    I don't really see Pohlad's and Ryan's comments as being diametrically opposed -- I think Ryan's position would always be that they are not going to give money away just to give it away and that there simply weren't any players out there worth the money last off-season. But I would think that if Terry Ryan spent 15%-20% below his authority for 2013 and then turns around and does the same thing (or something more drastic) next season without improved results, ANY owner would have to wonder whether the game has passed him by. I'm of the same age as Ryan and sometimes I look at prices in general and think, "who would pay that for that" but ultimately you have to pay the market rate (or, in the case of the Twins, more than market rate especially for short-term deals which are, after all, what Pohlad mentioned).

    Michael Cuddyer's BA currently stands at .334, highest of his career and currently highest in the NL. I'd like to congratulate him on making the transition to the NL and improving with age. Best BA of his professional life, best OBP, Slugging Percentage (despite "only" 20 HR, a little better than his 32 HR season in 2009) and OPS. But as I look at the Coors Field background, it looks like there are trees in the batter's eye. I always assumed he was basically elected to be the spokesman on removing the trees at TF but it is still hard for me to ignore that the TF trees were removed. I'm not suggesting a "curse of the trees". Maybe its more that removing the trees at the player's request signaled the beginnings of a decline in accountability.

    It's funny (or not). I keep going back to October 2010 and the belief I had that the Twins needed to start making some changes so that they could compete in the post-season. I was ready for them to do some re-tooling and had faith that they knew what they needed to do. It's the reason I wasn't upset about Hardy/Nishi -- I had blind faith that the front office and field staff knew what changes needed to be made to try to propel this team to the next level. And I remember discussions about contracts coming off the books and monies that might be available to improve the starting pitching. In some ways, it is hard for me to even comprehend how the team went from that point in October 2010 to where they are now. Injuries, bad luck, bad judgment, staleness, budget cuts and more have all played a part in the decline. It's just hard to understand how it could all get so bad -- and stay so bad -- so quickly. This decline was not like walking downhill. It was more like jumping off a cliff. I wish I had the faith that some posters have that the prospects will really turn this mess around but my trust level has been steadily decimated over the past few years. The Twins need to rebuild not only the team but the confidence of their fans (and former fans).

    Could be a really bad week for you. Congrats to the A's. As for the Twins, my new policy goes back to the old adage, if you can't say anything good .... (although despite his baserunning, Arcia did get me a boatload of points in "pick the stick" today).

    The only master plan I can see is maximizing profits. Finding that area where they win enough to keep the b*tts in the seats (and have 1 or 2 players whose jerseys sell well, etc). while keeping payroll and other costs as low as possible. That's the end game. Being good enough to keep the profits rolling in but not being willing to take enough risks to produce a team that can win more than the division. Some things never change.

    Great Read. Thanks. The quote about the locker room caught my eye, too ... not just as a reflection of the Twins locker room but an overall reflection on what its been like for Hicks. And that makes me happy for the fans in Rochester, too ... they've had to suffer through some pretty bad seasons right along with Twins fans.

    I just want to say that, while he may have refused to be interviewed at an earlier time, I do appreciate the interviews that Mr. Goins has been willing to give to TD writers (two by Parker if I remember correctly). And, I believe that some of what was said in those articles was fairly enlightening on the Twins stance on advanced metrics. I would summarize it as: they've made some progress in the last few years but still have a LONG way to go.

    First and foremost, I am incredibly happy for Frankie and I'm glad that he is pitching well for a team that may well be headed for the playoffs in a tough division. Second, I don't know how good/bad a pitching coach Anderson is. I suspect that he is better with certain pitchers than with others. I DO know that over the last 10 or so years, the Twins' philosophy throughout the organization has been "pitch to contact" and that that Anderson has been one of its primary proponents. I also know that it has worked to some extent. For a number of years, the Twins had a pitching staff of decent but not great pitchers who were able to provide enough starting pitching that the team was in the playoffs. But, other than Santana, it doesn't seem like the Twins were willing to allow power arms be power arms (and frankly intense personalities to be intense personalities). To some extent I believe that was organizational but I also believe that Anderson was a large part of that. Even if the organization's philosophy has changed somewhat; what, if anything, is there to say that Anderson can comfortably fit into a different philosophy? I've always had the impression that, while not wholly responsible for the organization's pitch to contact obsession, Gardenhire and Anderson led the charge on it.

    People post like there is something wrong with being a cynic. Over the last 3 years, the cynics have been right a lot more than the non-cynics. I hope that changes ..... but I'm not holding my breath. I do expect Ryan to sign some jetsam and flotsam that may add some depth and provide some options when the inevitable happens -- someone gets injured; someone simply doesn't perform, etc. I don't expect him to rely totally on what's in the system. I also don't expect him to spend a lot of bucks the possibilities.

    I'm just sitting cheering for Frankie. Up 5-0 after 5. The best thing about the Twins being bad is that I've watch a lot more baseball from other teams.

    The real story here is a scandal, and it’s not the one with A-Rod. The New Britain Twins affiliate admitted to faking a failed marriage-cam proposal to create a viral video. This is an outrage, and it could shake the foundations of baseball as we know it. These tidbits are the reason I love to read your recaps. They should have had Sano proposing to someone -- then we'd really see viral.

    My reaction is mixed ... I'd love to see him just to have something of interest to watch in September. I also get the maturity issue and the 40-man issue (although given some of the dreck we have on there, I don't know if it matters that much). But I have one other reaction: I'm really hoping for a "changing of the guard" in the managerial position after the season. I have some niggling feeling that it might be better to wait on some of the "kids" until after that happens so they all just have a fresh start.

    If only there were partial year big league contracts ..... like signing Correia for just April and May or Delmon Young for just August and September. Too bad they want to be paid for the whole season.
