  1. And there's a helluva lot more to worry about with the latter. The bullpen is chock full of smoking time bombs at the end of their fuses, Boyer's fuse is lit, we just don't know if it's a quick fuse or more of the slow-blow variety. Whatever the case, classic Terry Ryan bargain-bin success with red-headed stepchild RPs (pun intended).
  2. This is why he's an intriguing prospect, but leaves some confusion and cause for concern about his ceiling. Here's a capsule summary after his rookie league debut: "Baseball America's pre-draft scouting report noted that he 'entered the spring as a potential first-round pick, but his stock has fallen as scouts have been disappointed with his inconsistent velocity and command.' Gonsalves signed for $700,000--which is $150,000 more than third-rounder Stuart Turner and $320,000 more than fifth-rounder Aaron Slegers--and had a very impressive pro debut, posting a 0.95 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 28 innings split between two levels of rookie-ball. Gonsalves is 6-foot-5 with a low-90s fastball and developing curveball, which along with the strong debut suggests plenty of long-term upside." So he appears to definitely be a better prospect than Milone, but "How much Better? is the question. He certainly needs a promotion ASAP to start answering that question. He's making a mockery of the Midwest League.
  3. Pretty much agree with all of this, I have a strong hunch, particularly based on Vargas' quotes as he was leaving town, that he and management are far from being on the same page, and that his individual work hasn't yielded the desired results as of yet to the point that it was time to ship him out for a while (and recall that Vargas has gotten advice from David Ortiz in the past). And sure, Vargas isn't a blue chipper, but there's a lot to like in his potential package at the plate, and for a team that will have some looming payroll dollar issues a few short years from now with their actual blue chippers and re-upping some vets, he will be either- more valuable in a cheaper for longer scenario, or more marketable in trade if he has more available low wage service time, should he blossom in the next couple years.
  4. I think this is quite possible, even though the team left for Pitt on Monday morning, perhaps Vargas put in some BP and video work before he left for Rochester. But I do fear that the Twins now have incentive to keep him down for service time reasons if he doesn't immediately start addressing the issues that they've sent him down to work on. Presumably, Arcia comes back to replace Bernier at some point soon, the Twins seem pretty happy with the new more defensive-oriented roster, perhaps not room enough for both Arcia and Vargas?
  5. And don't they have the major league rule about adding a pitcher for a DH? (I see on the Red Wings twitter that this was the corresponding transaction they made, I'm not sure why Vargas couldn't have been activated in the second game, if he had been interested in playing in it.)
  6. I hope they also come to the realization that Neal Allen might be just the guy to work with Meyer.
  7. Nothing is clear in this situation, the timing of the demotion, where Vargas was and what he was doing on Monday and Tuesday... If he was down just for a quick adjustment to his approach at the plate.... Those are all the jobs of the beat writers to be curious enough to ask about. His reporting date should have been included in the stories about, and quotes from Vargas, as he was leaving town.
  8. This vid makes me wish the Twins had been able to find a parcel of land to build TF on the Mississippi. And especially now that we're in the process of installing a bevy of boppers more than able to achieve splashdown on a regular basis.
  9. I'm assuming he would be a FA after 2017. I'm also surprised that there has been no push by the media boys to do something more drastic about this situation. I go back to Gardy's proposal in 2014 ST to bring him north in the pen, and have him working on his mechanical issues with the best the organization has to offer. And just this last weekend, we had a big article interviewing all of the Tampa Bay stud pitchers amidst heaping all of their highest praise for Neal Allen's innovative approach that has led to countless success stories with young, aspiring high-potential, arms. With all that is invested by this organization in Meyer's success, it's somewhat stunning that Meyer is not working with Allen on a daily basis. I mean, Meyer's already demonstrated mastery of AAA in 2014, something has obviously gone horribly wrong with him in 2015
  10. Seth's not here.
  11. Double secret probation? Clearly, there's every reason to believe there was more going on there with that move than was made public. Perhaps, Vargas had some other business to attend to, still, surprising that our enterprising beat writers haven't queried the Twins braintrust on his whereabouts.
  12. Yeah, the folks who were thinking it might only be a week or two appear to be way off... I thought he at least would have played in the night game last night, plus as Seth noted, Rodriguez went down early in Game 1. If he isn't immediately mashing, we may not see him by the end of June, the Twins will then have service time incentives to keep him down for 2.5 months.
  13. May I ask that you do a weekly scan of guys who aren't performing, your words appear to have magical qualities. (Maybe start with Joe Mauer, and work your way down?)
  14. Spot on, I've been wondering the exact same thing. So, since apparently Time is not of the Essence, it's NOT going to be a quick turnaround thing to make a quick fix on his swing?
  15. Yup, he breezed through early on, with tons of strikes in varied locations.
  16. Liam Hendriks, like many other current and past ex-Twins is currently a Canadian refugee, and has revitalized his career as a RP for the Blue Jays: 13 G 17.1 IP ERA 3.63 xFIP 2.92 SIERA 2.41 K/9 8.83 BB/9 1.56 H/9 5.7 BA .180 Maybe there's hope for Milone, yet?
  17. I'd like to think TR, Paul Molitor and Jack Goin read my blog, even though it was all in good fun: Shane Robinson, lifetime in PNC is .323 BA .758 OPS 144 OPS+ He's worked 2 BB in 6 PAs vs. Liriano, seting Nolasco up for the big bop to follow. (And with Escobar and Rosario ready to PH for them).
  18. He beat my forecast, too. He became a little wild in his last couple innings, but still came up with big pitches to get out of trouble. I like eyewitness reports about hitting 94 on the gun, and especially missing so many veteran bats. My Hu skepticism dropped quite a bit today, as I pondered below, this shakes up the whole prospect leaderboard, and puts everyone on notice.
  19. Yep, and add in a low K, heavy flyball guy who might find exaggerated success in O.co, AT&T or Petco (his HR/FB rate is 50% higher with the Twins than previously).
  20. Agreed, except I would place the word, "wildly" inbetween "far" and "exceeding".
  21. Rodriguez appears to be seriously hurt. But Vargas isn't replacing him in the box, Hanson is. Is Vargas not in Rochester yet?
  22. Wow. Seth do you have the link handy to your prospect ranking write-up of Hu? He keeps this up, he's going to convert a ton of believers by this afternoon.
  23. Dealing! K/B 29/12
