  1. The Twins plan isn't necessarily to contend in 2013. It is to be good enough -- or make enough moves even if that is retaining people -- to sell season tickets and put butts in the stands (and buying food, beer and merchandise). That is the bottom line -- creating enough belief that you will put a respectable product on the field so that people buy tickets AND trying to be good enough that you can claim you are in the race until mid-summer to keep people coming to TF AND doing it as cheaply as possible.
  2. THANK YOU for giving us a good read on a day when there's a fair amount of disagreement on the board. It adds a lot to this site to read your persepective and those of the other minor leaguers who post. Made my day.
  3. But if the Twins decide not to make July trades or big offseason trades, that means that they have ever intention of competing right away in 2013. This is incredibly depressing to me. Because to me it means that rather than taking some risks and being patient enough to obtain high-ceiling pitching prospects, the organization will be content to return to being "competitive in the Central" without any realistic expectations of going beyond that. I realize that watching the cr*p we've watched the last 2 seasons hasn't been fun. But it still hasn't been as low a point for me as that day in October 2010 when I finally accepted that there was no way in the world that this team would advance in the playoffs unless some major changes were made. NOTHING that is happening now leads me to believe that the organization has accepted that major changes need to be made. As long as they are good enough to keep the money coming into the coffers, this organization will be content with mediocrity -- never aiming for excellence. Bah, humbug.
  4. Per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter: 36s Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal #Dodgers no longer a fit for Morneau. They sent their only suitable young starter, Nate Eovaldi, to #Marlins in Hanley Ramirez trade.
  5. According to Cot's Baseball contracts (unless I missed something), the Twins have committed $64 million in 2013 to the following players: Mauer, Morneau, Willingham, Doumit, Carroll, Span, Blackburn and Perkins. PLUS another $3 million to Nishoka. So that takes you to $64 or $67 million depending on how you view Nishioka. But it ignores all the compensation to young players. My guess is that the $76 million is pretty close.
  6. Doing nothing isn't the answer. The answer is doing something without screwing up.
  7. That's what I meant -- there may be a different (retread) GM but my faith in what will happen with trades hasn't increased any.
  8. Oh, and I'm not holding my breath on Morneau being traded ... but it is tempting. Depends on your viewpoint on his staying healthy from here on out.
  9. I'll believe that when I see it. Given that TF revenues are apparently down about 11% this year, the team will be lucky to maintain this year's payroll. It's hard for me to see them "outbidding and overpaying" for a FA starter. (Although I will admit that they have to do something to put b*tts in the seats -- and beers, etc. in the hands -- next year).
  10. Pretty sure I'm hearing the echo of July '11 in that post. Why don't things ever change?
  11. The question that nags at me isn't about what the Twins got from him in the trade -- it's about what the Twins got from him while he was with the team. Did they get the best from him? Are they getting the best from the other players they have? I guess we'll see what Frankie does with the Sox.
  12. Well, since an article the other day pointed out that Target Field Revenues are down 11% this year (I think it was on Twinkie Town quoting another source), I'm guessing we see the payroll drop at least 6-8%.
  13. I changed my comment -- probably while you were writing this -- because I went back and re-read the original posters last sentence. But I still believe that the Twins need an injection of new life in their management -- front office and field staff.
  14. Just as a reminder -- and for a bit of amusement -- I'm bumping this thread. And yes, it appears that JC and others were right in thinking that Frankie should have been traded immediately after his 15K performance.
  15. I hate that the Twins just seem to keep doing the same thing over and over. New ideas, energy and enthusisasm in the front office and field staffs, PLEASE.
  16. Maybe Valencia is the key to Cassilla.
  17. But they -- and the responses -- make for an amusing first read in the morning.
  18. This Indians pitcher is excrutiatingly slow.
  19. Going to the Angels per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter.
  20. Chuckle. Its always nice when you can find something positive in bad Twins news. Handling of the DL boggles the mind.
  21. Thanks for the chuckle.
  22. No problem with trading him (or anyone else) for the right deal. He was a good signing for the Twins this off-season. Now they need to take advantage of the signing they made. Look to 2014 and beyond not 2013.
  23. I keep reading that phrase (mostly from SOVD) but here's the problem: 2011 (through the date given) 4/30: 9-17 5/31: 17-36 May record: 8-19 6/30: 34-45 June record: 17-9 7/25: 47-55 July record: 13-10 2012 4/30: 6-16 5/31: 18-32 May record: 12-16 6/30: 32-45 June record: 14-13 7/25: 40-58 July record: 8-13 I took the numbers from www.baseballreference.com so I hope they are right. Do you see any similarities? Maybe the 2012 team is showing steady "improvement" but maybe the similarities just reflect the timing of interleague play, etc. While I hope that the 2012 team won't have an historic collapse to match that of the 2011 team, there isn't a lot to indicate to me that it won't happen. Ironically, the 2012 team has been relatively fortunate on the injury front on position players -- there could still be some hits to come. People shouldn't forget that this team has played .500 ball since May but they shouldn't ignore last year's results either. I was in favor of a controlled burn in October 2010. Unfortunately the Twins gave us Nishioka for Hardy and 2 more years of Pavano. I'm not sure that they can right this thing without getting out the dynamite.
  24. Honestly, I don't think Gardenhire has enough years left for him to win a World Series in Minnesota. I'm not sure he has enough years left to win a playoff game in Minnesota. (Part of this is a comment on his age & health; part on his playoff record and part on the abysmal condition this team is in). My preference is for him to announce his resignation in the next few weeks -- effective at the end of the sesason. As I mentioned in Chief's thread, having a "lame duck" manager doesn't matter if you are really mediocre anyway; it would allow him to have a farewell tour of all the cities in the Central; and would accord him a reasonable amount of respect and dignity. It also allows the Twins to conduct a manager "search" without stepping on his toes; might allow them to get a new manager in place by the end of the season or shortly thereafter; and might help stabilize season ticket sales.
  25. Actually there is another possibility that hasn't been mentioned (that I noticed) -- that Gardenhire announces shortly after the trade deadline that he is leaving the manager's position at the end of the season. That gives him "lame duck" status but I don't think that really matters given the mediocrity of this team. It would allow him a "farewell tour" to everyplace in the Central. It would also allow the Twins to talk with potential managers without stepping on toes. Hopefully it would also allow the Twins to announce the new manager toward the end of the season -- possibly helping to stabilize season ticket sales. It would give Gardenhire the respect and recognition he deserves for his service as manager to the Twins but would give the organization the leg up on locating his replacement.
