  1. Over the last 7 days, Hicks is batting .357.....in all of 16 Plate Appearances.... I don't think anyone is saying "replace him with Grady." And this is not an issue about upgrades, it's about what's the best for the team, as well as for Hicks, individually. Sizemore possibly coming in is not a long-term move, merely a shoring up of a glaring lack of CF depth with a veteran presence, who doesn't have to play if Hicks is here, and can competently man the position if it's deemed that Hicks needs to decompress at AAA. Sizemore is blocking no one and could be cut without cost at any moment, or perhaps be a steal as a 4th OF, and even a trade chip if moved at the proper time. You talked about terrible long-term moves, but used extremely short-term stats to try to prove your point. The most important aspect of this whole situation, and really the crux of the matter, is making a fully-informed decision on Hicks.....clearly, having all possible means with which to make that decision must include the AAA option, as it has for many Twins players in the past.
  2. As what you said is true for pitchers- no argument about the number of AAAA pitchers scattered about, it's equally or more true for position players and the glovework. Defense, or lack thereof, is a huge issue in the minor leagues, and varies to wildly considerable degrees, as well- I don't think it justifies your minimization, but I can be persuaded if there's data to support your supposition. As far as "unsustainable harder contact" for your reasoning, I'm seeing many guys in the system with falling, or already very low LD%'s and good GB%'s who are clearly being hurt with much higher ERAs and H/9, than their FIP's suggest they should be getting.
  3. ' And there's the rub, where's the best place to learn? Here or AAA? Maybe it's a little bit of both, which is why the move makes sense. Sizemore can sit while Hicks is playing CF for the Twins, or he can take some reps in LF or RF.
  4. Because he's a quality veteran stop-gap and gives the Twins options for working with Hicks. And, as we discussed in another thread, because Sizemore's deeper hitting numbers reveal more positive indications just below the waterline of his slashline stats....his recent string of bad luck at the plate could very well change for the better, and then you'd have a really cheap placeholder that provides real OF depth that provides some short-term cushion until the cavalry arrive.
  5. Yup, it's been recent fodder in the New England media. They do have the option of calling up a prospect and/or making a trade for another OFer by giving up something from their deep minor league system. Plus Sizemore's longevity bonuses start kicking in (similar contract to Kubel), together, it might give the Red Sox just enough motivation to pull the plug.
  6. Googling the Lookouts, I see they were Senator affiliates from 1932-59. That probably doesn't help the current situation much, but given the previous Twins history in Nashville, I still like the idea of the Twins actively pursuing some sort of Tennessee pairing. Or getting in with the Las Vegas club (new stadium sounds interesting) and maybe considering the Jacksonville, FL franchise for AA in the Southern Lg.?
  7. Yeah, pretty suspect, I think. Sean Gilmartin's numbers confirm this, as well. His FIP is more than a full run below his ERA (2.36 vs 3.40) and his BABIP-IFB is at .379.
  8. Didn't the Twins have an affiliation with Chattanooga at one point? Nashville/Chatanooga sounds ideal (and throw E-Town in for scouting trip convenience).
  9. Brock and I were speculating on that yesterday. It seems almost mandatory that the Twins get this done, it would instantly stop the bleeding in the OF and immediately get guys like Santana and Hicks back on their career paths.
  10. And something will have to be done with Pelfrey soon....back to the 13-man pitching staff?
  11. I don't know if you know of PCL teams specifically, but I seem to remember that the Las Vegas AAA situation was in shambles, and the Mets ended up affiliating and/or owning the franchise. Given the proximity to Rochester, wouldn't it behoove both clubs to looking into an affiliate swap? And then, maybe the Twins might consider buying the Las Vegas club and strengthening the existing franchise and its infrastructure (good marketing opportunities with the hoteliers and airlines between Twinsland and Vegas) or consider relocation to the Central Time Zone?
  12. Yeah, that will be an epic event too, epically awful that is.... "clears throat" and then whispers in dejected desperation.... Correia
  13. Darvish-Hughes on Tuesday.....should be pretty epic (And besides.... I love games that come in under 2.5 hours or less).
  14. The 3.76 ERA/3.59 FIP from the Starters in May, so far, will certainly add a boosted shot of "luck" to bounce your way, along with the "fluky" outbreaks by the varied and assundry cast of overachievers and career year vets. Molitor's quiet, but obviously difference-making tutelage is imprinting itself on the field in players like Dozier and Plouffe (even Kubel and Mauer were difference-makers on the basepaths last night- which appeared to be a direct result of Molitor's baserunning tips)....he very well might just be setting up a scenario for Gardy to take a Kelly-esque honorable retirement from the daily managerial role by season's-end.
  15. ...70s Charger?....
  16. No doubt his future, if any, is as a Util OFer.
  17. Nope. Bonifacio is the Cadillac, Zobrist is the Rolls Royce.....
  18. As usual, your prose is the Cadillac of Super Moderators. I freely admit that I'm haunted by losing out on Bonifacio for the 2014 season, and that was only with the assumption that we could get him at his career numbers. I still awake in the middle of the night in cold sweats, with the stark realization that we don't have Bonifacio's 6-position flexibility, 33 Stolen Bases/year over the last 3 years and career .265 BA, .667 OPS hitting directly in front of Dozier and Mauer.
  19. You and Shane have hit on the most puzzling part of this whole situation. It was obvious from Day One, 2013, that his instincts in CF, especially in reading and routing to fly balls, was completely off-kilter. A professional scout even watching him only twice a month, at any of his minor league stops, should have had it revealed to him the obvious deficiencies in his game, ie, the ones we're seeing all-too-frequently-now with the Twins.
  20. Exactly what I was thinking.
  21. Sizemore actually hasn't been as bad as his WAR indicates. His K% LD% and Contact % are all better than his career averages, while his 2014 BABIP of .253 is well below his career .310 BABIP. He may normalize his luck enough to reaching some better hitting numbers before all is said and done. The Red Sox might have to move on: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/22/grady-sizemores-comeback-has-hit-a-snag/ If the Twins OF situation is still in a state of flux when and if Sizemore is released, I'd still urge the Twins to claim him and see if lightning can strike again. Until Buxton is finally here for good, the Twins simply have to build up some credible stop-gap OF options while Hicks' fate is determined.
  22. He played a full game at 3rd. The Twins obviously are taking it verrry slowly about trying him out at SS. He probably gets his chance when Santana inevitably cools off at the plate.
  23. Ahh....Kenny Wilson....we hardly knew ye....
  24. Guerrier's return only makes marginally more sense that forcing Bartlett onto the roster. It's like someone at One Twins Way in the offseason planning meetings wrote "We need to re-establish a veteran presence that exemplifies the Twins Way" as a bullet point for changing the culture, and by golly, they were going to follow through with checking off that bullet point, whether or not it actually still made sense in the light of day.
  25. Absolutely right. I hope the Twins soon come to their senses, and have thought out the situation with respect to Florimon, and drawn up a specific action plan for Santana with the Wings.
