  1. I should have closed my comment with a smiley, but I'm sure you know I was being facetious, but some take lighthearted things too literally. I looked up the D-Backs prospect list, besides Owings, who we know is an early ROY candidate, they also have 3 other SS in their top 20, including one from the Upton trade who is also ready for promotion this year. Wow! Didi really is expendable, but I fear that the Twins would need a 3-way trading partner to get this done.
  2. The Yankees offense is actually worse than the Twins. Now that Plouffe is going both ways, I cold see Cashman projecting that Plouffie could reach both the LF and RF walls, which are both much cozier than Target. Plouffie would only have to beat out Kelly Johnson for a starting spot.
  3. The D-Backs pitchers are dropping like flies and they need catching depth.....but I doubt they'd go for a Brooks Raley/Eric Fryer package.......
  4. Yes, but I think Tobi assumed a bridge too far. Nunez is definitely above the ceiling of the others, there's at least a fighting chance that a clean slate for Nunez can yield difference-making results- and could really buy some time until the Twins figure out what to do about the position. I still say they should be calling on the D-Backs for the price for freeing Didi.
  5. Actually they didn't. Today was deadline day for Nunez and the Yankees. And it's entirely likely that the Astros or White Sox would have won the claim on him. He was added to the Twins 40 man immediately.
  6. Right, and I would wager that the body fat % on Ortiz was far less than LeCroy's. Spectacular failure on mis-reading the potential of a guy on the upswing of his career versus a guy who peaked the year Ortiz was released. I still tend to think that the Twins chose a "good ol' boy" in Lecroy over Ortiz, who they had concluded they hadn't been able to reach with what they wanted from him- and was no longer worth the bother in trying to continue doing so at a greater cost.
  7. Ask and you shall receive. This is the story I've been waiting to see written. Kudos to Parker! You have put the rest of the local media to shame.....as I would be stunned if this article isn't picked up and reprinted all around the country. No matter how it all turns out in the long run, thanks for getting the full scope and scoop of what is shaping up to be the early season story of the year. How did you get such great, insightful quotes? I'm assuming that the media, for the most part, has limited access to the players in-season. Cola comes across as an amalgamation of an Everyman, Don Quixote and Robert Pirsig (by coincidence, Pirsig's son in Zen and the Art...., is also named Chris). Here's a guy who's actually living what the Twins preach about playing the game the right way. I've already forwarded this out to all the athletes I've played with and coached over the years. Triumph for Cola no matter how this plays out, and triumph for Parker on a tremendous read.
  8. Drew started yesterday for the Dodgers. But Nunez could be half the "win" on the way to a "win-win". Read on: How about both less abstract and amorphous? Nunez's career slash vs. LHP: .278/.324/.418/.742 Would have been a perfect platoon partner with Drew, but that ship has sailed. How about Didi Gregorius, demoted by the D-Backs who have soured a bit on him and reportedly have placed him on the trading block? Just turned 24...and most importantly...bats LH. Here's his slash against RHP: .275/.355/.419/.774 Get her done, Terry and Rob.
  9. Who can forget the glory days of Eric Komatsu and Sean Burroughs?
  10. Fair assessment, all in all. But "IF"? At this point it's pretty evident that the time off from appendectomy surgery should have meant Florimon starting out in Rochester for a bit in the hope to get some chance of returning to .600+ OPS-level of timing at the plate. As of now, Ed Brinkman and Ray Oyler have aroused from their eternal rest in hopes that Florimon can somehow stay in the Twins line-up and seize the "Most Futile Hitting SS of All-time" mantle from their headstones.
  11. Amazing what having someone after your job right in your rearview mirror will do.
  12. Kind of overly-dismissive of (literally) a franchise-changing, horrible decision- one that even Terry Ryan willingly admits was his worst.
  13. Plus we now get day-to-day game comparisons between the guy who was released by the Twins so they could claim Florimon, who is also the same guy who beat out Nunez for a spot on the Yankees. This soap opera is going to get good.
  14. Welcome to the strange bedfellows. I'm surprised at the early indifference from the TD community- guess it's time to recalibrate that "defensive SS...makes no difference what he bats" meme.
  15. Give credit to the Twins FO for acknowledging the current problems at SS had to be addressed. In effect, Butera for Nunez. Now you have a veteran ML bat with a chip on his shoulder and incentive to prove himself worthy. (You, I and Terry Ryan were the first ones on this one, strange bedfellows, indeed!)
  16. It's striking how people not only ignore the prima facie statistical evidence and facts around the case, but also first-source evidence, from Gomez, Ortiz, and from Terry Ryan himself admitting it was his worst decision ever. Meanwhile, Solarte continues to cement his minor folk hero status as he reaches twice, scores a run and drives one in, in Yankees home opener victory today.
  17. I like it, but Gardy's guy, Zuke, gets the home opener. Kubel moves up to the clean-up spot.
  18. just a hunch, but I'm guessing that Hermann ends up closer to Bartlett if there was a WAR measure strictly for versatility, than say: a Mike Aviles, let alone a Chris Parmelee, let alone a Emilio Bonifacio, let alone a Ben Zobrist. There are successive levels and thresholds that Hermann has yet to prove he's even close to or can even realistically aspire to....right now, he's below replacement value, on a versatility scale or any other measure of value, until proven different.
  19. Yup. Sure, it could all end tomorrow, but Cola's story has a chance to be an even better one than Evan Gattis or Yangervis Solarte. And how can you not love a guy who turned down lifetime financial security to continue chasing down his lifelong dream? I had missed the part about Cola struggling in winter ball- he really was near the end of the line. John nailed it: I bet there're some great, untold stories on how he was able to keep his dream alive for 7 years in the Can-Am League.
  20. 1 minor league game at 3rd. Not qualified. And CF? 11 games in A+ ball, in 2010. Not qualified.
  21. Christy, Barty's ST OF had to be prettier than today's effort, right? Because no one would consider using him as a 4th OF if he had auditioned for the job playing at that level in ST, right? Today was nothing short of an embarrassment to the organization and unfair to Bartlett, for placing him in such a situation. It's a Godsent miracle that the Twins won the game, as they never would have heard the end of it had the score gone the other way.
  22. I don't want to make it sound like an overreaction, but the announcement that Arcia is bothered in the same area of the wrist as he was last August and September could lead to revealing something worse than a sprain or bone bruise. I had a friend who had come-and-go pain after a wrist injury and play with it for four months, only to find out it was a broken bone that required surgery, a cast, and then out for 2 months. Probably undue caution on my part, but get this one nailed down 100% right away, guys. And it appears to be an all clear on Willingham, but ouch, that was a nasty sound when he got plunked.
  23. That's probably the best offense right now, but man oh man, Cola in the OF last year was a bit, "adventuresome". I wouldn't mind Gardy trying it out, but at some point, aren't the pitchers going to stage an insurrection?
