1. Since this is the first year under the new system, I'll wait to see how their spending stacks up compared to other teams, and not just in absolute terms. But I'm pretty sure they need to be in the upper echelon, as a percent of their cap, given their needs. Here's what worries me. They drafted a slew of pitchers, and rightly so. Past the first two or three rounds at best, any individual draftee is a long shot to ever make an impact in the major leagues. I imagine the guys from round 5-15 (say) are labeled by the front office as grade-B prospects, and all from 16-40 are labeled fringe. Can these pitchers ever shake their label based on actual performance? Judging by the Twins' treatment of (as the most recent examples) Slama and DeVries, with public comments that their stuff won't let them translate AAA success to the majors, I am doubtful. In that case, investing a lot of money to sign any but the top draft picks is ultimately a waste, of money, attention, and time.
2. You haven't lived until you've been forced to watch multiple episodes of Teen Girl Squad with your 14 year old daughter. "I HAVE A CRUSH ON EVERY BOY!!!!!!!!"
3. Wonder if he's any relation to Marty Liquori, the 60s-70s runner from when a 4 minute mile was a big deal.
4. He should go by Storm.
5. He's no Storm Throne.
6. Twins are going more for position players today, overall.
7. Yankees just drafted Vincent Jackson. Hope for their sake they don't think they're getting Bo.
8. God doesn't hand out the talent equally. There's not much correlation to throwing hard and with accuracy to hitting a major league breaking pitch; if there were, we wouldn't have a DH.
9. How do you feel about straw men instead?
10. Clete. Clete. Clete.
11. And the high schoolers, I suspect, are the ones who intend to get a four-year degree before devoting to baseball. You can draft a thousand of them too, and still probably not make a difference; but at least, with these, we can hope for some kind of persuasion.
12. Yeah, but they're already taking pitching for pitching's sake by now; Muren at #370 had a 5-8 W-L record in 14 starts this year, a 5.30 ERA, and 47 Ks in 91.2 innings. He'll help fill out a rookie league rotation but unless a scout saw something to build upon it's difficult to forecast any progress. And we've still got 28 rounds to go in this draft. I think I'm officially bored now.
13. Alex Muren, RHP, Cal State Northridge, 12th round. Pitching, pitching, pitching.
14. The Twins already have sufficient Batting Practice talent in the majors, Blackburn and Pavano and so forth, thankyouverymuch.
15. I just set up the joke. Feel free to provide your own punchline.
16. Well, Mauer was born into a baseball family and competed as a youth at a higher level of competition than Buxton, whose father seems to have topped out in slow-pitch leagues. If Buxton has unusual polish I don't know where he would have gotten it. However, it is possible he has high aptitude and coachability to go with his talent, so 2015 is hardly impossible. Can he learn to hit the quality breaking ball? That's always the question with a high schooler.
17. While looking for something else, I ran across on Yahoo's team roster page that Drew Butera is listed among the pitchers. So that I won't think I was just imagining things after they correct it, here is a compressed screen shot:
18. These are the options, are they? Real optimism.
19. Have to take your word on that.
20. If he's still there at 32, I concur.
21. Revere's arm is so epically weak that maybe it actually makes sense; could runners routinely be going first-to-third on a single to left when Ben is there? If so, right is not really any worse, and gives Gardy the stability he likes.

23. My take: Gardy likes to assign roles to his players. Willingham is the regular LF, Span is the regular in CF. At this point Revere is the third starter, so he gets RF. Plouffe is the utility guy and gets either RF or LF depending on who is sitting. At least, this week.
24. There's a little bit of Walter Mitty in all of us.
