  1. I have a quibble with this one: None of that has ever been reported FWIW, while "Texas" is technically a big market, I don't think anyone would confuse Arlington with Chicago, LA, NYC etc (Not talking in terms of population but just 'big market') as it applies to teams, media, fanbases etc I'm not so sure the Twins would have had to put a 'much better' deal on the table then the Cubs anyways, by all accounts he and Levine are pretty close, I think it literally just came down to the fact the Twins didn't want to match or even make a 'true' competitive offer for his services (i.e. no 6th year even at a very reasonable AAV)
  2. I don't think it was botched by the FO, I think the FO was given a HARD number by the Pohlads in regards to the maximum amount of money they could pay a free agent. The ironic part of that of course is the Pohlads (by their own admission) don't follow baseball and don't really know baseball, so them being in charge of total payroll and 'signing off on' large contracts is just....well....dumb. Then again, I don't understand why you would own a sports team if you had zero interest in them winning titles/winning games etc, I mean turning $38 million into over a billion in less than 40 years is cool and all, but man, it would be nice if they actually followed the game and tried to win. People complain about Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban, Steinbrenner, etc etc but give me a passionate (yet douchey sometimes) owner then one that just cares only about dollars and cents.
  3. Sean Connery as Frank Mason put it Best: Losers always whine about their best, winners go..... Epstein is a winner and once again won the offseason, while the Twins are basically the scrappy little underdog they seem to always love to be and never want to progress on from. The Wild Card game should be a fun one again
  4. I think Falvine know what they are doing, I think they really wanted to land Darvish but the Pohlads and co gave them a hard “max” to offer. They tried their best but came up 20-30 mil short. The 6th year isn’t even that big a deal when the AAV was only $21 million! That’s basically just a super cheap almost free year added on if it was a 5 year $25 AAV type deal In general it’s not wise to bet against Epstein anyways....so apparently not everyone thinks that a 6th year to Darvish is so foolish and dumb. Unless you don’t think Epstein and his FO have earned any benefit of the doubt?
  5. I like the idea for sure, I just think Houston(win now 100%) will hold onto him unless they are blown away, and I’m not sure McHugh is a guy you want to ‘overpay for’ with prospects at this time. Pitching is tough to get via trades as we all know, so I would still just prefer the FA market, where at least if you over pay you aren’t giving up young/cheap/impact prospects as well.
  6. Interested where this so called meltdown exists in re: Darvish? So criticizing a team for failing to bring in Darvish on a reasonable deal is having a meltdown? And thus asking if the Twins will ever sign a top FA? I mean I don’t have super high requests, just want us to win a playoff series more than once every 25 years. When those extremely modest expectations aren’t met I feel like the criticism is very much warranted. Hell at this point I will take a single playoff game WIN.
  7. I don’t see the Astros putting him on the block aggressively , they are in win now mode and it’s pretty rare for a team to only need 5 SP during a season. Basically you would need to overpay for him, I’d rather just sign a Lynn or someone like that.
  8. I mean yeah that’s why I called it an ‘ok’ signing. Which is fine as long as he isn’t the biggest signing. I will admit the Reed signing appears to be great. Rodney/Pineda TBD but at least we are trying to fix the pen. Rotation is a disaster though.
  9. Panic is the wrong word. Disappointing and hoodwinked are the words. The Pohlads told us that the new stadium would bring us into the 'big world' of contending, major free agency signings etc. But nope, the city gets put on the hook for a ton of money they will never see again> We were told that Falvine and co would change things, it's a whole new Twins front office and a brand new day! Over 365 days in and I don't see any real 'move' that makes them a whole lot different then the last regime. Reed and Castro are ok signings, other than that it's been a pretty big bag of 'meh'
  10. LA, Houston, NYY and Texas have all made or won World Series in the last 10 years and have made plenty of other BIG splashes in the meantime in FA and trades. Also I know a lot of rangers fans who are pissed as well fwiw. The Brewers are a bad example (or good example actually) since they haven’t won jack either in forever. So yeah, I would say they have failed pretty significantly as well! (But at least they have made some aggressive moves over the years) If the Twins did anything over the last 25 years to truly (go for it) it would be easier to let it slide. Also the Yankees brought in Stanton and the Astros brought in Cole already this offseason...
