  1. And in regard to the other comments following this, he did not quite say the same thing as "a core of excellent young position players".
  2. Sounds like you have outgrown TD and should move up to a higher league, my brother.
  3. Not a good discussion tactic, my brother. Maybe you can find someone who said this, but not many here. When you take on large future risk, it needs to be for a significant reward in the present. Turning a 75-win team into an 80-win team, or even 80 into 85, doesn't IMO justify that much risk in later seasons. In an offseason or two, when it looks like the team is a solid starter away from trying for a World Series crown, then it makes more sense - and maybe they get creative in a way like Rocket Pig suggested above.
  4. When a guy's on a steep learning curve, it's acceptable to throw out the first part of the record if that helps determine whether he should stay or not. That means battling SSS, so the eyeball test has to factor in, as others have said. In the case of Hicks, the record just jumps out at me that the first three weeks should be thrown out for current evaluation; the first two weeks he was getting himself out, and the third week he was collecting walks at an unsustainable rate because no one was throwing him strikes after the first pitch. I wouldn't set a seasonal benchmark, .500 or whatever, by a certain date. Instead, if he looks like he's at least above replacement, keep him. We can live with below average stats from a CFer with growth potential, in a rebuilding year. By contrast, this approach works the opposite way with Florimon, unless the last two games in Boston are the start of a better trend.
  5. In any case, Mauer would be good in Fenway or, as the saying goes, Yellowstone.
  6. Kidding aside, I am not sure Gardy is sold on Mastro's defense in CF, either. Like his hitting, he's good enough in the field for short term usage, but he's got some flaws, with not always the best routes to the ball, and is just not a plus on defense. He is... a fourth outfielder, and a valuable one. Between him and Wilkin, who has good hitting stats in very small usage, I'm not sure who to send down if they want to keep both Arcia and Hicks up. They really need a legitimate CF backup and Mastro (for all his limitations) is the only one who qualifies. I could see pulling the trigger on a Hammer trade to solve this, if Ryan has a good one lined up for the asking. Clete can be the emergency callup if something bad happens after that.
  7. Hicks. Duh.
  8. I liked it too. My comment about meds was serious in exactly whatever degree Bark's was serious about getting off them.
  9. Yah, I forgot about that already. Twins 3, Fien 1.
  10. And if Jamie Moyer had a fastball he'd still be pitching.
  11. He has one or two other, bad, ones in case he wants to go back to starting.
  12. I never understood why the "Jr." gets attached to a last name, when the last-name-only is used. If Pedro has a brother Fred, he's just Florimon. So should Pedro. He's Pedro Jr., if such distinction is really needed. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Perk-fest, already in progress.
  13. I'd rather watch Jenny Dell do that, but to each his own.
  14. Parms in as a defensive replacement. Who among us predicted this, during the off-season?
  15. Other than the shutouts, I never quite got Koufax, either.
  16. You saw the thread discussing his interview with (I think it was) Fangraphs? A thinking man's pitcher. Downright college-talk, even.
  17. What I didn't care for was all the minor characters wanting to continue the series. Called it After-MASH, I forget if it actually aired or if it was just talk.
  18. I goofed, it was the 6-1 win.
  19. We had fun with Breslow last night, as I recall. / edit: I recalled wrong. Two nights ago.
  20. So you gave up after the first episode? Quitter.
  21. Like when you mentioned the outrageous price of rutabagas in Grand Forks last week.
  22. No spoilers, please. I'm on the west coast feed.
  23. You're gonna end up in Gardy's doghouse with that college-fella talk.
