  1. Ohh, they've gone many fathoms deeper in some of their roster logic this spring. Tommy "the Minimizer" Milone comes to mind, for one. "Throwin BB's" Blaine Boyer is another, Timmy "Lean Cuisine" is a third.
  2. That quote was the most disturbing and deserved it's own mention in the article headline. It sure seems like he's set the bar needlessly high for flame-balling college RPs. Check with how other teams do this, Terry.
  3. http://i0.wp.com/auntiebeak.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/out.jpg?zoom=1.5&resize=359%2C272
  4. Much to your disappointment, Halsey, but Escobar might soon be turning Oswaldo Arcia into a LF Wally Pipp.
  5. Thanks alot- I haven't checked Jeremy's site lately as it appears it's been dormant over the offseason. As I suspected, there aren't many "must adds", but you could make a decent case for at least a couple position players and a couple of arms who might have good enough years that makes it worthwhile for the Twins to strongly consider protecting- plus breakout performances by some of the top guys who force their way on. More roster turnover coming.
  6. Yes, but the "Plan" for Meyer had been set up before Antony took over, and presumably that had Ryan's imprimatur all over it. (I wish Ryan would have just picked up the phone to the Cardinals for some consultation on the matter).
  7. Agree with you both, there are going to be multiple roster days of reckoning- both in-season and in the next offseason, dead weight in the case of some Rochester arms as well as some replacement-level role-types both with Rochester and the Twins (finally). Spycake, do you know how many prospects are on the short list for "must-adds" next offseason?
  8. I agree with everything, but fear after Tonkin gets the first crack, the Twins will go through the litany of AAA 40-man roster suspects before Burdi and Reed get a shot. Without roster space clearing from this very cluttered roster, I have trepidations that Burdi and Reed won't even get a chance for a September debut/trout. Gardy didn't have enough influence to get Meyer up last year, perhaps if Molitor and Allen double-team Ryan, they can wash the pitching prospect myopia out of his old scouting eyes.
  9. That was my prediction on the day they signed him, seemed like a classic Ryan move of recognizing undervalued arms. I had my doubts then, and even more so now- but I have to give props where they're due, Ryan's proved us all wrong before.
  10. I predicted T-Bar would be out last November, and shuddered when they re-signed Duensing- I think his effectiveness is just about done. Besides giving Thompson a better shot, they also should have looked at other LOOGY FA options, and shielded Gilmartin from Rule 5 and given him a shot at the role.
  11. I think we all agree that there's a reason he's a DFA and potentially on the waiver wire, he's definitely not an instant JD Martinez panacea. Given the Twins state of affairs in the OF though, he is intriguing enough to find out if he could be a better short-term bolsterer.
  12. Yep, you're right, but he is 4 years younger than Robinson and yep again, his pedigree suggests that there is still enough intrigue that his hit tool might finally spark, definitely can't say the same about Shane. And although I like the Twins thinking aggressively about starting out Rosario in AAA, he never proved competent, let alone mastering of AA pitching, so giving Brown his spot in AAA might be the best for everyone, and as you said, go a long way to taking another step to avoiding the Twins CF Follies of 2014.
  13. I'd think this is one that would be a no-brainer to put a claim on at zero acquisition cost. Hit the ball a ton in college ball, 1st Rd. draft pick and on multi-Top 100 lists after 2 years in pro ball, accelerated to the Giants #1 prospect, pre-2012, hit the proverbial wall in AA, and it looks like he's finally begun to figure things out after two seasons in AAA, hit well in a very brief call-up in September for the Giants.... listed as having plus-plus speed and a plus defensive CF.... and still only 26. A change of scenery might be just the ticket for Brown. I don't see the downside if his glove is as good as advertised. Nice immediate insurance in CF- at least one, or more likely both, of the current guys seem destined for failure. No guarantees on Hicks turning it around right away- if ever, and what if Buxton isn't ready until 2017?
  14. This scenario would be the best lemonade out of lemons story of the year- "The Accidental Wade Davis" effect?
  15. This is the kind of guy that Terry always finds within his quantity over quality offseason bullpen shopping methods and ends up making me eat my words about a March 31 "Adios!", at least in the short term. And what's not to like with Boyer at the human level? Thanks to Parker.
  16. Great, then I'll mark you down as all in favor of more of the same until further notice? ie, Deduno, Darnell, Johnson, Walters, Albers, DeVries, et al, ad infinitum.... And besides Hughes, who else has been Mr Consistency in the Twins rotation during this decade of pitching futility? And yeah, calling up Gibson in 2013, clearly the best AAA option, instead of continuing the pointless starting pitching shuttle shuffle between non-major league entities in the midst of a pointless season, Liam, Samuel, PJ, Pedro, Cole, on say, right after his May 8th outing for Rochester in 2013, would have had Gibson throwing for the Twins when his arm was still strong. It would have given him at least 9 extra starts with a much fresher arm, and accelerated his acclimation to the majors.
  17. Seems like you created an excellent potential polling question and possible quiz contest. (And personally, I think we all better hope for the best, but prepare to be livid).
  18. Coming off of 0-2 and then 1-2 counts, and then crushed a low and away breaker.,, gotta like that.
  19. Are people still easily fooled or fooling themselves on this "we'll see them in two months." It ended up essentially being 3 months before a call-up for Gibson two years ago, and pretty much after he had used up his arm in AAA in first post-TJ season. There was no reason not to call up May and Meyer by some time in May last year. And besides the obvious choice of Pelfrey as the first SP to jump into the rotation, maybe add Darnell or Wheeler to that list- based on previous precedent.. (The excuse used in the past for not calling up Gibson, May and Meyer was "consistency", this year the Twins apparently are looking for "minimization", we'll have to see who minimizes best down in AAA).
  20. Boon to the team, indeed. And the biggest beneficiaries will be Alex Meyer individually, and the Twins pitching staff and Twins win-loss record collectively- if mastering this pitch helps Meyer reach his full potential- and does so that much sooner. Allen spent years and years working on this pitch in the minors with the near-ready Tampa Bay pitching greats of the recent past. Meyer should be spending the next chapter of his apprenticeship in Minnesota, not Rochester.
  21. One of the critical keys to success for Alex Meyer is nailing down that change-up of his as a consistently effective third/fourth pitch. It doesn't seem very helpful to be 1000 miles away from the guy who might be the difference-maker in getting his major league career jump-started.
  22. Great post, Nick.... and... Yeah, Shane, don't stop posting on stuff like this. Humorous banter aside, Benson was/is actually an interesting case study. Yes, it's only baseball, but careers in the sport can careen in wild and unexpected directions. One day your The Anointed One and the next day you turn into Just One More guy barely hanging on to your boyhood dream... and then some find ways to resuscitate their aspirations in an unexpected and less glamorous role, but still hanging onto the dream...
  23. I believe you nailed it.
