  1. Some pretty high praise for Rosario in this Reusse article: http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/292542471.html?page=2&c=y He'll be playing CF in ST, and Mientkiewicz calls him the best hitter in the Twins system.
  2. Love this series, John. Thanks. I suspect that I felt about Harmon as a child the way later fans felt about Kirby or Herbie ...... just larger than life.
  3. I always wondered if he benefited from the residual effect of whatever they gave him legally to reduce the inflammation of his sacroiliac joint. Steroids are often used to treat inflammation and we've since found out that PEDs can be used in certain circumstances with permission of some czar or committee in the commissioner's office. So it just seems to me that may have been the case. But you are right about the short home runs so it could just be coincidence.
  4. Deepest sympathy on your loss. What a wonderful legacy of memories you and your grandfather shared. Thank you for sharing some of them with us,
  5. From Bob Nightengale: The #Tigers get encouraging news: Victor Martinez will be out only 4-6 weeks, and not months, after surgery today. 2:12pm - 10 Feb 15 Good news for the Tigers if it works out that way.
  6. Morrie Silver ‏@MorrieSilver8 · 6m6 minutes ago @LaVelleNeal @nater79a He would probably be there either way. Hicks is one of the hardest workers. One of the first to the ballpark everyday Interesting observation but who is this 27 yo and does he really have a connection to the Red Wings other than taking the name of the guy who worked to keep rhe Wings in Rochester and served as their president?
  7. LaVelle E. Neal III ‏@LaVelleNeal · 8m8 minutes ago Aaron Hicks arrives in Fort Myers on Wed. for final preparations before spring training. Torii Hunter is already there, waiting for him.
  8. The problem is that it is always harder to take something out than add it. But I agree. Plus we might eventually come to enjoy "God Bless America" again (in other contexts.) BTW. what do they do in Toronto?
  9. Sorry, I should have said its a 2014 photo.
  10. Sano and Vargas make Mauer look like a boy. No power? No wonder. Not that Joe doesn't look ripped.
  11. That was his cousin, Jonathan, pride of Battle Creek, Michigan, Bill was a little before my baseball memory: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tuttlbi01.shtml
  12. New Manager. New Pitching Coach. Can we at least give them a chance to evaluate before they negotiate with the FO over who will be the 5th starter??
  13. There were also stories that he was pressing in the 1st half trying to make the ASG at TF, I doubt if it was a big factor but just adds to the accumulation of what went wrong in the 1st half,
  14. I've never understood why they didn't do more to fix the bullpen the last few years (or why they did what they did). Now I just have a sense that their time has come -- and gone. They may still squeak out the division title but there is no sense of inevitability or dominance.
  15. Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi · 7m7 minutes ago From STATS LLC: 15,007 defensive shifts in 2014, up from 7,641 previous year. And the BABIP went UP, from .297 to .299. UP!
  16. I'm not a big Jon Heyman fan but he seems to think that the Sox did almost everything right. We'll know in September whether it paid off. Winners 1. White Sox. Rarely has a team so successfully and systematically answered so many of its major questions. They needed a righty starter. Check. They needed a closer. Check. They needed a No. 2 hitter, a cleanup hitter and lefty set-up man. Check, check and check. With Jeff Samardzija, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Adam LaRoche and Zach Duke they scored a grand slam plus. They should compete in the improving, difficult AL Central, thanks to a reasonable outlay of slightly less than what the Cubs spent on Jon Lester. Only tiny quibble: $15 million and three years seem like a lot for Duke. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/25003344/mlb-winter-winners-and-losers-all-is-well-in-chicago
  17. John, this is you writing at your best. I really enjoyed this. Looking forward to the rest of the series,
  18. Agreed. To some extent, only time and consistent play at the ML level will help. But I have to wonder if this might be where Hunter can be of help to all of the young outfielders. He'll be out in the same sun and wind and should be able to help them make in-game adjustments.
  19. But he was reportedly a mentor to Trout as well. I wasn't in favor of the Hunter signing but I do think the Twins brass and staff were in a good position to make a determination on that question.
  20. I found your post to be the most helpful of this whole discussion. It compares the Twins to their peers, It could be expanded to include the WARs of the players if someone wants to do that. Thanks for looking at things a little differently.
  21. Saw that Hicks is apparently working with Carew again. Maybe Rod can get through to him this time, https://twitter.com/RevMama/status/560572324345151489/photo/1
  22. A fast start is also important because 22 of the first 25 games are within the division. Winning ways in April could go a long way toward making the division seem weaker.
  23. What percentage goes to the agent? I know not all of the players use them initially but it is a factor.
  24. Olney is having a good time with this: Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN · 29m29 minutes ago Eliminate shifts? Wow. It might be a worse idea than telling pitchers they're only allowed to throw pitches that are straight. Are there going to be little circles in which fielders must stand, even when they know the batter doesn't hit the ball in that area? Re: 'No shifts.' Does that mean infielders can't play in or back? Outfielders can't play deep/in? Can't play the lines? No-doubles defense? Re: No shifts: Does that mean first baseman must always hold the runner? Must stay on the bag? On the bag? In front of the base? Back? Re: No shifts: Who will enforce it? If fielder must stay in his 'circle,' who will determine if he left a split second early? Reviewable? I can just see the groundskeepers competing on who makes the best little circles.
