  1. Fair enough - my judgement of Cleveland is probably a bit clouded by the games against the Twins. Looking at BRef, it seems like they have cooled off a bit offensively (with the exception of a big game vs. Toronto). I don't think their pitching is terrible - they don't have any Pelfrey/Correia level holes in their rotation, though I think the Twins have a better staff overall.
  2. With the exception of the Dodgers, the Twins won a series against all of those teams - it is a reason to be optimistic, for sure. The blurb left out Oakland as well - they took the Twins to task early. Cleveland seems to be better this year, too - I'll be interested to see how the Central division shakes out as the season goes along. If the Twins can stick with the pack for another month or two, that would be exciting.
  3. I'm personally not interested in making money collecting them - one thing I'd like to do is complete a vintage topps set (still trying to decide which year - any suggestions? Based on design and personal taste I'm looking at 1959, 1960, 1963, and 1965). Definitely would not make any money building a vintage set. If I manage to stick with it, I bet it will take years to complete and set me back a significant amount of $$$ I have a small interest in getting sets from my birth year, and sets that I was collecting as a kid but never got close to finishing. Besides that, I don't have any ambition to become an ebay super seller, or to buy up lots or hobby boxes and scour them for big $$ rare finds. I think one of my favorite cards is a 1990 Donruss John Smoltz error card. The picture on the front of the card is actually a portrait of Tom Glavine. It's barely worth the cardboard it's printed on, but it's still funny to me . . .
  4. Cool stuff as always. I imagine that he was thinking "How do ya like 'MELEE NOW?" after that homer yesterday. Is there post in the future for either Hicks or Kubel? They seem to have had the opposite trend this year compared to Parmelee and, say Suzuki...
  5. Time for another ninth inning tater from Plouffe . . .
  6. It is - in Burton's first 9 outings he gave up 9 runs. It was especially volatile. He's only allowed 1 run since.... so, that's a pretty solid turnaround.
  7. nice job not giving in to Bogaerts. 7 foul balls in a row, yeesh.
  8. hey boo-boo, if you see a fork in the road; take it.
  9. also good for our recent goats: http://youtu.be/1ytCEuuW2_A
  10. I will say that even though I always want the Twins to win, performances' like Ortiz has had in this series are among the reasons I love baseball in first place.
  11. *if the batter has hit 4 home runs in the last 2 games : might be a good candidate for an IBB. I'd still say pitch to him with the bases empty in the first 6 innings or so, even if the game is close. If it can be helped, just don't give him anything good. Looking at some of the pitches Ortiz has crushed this series, though, maybe it doesn't matter where you throw it?
  12. Will they pitch to Ortiz today, or are they going to more emphatically "not let him beat them" ? Yesterday was more about our pitching, but Ortiz is on fire right now. I am interested to see if Hughes challenges Ortiz, or if they try to pitch around Ortiz.
  13. If he's not ready in their opinion, why are they keeping him on the ML roster instead of have him play in AAA ? Are they trying to soften the blow for the move they have already decided to make? Making it public does seem like a way to send an additional underlined message, but that's assuming Hicks pays attention to the local media.
  14. The Twins are comfortable with the # of healthy outfielders on their 25 man roster - why would you want to have Arcia up when you can start your choice of Danny Santana or Eduardo Nuñez? j/k - Arcia should benefit from some time in the minors with a nagging injury and a slow start. My guess is that Willingham's rehab stint will be short and he'll be called up much faster than Arcia will be because the Twins love their old guys.
  15. There's a dollar store about a block and a half from my house, and I 100% blame it for my renewed addiction for worthless pieces of cardboard. I noticed that they had a hanging display of trading cards (sports and cartoon shows and other random things) and they were selling "vintage" unopened wax packs from the 80s and 90s 2/$1. There were 2 packs of 1989 Donruss cards, which in my youth were briefly a hot ticket. As an x-mas gift that year I was given a case of 36 wax packs, and I tore through them hoping for a Ken Griffey, Jr. Rookie card (and all the Twins, of course). No Griffey, but lots and lots of Frank Tanana and Mark McLemore. Major bummer. So when I saw those two packs sitting on that shelf I thought - hey, why not? $1 is nothing. Of course the very first pack I opened had Ken Griffey, Jr. in it. That was bad news for me, because now I am hooked again on collecting. I never had a 'hit' like that opening a pack as a kid, but that litte rush of endorphins has rekindled that nerdy interest.
  16. Is there a limit to how long Arcia can keep playing in AAA under the heading of "rehab"?
  17. Maybe it falls into a "get after it" or "battle one's tail off" category in Gardy's mind. As in, he'd rarely ever walk a guy intentionally, because he'd rather face the challenge head on (whether it makes strategic sense or not)...?
  18. Yes, definitely a nostalgia thing for me as well. That 1984 Fleer Update Puckett is probably one of the few cards that has retained value past the crash. It seems to have more to do with an overwhelming supply of cards rather than any one player's reputation. Roger Clemens' 84 Fleer Update rookie card, for instance, still commands hundreds of dollars.
  19. I think Willingham might be back as early as the end of May or early June: "Twins GM Rob Antony said outfielder Josh Willingham, out since April 7 with a broken wrist, took early batting practice and could begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend." from the ESPN re-cap of yesterday's win.
