  1. Under Toronto team control another year.
  2. I know he likes the taste of bourbon, but why are people assuming Derek Shelton will arrive at his own press conference drunk?
  3. We have recent evidence about that in Chicago and Denver. 😄
  4. Billy Martin, firebrand that he was, got ejected from ballgames at a rate of once every 47 games across 2267 games as manager. Derek Shelton in his managerial career has been tossed once every 44 games and milquetoast Rocco Baldelli was sent to the locker room every 38 games. Both faster rates than Martin. Make of that what you will. Statistics for "Pitchers Punched" are not available to me.
  5. I glanced through the list of 1st round and 2nd round picks by the Pirates. Not a very illustrious bunch, apart from the unicorn Skenes. The catcher also drafted 1-1, Henry Davis, has yet to pan out - as with another 1-1 pick of our local acquaintance, a succession of injuries may have sapped his talent. A guy you'd maybe never heard of (I hadn't), Carmen Mlodzinski, might be ready to provide significant value going forward at age 27. That's about it in the past decade-plus (and granting as always that maybe very recent picks will have altered the trend) - Ke'Bryan Hayes almost came through but wound up fizzling. I suppose you could reach back to Gerrit Cole as a draft success, but he was traded in 2018 and none of the talent they received in return was much of a factor one way or the other by the time Shelton appeared on the scene. Poor choices on draft day, or poor development in the minors, or poor coaching at the major league level with the manager to blame? "Yes," I suppose. 😄
  6. It would be nice to think that Derek Shelton provided the best critique of what he saw from the outside, and was awarded the job on that basis.
  7. Less disturbingly, I found this old publicity photo of Derek Shelton from a prior employer, which I'll show next to a more recent shot of the handsome fellow. Hair's a little grayer now.
  8. Heh. I'll take it as the compliment you surely intended. 😄 There are plenty of others here who have worked in an office/team environment too. Shelton's got the job but he still needs to sell himself to a new audience. Gotta ask questions you'll get an answer to, and not use the opportunity to simply vent.
  9. Sal was born in NY, Drew was born in Indiana when Sal was playing in the minors there, Blake was born in Louisiana 9 years after Drew. I couldn't find any online witnesses to Sal's whereabouts in 1992 so it's faintly possible, but Sal's Wikipedia page makes reference to only one offspring, Drew. Looks like another AI Hallucination.
  10. Royce Lewis the Manager might answer such a question because he has no filter. Derek Shelton will not. 🙃
  11. There are questions I'd try to ask him in a relaxed private setting, and then there's the ones that aren't a waste of time in a public forum. Anything that smacks of throwing certain players under the bus, even by omission in talking about others, will be answered in ways that are not useful. "Which players do you most look forward to working with?" would be an example. Ditto for disparagement of his predecessor, and certainly of the present FO top to bottom (or his prior employer for that matter). And he's not going to divulge whatever secret sauce he may feel he has for running a cohesive clubhouse. Still, gotta try to glean something useful from the new guy. How about: Compared to other managers, what do you delegate, and where are you most hands-on? What's the biggest change fans will notice about the team, apart from W/L you hope for? What are your thoughts on batter platooning, and conversely L/R matchups for your pitchers? What's the most important thing you learned as a manager the first time around? I dunno, maybe I'll think of some others.
  12. The payroll floggings will continue until fanbase morale improves.
  13. Sorry, Rocco. You get to be a young and rising managerial candidate only once. After that you're a retread - somebody else's reject.
  14. And mere days ago we thought this to be mere satire: Word of advice: don't do a Google Image Search on "Derek Shelton Hot" with SafeSearch off.
  15. Came here to say this in response to the headline, but I'll amplify that I could sort of see trading either of Duran or Jax, but disposing of both relievers who were under control for an additional two years told us immediately all that we needed to know. The trade of Varland on top of that indicated that possibly the next window of contention might not be until after 2030 which is Louis's first shot at free agency. Not that Louis Varland by himself is key to anything, but it signals how the FO values contributions during that time frame - trade for guys who may be here in 2031 when the champagne finally flows. (Taj Bradley and James Outmaker would seem to be exceptions to this 2031 timeframe, but presumably there is a plan.) Derek Shelton is no kind of signal. Absent a dead-cat bounce like 2017 was, the Twins are in for a long stretch of thoughts and prayers.
  16. If this is true, wouldn't Shelton himself have a sense of it happening? Why in the world would he sign on for that?
  17. Two HRs, two baserunning challenges - I am so disappointed the last one wasn't overturned too.
  18. I attended a game at Dodger Stadium when they were going through that. You're not wrong about the vibe among the concession stands. Dunno why they cut corners that way, but apparently they do.
  19. He sure doesn't score runs. Not like some sort of all-time great. Has he ever scored 90? Nor does he drive them in.
  20. If we are talking about protecting John Klein then shouldn't we also be talking about protecting Mike Paredes who was better and pitched more innings at Wichita? No? Then no.
  21. "What’s that? Ah – The World Series?! Don’t talk about – The World Series?! You kiddin’ me?! The World Series?! I just hope we can win 90 games! Another 90 games!"
