  1. Actually they do call up coaches for September but in this case, I think they called up the Red Wings hitting coach with plans t add Gene Glynn later. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Pinto_Hicks_recalled_Twins_bolster_bullpen_with_September_callups090114
  2. I've no problem with them trying to sign an elite pitcher. I just think that Anderson and Gardenhire need to be gone a month from now.
  3. If you are a legit top-of-the-rotation starter, are you willing to put your career in the hands of Rick Anderson and Ron Gardenhire? Think about it. It seems to have worked for Hughes this year but he was making a turnaround. Wouldn't you rather go somewhere that has shown success with elite pitchers?
  4. Yep, and their record was still 11-18 so don't party too hearty.
  5. But what if you can't develop them? It has been so long since Johan Santana that I question whether the Twins system is conducive to developing an elite pitcher. It's time for a change.
  6. Way to depress me even more.
  7. This reminds me of the question I asked last week: "Do we even recognize good baseball any more?" Have we simply watched so many years of dismal ball that we are willing to lap up any signs of improvement? The Twins may have been 5th in runs scored in August but their record was still 11-18 (worse than their season average if I am doing my math correctly) .... and it wasn't all due to pitching. The Twins were able to pad that run total by beating up on AAAA pitchers but when it came to facing ML average or better pitchers, it often seemed like they were stymied. I understand the argument that there aren't many roster spots available to fill and I'm willing to see how these players develop but I'm not sure how much more palatable that is going to make 2015. I just don't see the pitching as being there. The defense will continue to be spotty. And the hitting will be unpredictable. It isn't a very pleasant picture when we come to year 5 of the debacle.
  8. Looking forward to the Konerko goodbye more than I did the Jeter send-off.
  9. I'm trying to send it your way, JC. It was torrential here this a.m. Unfortunately it's more likely to hit Chicago than Clinton.
  10. Bingo and that's what I meant when I said keep it at 6 years or less. The Twins are in the enviable position of having flexibility. And, since I, for one, take them at their word that they don't carry monies forward, they should spend some of it now.
  11. I have absolutely no problem with the Twins going after an elite pitcher or for that matter, adding a stellar outfielder (preferably Spanish speaking). I just think we have to be aware that while Target Field boosted the Twins' revenue, they still have the problem of the mediocre local TV revenues. And, as someone pointed out above, Target Field revenues are likely to keep slipping. Best way to increase revenue at TF? Win. Terry Ryan does have plenty to spend on short-to-mid-term contracts (less than 6 years). Will he have the will to do so? Questionable. But there is an argument for signing an elite pitcher now and that is that the revenues are available now. If we wait another 2 or 3 years, management may be all tied up in trying to buy out or extend some of the up and comers.
  12. How do you define low revenue? I believe that the Twins did get revenue sharing this year. While that doesn't make them "low revenue", it is a concern. Major problem is the TV deal ... it just doesn't seem commensurate with what other teams are getting. I don't think the Twins are low revenue ..... but I also don't think it is as "rosy" as many of us thought 4 years ago.
  13. And, except for Chief, we still aren't talking about the elephant in the room .... Does the management staff stay intact? Especially on field? To me, a new field manager and (some of his) lieutenants are a big need. And as of a month ago, there seemed to be a fair amount of agreement on that in certain parts of Twins Territory. Have we just resigned ourselves to at least one more year of Ronnie & crew?
  14. Famous last words. I know we expect to see Buxton, Sano and Meyer ..... but I'm not holding my breath. There's hope. But there is also the possibility of a lot of struggle.
  15. In the somewhat bizarre world of the Twins of recent years, I find this article both encouraging and depressing. Encouraging because we are seeing some of the prospects mature and it will be interesting to see how they play together. Depressing because this really isn't a good team and basically seeing a clone next year makes me want to kick something. It may turn out that the young players mature and next year is easier to watch. Or it may turn out that there is a lot of regression and next year is as depressing as the last few years. Only time will tell. (But I still think I'd like to see some changes -- one that I mentioned elsewhere is a Spanish-speaking veteran to help mentor the younger players.)
