  1. Hicks is doing what we hoped for, not necessarily what we expected. And that's still only a "good" glove with an OPS+ of 74 (which actually hasn't improved month over month). Rosario's OPS+ is 100. ZiPS projects Buxton to hit for 95 OPS+ with a much better glove- ~2 WAR in 380 PAs. Seems to me that Hicks would best serve the Twins as a 4th OF.
  2. Michigan commit Jonathan Engleman looks like he has a man-sized body at age 18, and looks pretty good in his video. Despite being 6'4" and 210#s, he ran a 6.75 60 yard run. Thoughts on his prospect status/signability?
  3. Tristan Pompey's video actually looks very intriguing, and he's not so "little", @ 6'4", two inches taller than Dalton. Is he a big-time college commit and the Twins are going to kick the signability tires?
  4. The Twins seem pretty insistent that Plouffe is their 3rd baseman and Sano "isn't ready". It's hard to see them trading Plouffe before the deadline, almost about as much as it's hard to see them cut back on Mauer's time (plus he's still decent vs. LHP). Hunter has dictated his own spot in RF from the day of his signing. That amounts to some serious blockage.
  5. Very few are suggesting that Plouffe be jettisoned in place of Sano. I think we're talking about Sano adding 2 WAR over the status quo. As of now, there are 3 guys in the lineup with positive WAR (Rosario and Hicks are right at +/- replacement level on minimum reps).
  6. If you don't think Sano could possibly be a a 2 WAR player over the last 3.5 months of the season, there's really nothing to debate. Most of the rest of us can easily forsee that potential level of contribution from the #6 ranked prospect. And what's the downside if the Twins are forced to pull the plug on him after a 15 game tryout?
  7. So you're ready to move to another position/bench/jettison Plouffe, then?
  8. And the Twins are in the thick of the pennant race, despite only 2, maybe 3, quality hitters. Their hand is being forced as we speak- IF, they want to take their best shot at gaining a post-season berth.
  9. Buxton comes up... the Twins go from "good" to elite in CF. And he solves the problem of the hole in the lineup at leadoff. Big difference.
  10. Sano's recent play, and the Twins lack of hitting, is effectively forcing the Twins hand now. And Plouffe has a better hit tool than Dougie, plus he's likely a better glove than Sano. What if the "time to play there in the majors" doesn't come until Plouffe is a Free Agent? Would "we" be willing to wait until 2018?
  11. Yep, way back upthread, the Fangraphs article is cited showing how Correia's chances for Super 2 are now between 0.0% and 0.1%. So for Sano and Buxton this is not an issue. (Arcia is about a week from certainty). At worst, Sano should be batting right before, or right after, Arcia in Rochester within a week or so. Let them share DH and OF duties, and may the best man win the Twins roster spot sweepstakes (deadline ASG break?).
  12. You don't even play one on TV?
  13. But still, a team change from Atlanta. And the height/mechanics issues. And his first year spent in the Cards pen. And the Twins surely had data and film on Meyer and his control/mechanics issues for his 3 years at Kentucky (BB/9 was over 6.0), or why make the trade for Span, if they didn't have a plan?
  14. Thanks Parker. You do the work so we don't have to. And looking at the spray chart, I count 15 LD to RF, I'm guessing 13 of which came in April. He's really been a different hitter since then, right back to his old bad habits of 2014, when the shifts really began to take their toll on his production numbers. Mauer LD% April: 36.1% OPS .804 Mauer LD% May/June: 16.5% OPS .598
  15. You actually answered your own question given the data (which I find completely plausible). Looking back for the last 7 seasons, there are usually only a couple qualified hitters who top out with a low-to-mid 30s in K%. Think Davis, Carter, Dunn, Reynolds- plus most of these guys walk at a much higher rate- every one of them with double digit BB%s. If Walker were to K in the 45% range (likely), he'd never make it through a season, hence his prospect status is so sketchy.
  16. Cardinals' examples useless? Based on lots of history, I'm thinking the Cards would have developed an active plan for Meyer, adjusting for height. Adam Wainwright (6'7") at age 22 had a K/9 of 9.0 and a BB/9 of 4.0 in AAA, numbers for which they put their plan in place for age 23 back again in AAA, he was a full-time reliever for the Cards at age 24, with 61 appearances, before heading back to full-time starter at age 25. Assuming Meyer is 100% healthy, get him up in the major league pen, there are at least 3 guys for whom he's clearly a better option right now.
  17. Molitor agonized about this in the post-game. I hope it made him nostalgic for his past days as manager with only a 12 man pitching staff.
  18. And don't forget the Southern League All Star game...
  19. Boyer was a great story for May, but the calendar rolled over, and it looks like pumpkin time has arrived. I was hoping he could keep the smoke and mirrors going a little longer, but I would bet that every team on the schedule now has a perfectly edited 15 or so minutes of video detailing precisely how to attack him.
  20. Unfortunately, high ankle sprains can take a long time to get right. I had the chance to overhear Michael talking about his situation last month to a Twins official, it didn't sound like he was anywhere near ready to start rehab, let alone get re-activated. Perhaps Seth knows if Levi has been getting reps in, either in Ft Myers or Chatty.
  21. I expect (hope) to see Polanco leading off tomorrow. If he can hit or reach 3 or more times, hopefully that forces both the issue, and this whole process, on a fast-forward track. Should this scenario somehow come about tomorrow... Can Molitor be pragmatic enough to lighten up on his Escobar fixation to make this happen? Doubtful, Polanco needs to play every day.
  22. Gallo and Pederson's numbers don't really make your case.*** And none of these guys are coming back from a year layoff.^^^ *** Sano's combined time at AA gives him an OPS of .887, which tops both Gallo and Pederson. ^^^ Since April 29, his OPS is .983. Just before their final call-up, here are what 3 of the game's best produced: Machado AA: .268/352/.438/(.785) Pujols A+/AAA: .274/.330/.453/(.783) Longoria AA year one: .267/.266/.486/(.752) Longoria AA/AAA year two + 7: .294/.393/.504/(.897)
  23. What's the rush? Uhh, did you partake of this evening's game? No-hit by a 36 year old junk-balling career journeyman? Even Molitor was second-guessing himself a bit in the postgame, by not going to a RHPH for Rosario with Plouffe the tying run at 3rd, of course, his options were indeed limited. Sure, the overall slump is likely short-term in nature, but even if/when this team is firing on all cylinders, it's probably not going to be enough to stay competitive all year.
  24. Hopefully, Eddie is on paternity leave, not maternity leave, or is there something we don't know about him ('her')?
