-
  22. But what if Ned Colletti is initiating the call and is offering Puig and Kershaw?
  23. Excellent point, the Brewers, Stros and Marlins all might have taken a bite there. I still wish the Twins were better at multi-tasking. True, there wasn't a lot of talent in this year's Rule 5, but there was talent available in their slot. They could have done what Houston did in selecting Patrick Shuster and packaging him in a bigger deal, or taken someone like a coveted talent in Thomas Kahnle on a flyer and make a deal with the Yankees to stash him in the minors or return him for another prospect.
  24. BA is not a very good hitting evaluative tool to sum up one's career, but an even worse one is SSS BA- in AA. I do agree with you, thought, that the Twins should at least listen to every "Ace + more" offer that come in for Sano.
