  1. I would not be surprised if the team that signs Tomas has him in AAA for the first part of the season. If the Twins manage to somehow sign him, I guess they'd have him on 25-Man right away as they have a real need for another outfielder, but it seems like the raw power and poor plate discipline could use a month against a lower level first . . . 24/25 is old for a prospect if they've been in the minors for awhile, it's not quite so old for an international free agent. Daniel Carbonell, the Cuban defector that signed earlier this year with less fanfare, is about a year younger and he managed to get promoted by the Giants from rookie ball to Single A at age 23. I think timing will factor in heavily here. Tomas will probably not sign until after the World Series (MLB doesn't want headlines that distract from the games), so that almost another month for teams to temper their expectations. The Twins would probably have to overpay to get him, but I don't think they will offer what is the current rumored rate of a $100MM contract. They might offer a contract between 60 and 75 MM, which is still probably an overpay. It just depends on what other interested teams like the Cubs, Phillies, Mets think the right price is for Tomas.
  2. I agree that a month is reasonable - and honestly, I think they should take as much time as it takes to find the right person for the job. I just got the impression from the media reports that it was going to be a short process. On the other hand, if Molitor or Mientkiewicz are the leading candidates, the Twins can take their time. It's not like those two guys are going to take another job in the meantime.
  3. Someone mentioned in another thread that Glynn had ties to Joe Maddon - they worked together at some point?
  4. hmm - I was thinking that the Twins would be announcing the new manager before this interview seems to be taking place..
  5. Very small chance that the Twins will sign Tomas, however, the private workout rumor is further than the Twins have gone on any of the previous Cuban defectors. Being "in on" a guy is pretty meaningless, I agree.
  6. I would say it's a 5% chance. The Twins did not go as far as scheduling a private workout with any of the other guys. He's expected to make more because he's younger than the other guys.
  7. This is certainly interesting ... The Twins are trying to schdule a workout with Yasmany Tomas?!?! Signing Tomas would definitely increase the payroll, he's expected to get a contract with a total value over $100MM http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/10/al-central-notes-anderson-tomas-sox-cabrera.html
  8. If the Twins hire Mike Maddux, it's possible Greg could follow. I think Greg is a special assistant / coach with Texas currently with his brother.
  9. So Cool! Did everybody catch Nick Punto's great-great grandpappy sliding into first? Walter Johnson's crazy sidearm delivery was fun to watch, too.
  10. HGH is a helluva drug. I don't think Bonds ever failed a drug test while he was playing, did he? He obviously used performance enhancing substances, but I don't recall a situation in which he took a specifcally banned substance. It's a semantic argument, sure, but that's the case for every player. Greenies weren't banned when Mays and Aaron were playing, they are banned now. Bonds admitted to taking substances that were esentially steroids, but not specifically on the list of banned substances. He cheated, but I still like him more than, say, Clemens or A-Rod. It's too bad, because he was probably HOF worthy before he was using. Jeter is more than likely clean, and he doesn't have any close association with any confirmed users (other than Andy Pettitte) - he played with Clemens, A-Rod, Giambi, etc., but I think the general feeling is that Jeter did not cheat. I think Jeter gets a boost for "playing the right way" but even that is not enough to get 100%
  11. Just because it's so ridiculous, here are Barry Bonds' Triple Slash lines for 2001-2004 MVP seasons: .328 / .515 / .863 .370 / .582 / .799 .341 / .529 / .749 .362 / .609 / .812 Yeah, pretty darn good.
  12. Maybe Alceides Escobar, but Eddie I think needs another season with similar or better numbers before he's the centerpiece in a trade.
  13. Not from Dougie's side, anyway... http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-120065654.html
  14. That might happen if the Phillies fire Ruben Amaro - he wouldn't trade Marlon Byrd for a package like that, I'm guessing he wants even more for Hamels - he'd probably get as a far as "Buxt-" before Ryan hangs up the phone.
  15. Or maybe someone within the Twins minor leagues gets a call up to be the big league pitching coach - or even the recently departed Gary Lucas? Molitor I'm sure is familiar with him from Spring training? BTW, Molitor did play with current Pirates' Pitching Coach Ray Searage in the 80's in Milwaukee (84, 85, part of 86 before Searage was traded) . . .
  16. I guess in 2010 the Twins expected to still have guys like Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Liriano and even Nick Blackburn in the rotation in 2014. That strategy has been torpedoed by injuries and regression. Unfortunately the re-inforcements from the minors didn't materialize in 2011-2014. May and Meyer might both contribute in 2015, but it's been a long road back and the Twins aren't particularly close yet. They have been using band aids to try to heal a pretty nasty flesh wound. They've spent like a small market club along the way, the veteran arms haven't provided much more than age, and with the exception of Hughes, the new faces have disappointed. I feel like the rotation will be very good by the time Berrios makes it to the show, but it's been a very long wait for relevance.
  17. Molitor played on some teams with some good pitching - Blue Jays and Brewers in particular, so I imagine he has some options for coaches. Jack Morris almost seems too obvious a choice - as they are both St. Paul kids, they were teammates in Toronto (right? or did they miss each other by a year?), they've been hanging around the Twins for the last few years... Whether that would be a good choice .... I dunno.
  18. It would be pretty impressive for a manager to move from A to the majors, championship or not. I think the Twins Org. likes Mientkiewicz a lot, so a promotion to AA makes sense to start.
  19. It might not be a big enough deal for MLB Trade Rumors to mention - but there is the issue of what the Twins will do with the trio of Herrmann, Parmelee, and Colabello. I think at least two of those guys will be removed from the 40 man, most likely the last two. The Twins will need to make room for some of the new kids, some the fringy players may be removed. Not really sure what the Twins think of Nuñez - it seems like he was a valuable utility guy, but maybe they will prefer Escobar as their long-term Eduardo.
  20. Beat me to it - thanks for posting it! I like that they acknowledge the key areas for improvement - the rotation and the outfield. I wouldn't be disappointed if the Twins managed to sign McCarthy, the GB% is a good point for a team like the Twins with a better infield than outfield defensively. Commenters are quick to point out the bad Pelfrey contract (thanks)
  21. It's still early in the process, though, right? They will still interview several more candidates before making a decision, even if Molly is their guy.
  22. Or, could Target Field be elevated about 5,000 feet? It'd be cold in April, but maybe worth it?
  23. I flipped on the tv to check the weather forecast last night and the WCCO sports guy said Molitor and the Twins have already met - he added that the Twins would "also talk to Steinbach, but not Mientkiewicz" This is the first time I've heard that he might be out of the running for the job - did anyone hear this from any other source? It was a kind of last second off the cuff comment, so I wonder if the guy had a tip from someone, or if he was just making a wild guess . . .
  24. Volquez was doing ok for most of his outing, and got knocked around towards the end. Giving up the Grand Slam pretty much sealed the deal for the Giants and sealed the fate of the Pirates. If Volquez had induced a ground ball against Crawford, it's likely a much different story.
