  1. Gibby and Hawkiconk both disappeared. hawkiconk was going to Okoboji on vacation but I thought he'd be back by now. Didn't Gibby have some overseas trip planned? I have some inkling of a thought but can't get it to gel.
  2. What really awed me was a story last year about the fan base he built and how great he and his wife are to them (and the fans to the Hawkins'). Just sounds like such a great family and such a great player relationship with his fans.
  3. Get tossed, Gardy! Twins need a win!
  4. Going back to this spring's threads, I found the following: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/9925-will-this-team-be-the-worst-of-the-last-four-years/page-3?hl=+games%20+2014 With a really good (predictive) post from Kwak: Last year's team collasped in September--finishing 4-20. While there were several reasons, it is reasonable to conclude that "fight of the fight had left the dog." Simply 'battlin' as they did the previuos 5 months should have added 4 wins--closing at 8-16. While a poor finish, that is far more typical of what happens in baseball for "a rough patch". Conclusion: Adding those four wins and another four wins would not indicate "a better team"--just one that that is more typical of losing teams in MLB. A big factor to guage this season's wins would be what did the othe other four teams in the division do to change their teams? A huge portion of the season is against division opponents. Changes in opponents will definately affect the season's total of wins. Summing up: the betting line is reasonable (71) because last year's team basically threw away September (would they do it twice?!) and Cleveland (maybe KC) won't have the same success as 2013. But, we shouldn't conclude that winning 71 indicates improvement, but simply the vagarities of statistics.
  5. That's just it. The Twins have 40 games left. Do I expect them to win more than 11 of them? Yes. But I would have expected the same thing last year. If they continue winning at their .451 pace, they should win 18 and finish at 73--89. Can they miss that 90-game loss barrier? Only time will tell. The big advantage for this team to me is that Mauer seems to be healthy now as opposed to going on the DL with a concussion last year. But I'd like to see this team prove something and win MORE than 18.
  6. Congrats to Cuddy. Colorado has been good to him. Purple Row ‏@PurpleRow · 8h Michael Cuddyer is the third player in MLB history to hit for the cycle in both leagues, joining Bob Watson and John Olerud.
  7. I don't want to jinx him either but whatever happened, God Bless Him.
  8. Apparently the rain delay didn't help the Twins pitching.
  9. Just saw hoping for 1:40 start time on Twitter.
  10. I finally succeeded in loading Windows 8.1. I think MS has pulled 8.1RT for now because of all the problems it caused. Now to spend my afternoon re-installing programs and trying to get back to where I was on Thursday. Oh joy, oh joy! Any scheduled start time?
  11. Congrats to Vasquez. And it is great to see that Berrrios' sore shoulder was just that - sore. It's a long season. Nice recovery by J.O.
  12. Well, I do believe that they are now doing better than last year's record!
  13. Good for Perk! In my new commitment to add a M*A*S*H reference to every thread, I'll quote Charles Emerson Winchester: "Have you ever sampled the delights of fresh octopus?"
  14. Redeemed himself for that errant throw.
  15. I rarely get as far as dessert but when i could really chow down, we always finished with some kind of ice cream drink. Tradition.
  16. Need a little comfort food tonight, Chief?
  17. See. you need to come to Iowa for steak. Archie's Waeside, Le Mars. Absolutely no ambiance (they have Christmas houses, etc. plus wood paneling all over.) But dry aged steaks that everyone swears by. And it'll cost you about 1/2 (or less) of those Chicago prices. http://www.archieswaeside.com/ordereze/Content/1/Summary.aspx Personally I find the steak that people declare to be excellent to be mushy but that's because I like "chew" in my food. (I hate purees -- I'll wait until I'm in the nursing home and can't chew anymore).
  18. I think I could give up meat (and have done so for various periods of time) but I just can't give up dairy. And although i don't use a dozen eggs in a month, I still want them when i bake.
  19. Good for her. My nieces eat far too much of the stuff made out of soy that mimics meat, etc.
  20. I know. Interestingly although I know that they and other types of soy are vegetables, I don't really consider them to be so. My nieces are vegan. Every time I am at their house, I come home and crave green, leafy vegetables.
  21. And they aren't playing in Oakland? Thought that was the land of water main breaks, sewage breaks, etc.
  22. Also, people tend to associate "soybeans" with animal food despite the popularity of "soy". Lots of recipes with edamame floating around nowdays.
  23. Because people will pay more for edamame.
  24. So Chief was really close with his "soybean" answer!
