  1. I couldn't find two same-team Catching All-Stars, but I did find this fun series of articles about the "Great Platoons" http://www.hardballtimes.com/?s=great+platoons
  2. .304 for 2014 (to date) .311 for 2013 .296 for 2012 .310 for 2011 not sure why you started with 4 years ago, but this more recent data supports your argument as well. Nolasco's BABip is .350 , well above the rest of the team. He also leads the team in HRs Allowed and Walks, which aren't counted in BABip, but are likewise sources for concern. He pitched well against the Yankees. I think that league average is about what he brings to the table.
  3. My question is this, as I missed seeing this weekend's games - Is he at least allowed to rock a cool eyepatch on the bench?
  4. the defense was not so hot last year, either, though...
  5. nailed it - as stringer bell noted in a new thread - the hitting fell off and the pitching improved. I think the Twins hung in there in May, though there were some disappointing stretches towards the end of the month.
  6. Hughes is already up to 1.7 WAR for the season - he might finish a solid "2nd Starter" which is really saying something compared to the last few years...
  7. That's a good point - BABIP can tell us a bit about the defense behind a pitcher - The other rate stats for May seem to be creeping back towards his career averages, but if the BABIP stays up, it might be due to some bad outfield defense. It's not an error in the boxscore if the fielder was no where near the ball - or are slow getting the ball back in to the infield. Bad luck, or bad Defense, either way Nolasco has been getting the short end of the stick.
  8. The other thing to consider is that the HOF has a very small # of third basemen. The voters have been very picky with the position, and guys that have been voted in recently have had the big counting stats (3000 hits like Boggs, Molitor, Brett). Chipper Jones should be a lock, but I would not be shocked if even he was not a 1st ballot guy. Beltre has been great for a long time (I really REALLY wanted the Twins to sign him the last time he was Free Agent) and if he can keep it up until he turns 40, I think he'll be sitting closer to the top 5 WAR at his position. That should make it an easier vote for most.
  9. The most recent Twins game I was able to attend in person was against the Orioles, who were using really dramatic shifts on Mauer and Kubel. In that game, both guys had hits by basically taking what was given to them. Kubel had a routine soft liner to a completely abandoned Third Base, and Mauer was able to line two singles through the ss-3b hole that was a bit bigger than standard (SS was shifted to play the middle). Mauer also homered in that game (to deep left) and hit another sharp line drive to left, but that one was into the teeth of a shifted outfield alignment. His back flared up the next day... I think it's reasonable to be critical of Mauer's season to date - he's not expected to hit .275 and only have 9 xbh this far into the year. I assume that he and the Twins are aware of the fact that he's expected to have better results. If his LD% stays where it is, I am confident that the average and slugging will improve.
  10. I found this interesting (from July 2013): http://blogs.thescore.com/mlb/2013/07/30/my-approach-joe-mauer/ Do you do a lot of video work between games? Joe Mauer - Yeah. I use video daily, usually to go over the opposition starting pitcher just to see some previous at bats I’ve had against him and to see what he’s done lately. You mention staying true to what got you here. What kind of adjustments are required as you learn the league etc. JM – You’re constantly making adjustments. One of the biggest things is body of work, rather than the amount of work. Used to be able to get into the cage and swing swing swing but now it’s making sure I feel good and head out there, saving some for the game.
  11. I see what you did there
  12. Dang - thought they were getting something started there...
  13. I think Herrmann was pulled from the game for an injury - sore wrist
  14. OH - that's why Gardy always wants at least three "catchers" - I think Antony is just confused by what Gardy is asking for.
  15. hope these long at-bats are contagious. . .
  16. that was a pretty good at bat by Santana!
  17. trying to "watch" the game at work - what is the delay right now?
  18. Great job to get the Twins off the field and back to the plate
  19. Not a bad half inning - the Twins can stay in this one if they can have a few more like that
  20. Mauer's got 50 base hits for the year now! ... 41 singles.
  21. Two out extra base hits will haunt
  22. Can the Twins trade for Alex Rios and just play him in home games?
  23. So, I take it that Martinez is a fly-ball pitcher?
  24. I'll read just about anything if it's linked in a TD post. My apologies to Leo Tolstoy.