  11. It was reported the Twins offered 5 years and a little over $100 million fwiw But still didn’t match the cubs or really come that close. Just a token effort to say “hey we tried! Ps enjoy the new 3 bars at target field and increased ticket prices to boot!”
  12. So the fact that he took the vastly better deal (with an extra year) makes you KNOW that he didn’t wanna play here?
  13. I look forward to opening day when we raise our “3rd place in the Yu Darvish sweepstakes” banner along with our AL Wild Card one and done banner.
  14. New York and Cali are much worse than even Minnesota
  15. Yeah they do that to prevent people from taking advantage of the system, we see it here in NYC, you can't get out of the city/state tax by just 'moving' to Jersey, as it all basically evens out more or less.
  16. That's correct (states were smart about that), playing in a home state (50% of games) where there is 0% income tax comes into play, mostly you see it in the NBA or other leagues though with salary caps. The Yankees+Dodgers will always overpay and help 'make up' for those high state taxes. Players often 'claim' residency in tax friendly states (smartly I might add!) so they don't get as destroyed on all of their other sources of income: commercial, endorsements, 1099, investments etc etc Also why they all retire to those states as well (pension baby!)
  17. If you wait for the 'perfect time' to go all in, it likely will never come. At least go for it and give your fans some hope, because as the team is constructed today we have zero shot in the playoffs.
  18. No kidding. The Twins hand out extra years to #4/#5 type pitchers like candy seemingly, yet when it comes to an ace they get stingy? Also with a 6th year you can pay him 'less' IMO those first 5 years as well. Let's say YU is looking for $25 mil a year for 5 years, but would settle for $22 mil a year for 6 years. 6/132 seems like a fair deal for all sides.
  19. Implicit without a doubt. Enjoy baseball while you can, there will be some nasty labor disputes in a couple years.
  20. Trading Sano right now would be very very dumb. I can’t be convinced otherwise. Also for all the pitchforks that came out re: the news last week, it should be noted that nobody else has come forward, and there haven’t been any real other developments on this story whatsoever.
  21. Haven’t read through most of this thread, so sorry. But from my experience in not only online media, but sports online media I feel I can share a few thoughts: 1. People shouldn’t EXPECT to get paid for posting written blogs in 2017. It’s awesome enough that twins daily that they do pay out to ‘contributors’ that’s pretty rare even amp at large national sports blog providers like SB, Fansided etc hell I have even written 4 ‘articles for deadspin’ and never saw a cent (to be clear I never expected to nor cared, even though combined they have over 100,000 reads) 2. If you want to make money in 2017 it’s all video video and more video. TD has no video to speak of, to be clear doing sports video without the rights is extremely tough, and I do get the sense that Brock, bonnes, Nick, and Seth etc aren’t in this for the money first and foremost, but if you other bloggers want to make a quick buck create video and find an audience, the CPMs are much much much better. 3. If people want ‘reads’ on blogs they need to be prepared to be a bit more provocative in nature with the opinions and takes. Barstool sports is garbage, but gets a lot of views for a reason, I’m not saying go full Barstool, but maybe feature the occasional “hot sports take!!!1!” Article from time to time. People love to read it.
  22. Why would the pirates go for that deal at all? Kepler looks to be a solid young corner OF, but isn’t exactly an all star or even a guy teams can pencil in every day due to struggles against LHP ....to be clear, I think Kepler eventually reaches his peak and becomes a borderline all star player during his prime, but any other team is gonna view him on his results, floor etc as well. Jay, Stewart, Javier aren’t ‘bad’ prospects, but none of them are very great either. Let’s put it this way, if the Twins were to trade a Cole and McCutchen and we got that package back, we would be pretty damn pissed I imagine.
  23. Napoli would be such a terrible signing. I’m not a huge fan of Grossman, but at least he can get on base and pretend to play defense if all things go pear shaped, Napoli is not a guy you need to bring in when you have Mauer, Sano etc who will need to be taking a decent number of at bats at the DH spot this year. If Sano gets hurt, then you look at a mediocre DH like Napoli, not before though.
  24. Same team Terry Ryan left them with, winning the wild card during a weak year was nice and it as no doubt a fun season bc they exceeded expectations, but it was clear they were NOT title contenders. Being the 10th or so best team in a 30 team league is a start.. As of today I would put their odds at the division at 10% and wild card at 25-30% Too many other teams have improved this off season thus far. Gotta fix the pitching.