  16. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 9m Response minutes ago from @MLBazFallLeague spokesman Paul Jensen on Nick Burdi: "Speculation. The Twins still owe us one pitcher." Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 7m Person with direct knowledge tells me #mntwins "changed their mind" on Nick Burdi as final AFL pick. Hence the online confusion. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 4m And before everyone jumps to the wrong conclusion, I'm told Nick Burdi is completely healthy. 5 scoreless outings since jump to Ft. Myers
  17. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino · 50s Nick Burdi is NOT official as the seventh and final #MNTwins AFLer. Still being debated internally, I'm told.
  18. Does the failure to announce have anything to do with his only being at A+? Aren't there some qualifications on numbers below AA and AAA? Seems weird that he'd be on the roster, though and yet Twins wouldn't announce.

    Gush (v 12.0)

Senior year will be a rush (and gush) for her. And hurry by for you ... and then there will be next year. Life goes on.
  20. 1. Unless you do a detailed comparison with other systems, it is hard to say if the Twins are "snake-bitten". 2. Need a detailed analysis of training methods. 3. As much as I was appalled by the way Houston handled the draft, I did take one thing away from it. The Astros (and other teams) are using advanced analysis to predict possible future medical issues -- how much are the Twins doing on this front? I'm tired of the whining about injuries. Poor me, poor me. I want to know what the Twins are DOING about it because I don't buy purely "bad luck".
  21. Congrats to Vasquez. And it is great to see that Berrrios' sore shoulder was just that - sore. It's a long season. Nice recovery by J.O.
  22. You have to separate that into 2 times periods, though. Pre-2011 and 2011 and beyond. Even after Mauer signed his big contract, I think (from a distance), Mauer was still beloved by most Minnesota fans regardless of the money. But 2011 had a devastating effect. The contract, his virtual absence, the way the publicity was handled and his failure to put out good information. Plus, for me, the way it seemed like the Twins were "kow-towing" to him when he was permitted to do his rehab in Florida with big brother Jake. The Twins were in the middle of negotiating the renewal of the Player Development deal with Rochester and it was fairly shaky -- I thought it was a perfect time for Mauer to show leadership by doing a rehab stint in Rochester and building bridges. It just seemed like he needed "kid gloves" to be used when handling him. And I do think that some people reacted to that. I don't hate Joe Mauer. In fact, his struggles over the last few years have probably increased my affection for him. But part of it is "the bigger they are, the harder they fall". When you have someone who was made a Deity by a large part of the fan base, it isn't surprising that there would be a lot of disfavor when something goes wrong. Perfection is a b*tch. Nobody could live up to the build-up that many Minnesotans (including the media) had given Mauer.
  23. Pretty much. He leaves me cold from an emotional connection standpoint. Objectively, I can admire his accomplishments and I can admire the 3 batting titles and I can admire his sweet swing but overall there just isn't much emotional connection for me.
  24. But the "soft" image was also created by not playing in day games after night games and failing to play in getaway games. I remember tons of complaints about how kids going to a Sunday afternoon game rarely got to see Mauer play. I was never a big Mauer fan (I truly never got the Minnesota idolization of him) but I've come to a basic acceptance. The Twins were in the unfortunate position of having to extend him or risking a shadow cast on the opening of TF, From a business and publicity standpoint, I never thought they had another choice. From a baseball standpoint, I didn't want it to happen. Mauer just leaves me feeling "blah" but the Twins do need him in the line-up.
  25. TOMMY MILONE, SERVICE TIME AND FREE AGENT STATUS Found this post by Berardino to be interesting: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/08/13/twinsights-tommy-milone-concerned-possible-service-time-manipulation/ Looks like Milone could get a nice raise for next year. But his potential free agency was apparently delayed by his time in Rochester.
