  1. There is not one shred of evidence that he is holding money back to spend later. It is absolutely contrary to the Twins business plan. I'll believe it when I see it. (For those of you who think that is what is happening, please try to get Dave St. Peter to say/tweet that budget authority is being carried forward. I haven't heard it yet.)
  2. The thing I find interesting is "MUCH HIGHER" payroll. (my emphasis) Of course, merely keeping payroll at last year's levels would have been about 10% higher (or more). This really doesn't surprise me. I think Bill Smith pushed them higher than they wanted to go but I think most people are surprised by how much Terry Ryan has cut.
  3. When will he say "we're in rebuilding mode"?
  4. #1 The Twins need to admit they are in rebuilding mode not just "trade mode"
  5. Well, duh. I had done that and still didn't see it. Thank heavens for cntrl-F cuz I found it now. Thanks.
  6. Thank you. I searched all over baseball reference and couldn't find it. Fangraphs?
  7. Okay, so % of baserunners scoring when the following bat: 12% Mauer 16% Morneau 13% Doumit 13% Willingham (was 17% in 2012) 14% Plouffe 16% Dozier 9% Hicks 14% Arcia I didn't go any further than that. So yep, baserunners are a little less likely to score with Mauer at the plate than many of the other Twins batters. Mauer's career average is 18% (and was 19% last year) so this is a pretty significant drop off this year.
  8. As I've made pretty clear, I'm not the biggest Joe Mauer fan but he has scored more runs (47) than anybody else by a pretty significant margin (Morneau & Dozier with 37). Kind of hard to judge him on RBI alone but I'm having trouble finding his RISP stats. I'm relieved that his GIDP rate is down significantly but maybe that's because there hasn't been much on base in front of him.
  9. Gardenhire has no intention of stepping down | twinsbaseball.com: News Bollinger's full take on Gardenhire with the quotes Puck cites above.
  10. I have a tendency to zone out when Dick and Bert start yapping. Pretty sure I wouldn't have even caught this one except for the nice little graphic on the stat and the multiple videos of Hicks' recent catches.
  11. Well, I've read the fangraphs article and all the posts here and I'm still conflicted about what the team should do with Perkins. If I looked at it strictly by the numbers, I'd say trade him (if they offer is good enough). But I keep coming back to all those intangibles. This team is short on veteran leadership. And to me seems to be even more short on guys with a personality who might have a chance of lightening the mood during what will undoubtedly be another trying season in 2014. In addition, a lot of fans say now that they don't recognize anybody on the team. At least Perkins is a "hometown boy" that most people recognize. I'd rather keep Perk than extend Morneau.
  12. Thanks. I was pretty sure that was all it was.
  13. I'm no longer so sure about that. Mauer is going to be around so the young guys will have his professionalism to lead them but I really don't know if they are getting the leadership they need from Morneau. And I still have questions about the clubhouse and whether they need some other personality types in there to lighten things up when things are in a skid. I've always been a big Morneau fan but I just don't see him as the same player. I think maybe a change of scenery would be good for him AND the team.
  14. There was a little graphic on FSN during yesterday's game (I think it was yesterday's game) with Hicks' defense as a 1.000 and Span & Revere lower. Was this based on errors (or lack thereof)? I just caught part of it and I know Dick/Bert wouldn't talk about defensive WAR so I have to think it was a more traditional stat.
  15. Bill Smith was not fired for having a losing team. He was fired over payroll issues. If they'd had the same losing season with a $100 million payroll, I think he'd still be GM (or at least would have been GM in 2012). Smith pushed Pohlad to the $115 million figure. But the 2011 season was a disaster (the first one the Twins had in years) and there was a public outcry for Smith's termination. In addition, I think season ticket sales were languishing. So, appease the public by firing Smith and better yet, bring back Terry Ryan who loves low payrolls and cut payroll not only for 2012 but added cuts in 2013. It all had to do with money. I'm not convinced that they won't renew Gardenhire's contract. I think part of it depends on what develops in the media over the rest of the summer and where they think season ticket sales will head if he is retained (or where they will head if he isn't retained). Last summer there seemed to be fairly heavy public support for keeping Gardenhire on as manager. I think that support is dwindling. If the powers-that-be perceive that keeping him on will hurt season ticket sales, he'll be persuaded to take another position with the club (unless he resigns on his own and he seems pretty stubborn about that). If they think season ticket holders mostly want Gardenhire to stay on as manager, they'll give him another 1 year contract. Always, always, it comes down to money with this club.
  16. Brandon, it would probably be better to say retained or signed to a new contract if that's what you mean.
  17. In fairness, the Twins kind of blew through the BP a few hours ago. But yetp, this is a pattern with Pelfrey.
  18. If you don't pay close attention, you just think they are showing a replay of the 1st home run. Bah.
  19. Mogen David Concord Grape for communion wine. And despite the fact that its contains alcohol, I'm not sure it can be called booze. More like grapey-sugar.
  20. I'm a little dull right now but I'm not really getting how many games you think he should be catching currently. I said in my post from 5:58 p.m., 7-9-13 that he was on track to catch about 100 games this season. That's the "happy medium" to which I was referring in the post you quote. Admittedly, my hope in the 2011-2012 off-season was that Mauer would catch about 110-115 games so the 100 is below that. But I guess its not so far below that it is offensive to me. He's catching in about 5 out of every 8 games and has played in 84 out of 88. I'm pretty good with that. The issue, I guess, is whether they keep up this pace through the end of the year or shut him down on the catching side. We'll just have to wait and see how that plays out.
  21. I'm thinking Gardenhire is on some pretty strong Beta Blockers. If not, why the long-sleeved coat?
  22. I have always wanted a graceful parting of the ways. I hoped last summer that Gardenhire would manufacture a brief "health" excuse (need a few months off kind of thing) and leave the Twins gracefully. Obviously that didn't happen and the current limbo is pretty uncomfortable. I really believe that Gardenhire would be better off managing elsewhere (and I do believe he'd get another job relatively quickly). And I also believe that the Twins need a new voice. Let's face it, we all get stale. A change of scenery for Gardenhire would be good for everyone involved. But firing him mid-season would truly be an insult given what he was given to work with. I wish HE would be the bigger man and announce his resignation (either immediately or at the end of the season).
  23. Been thinking about the development of the younger players on this team and Gardenhire's recent admonition to them to have fun. Does anybody have a feel for where the fun might come from on this team? In the past the Twins have had guys like Redmond and Cuddyer to keep them loose. Does anybody have a feel for who might do that for this team? Perkins seems like the most likely source to me. Veteran, fairly secure in his position and seems to have a pretty outgoing personality (at least from his tweets, blog posts, etc.) Was told in advance that Vanimal would bring a little craziness but if he is doing so, its in AAA. I think Gardenhire had a point about loosening up and enjoying themselves (even in the midst of another horrific season) but it looks to me like they are going to have to "manufacture" a little fun. I know they have the usual card games, betting pools, etc. (Minnesota Twins: Josh Roenicke's teams just keep winning » Twins Now) But does anybody know who the characters are might loosen it up a bit?
  24. There's a difference between appreciating what losing could bring and actively rooting for them to lose. I find myself a bit indifferent to whether they win or lose but I do find myself really rooting for the young guys to grow and develop. Part of that is losing but I think some winning will be beneficial to their development. If that means the Twins don't get one of the top 2 or 3 prospects, that's fine with me. There's little doubt in my mind that they are going to be somewhere near the top (or bottom as it really is).
