  1. Which appears to be the trend in the latest couple of drafts and trades by the Twins, no? Outside of feeling beholden to drafting what appeared to be a potentially superstar talent in Buxton.
  2. Looks like Herrmann took his good play while up with the Twins back to Rochester. Seems like he's been listed in the hitting notes for every game since going back down.
  3. Dozier seems to be trending up at the moment where Florimon is trending down. But they've still got 3.5 months of baseball to play to see if the trends continue. I've been happy with Dozier's defense at 2nd, we'll see if his hitting can warrant more time or not, but I'm hopeful. Florimon continues to frustrate with errors on what appears to be routine plays, and then makes great plays on non-routine stuff. Imagine if we didn't have a decent defensive 1B. He needs to start hitting again, though, cause recently it's been really bad. Rosario is almost certainly viewed as the starting 2B no later than mid-2015, and probably much earlier. But finding a starting SS is a little harder as we have a lot of guys playing the position who don't necessarily profile as a long-term major leaguers. Niko Goodrum might have the highest ceiling of the bunch as a SS, but he also seems the most unpolished right now. I'm really interested in Polanco, but he never seems to get a ringing endorsement at SS, it always feels more like "he can play there if nobody else can." Hopefully it's just the spotlight shining so brightly on some of the better-known prospects leading to the relative lack of SS fanfare. If Dozier's bat keeps trending up such that he got his OPS in the .700 neighborhood would we be willing to give him another chance at the SS job when Rosario's ready, or has that boat already sailed?
  4. Liriano column at SportsOnEarth: What's behind Francisco Liriano's resurgent season? | SportsonEarth.com : Howard Megdal Article It'll be interesting to see if this lasts. Everyone here knows he always had the talent, it was just a matter of whether he could keep it together to use it or not. I think I'm kinda rooting for him even though it'd be disappointing for him to put it together elsewhere, but I like the notion of something going right in Pittsburgh.
  5. Is Carroll a potential release candidate? I like him defensively, but his offense has been worse than terrible this year. He's got a .520 OPS. Hicks (.575) and Dozier (.603) have both been bad enough to make many people think they should go back to AAA, so why no calls for Carroll to go?
  6. I have to agree with this. Parmelee's build just seems a little different such that he doesn't look like somebody who should be able to run, but he actually moves fairly well. He's no burner, but he puts Willingham and Doumit to shame, and then some. That doesn't make him a good CF candidate, but if my option is Clete Thomas, I'm going with Parmelee. I am curious if Herrmann will get a chance, though. He's playing fairly well for the moment, might as well run him out there.
  7. Isn't that kind of the point? Some people are just better at some things than others. Maybe his pace should be getting to AA this year. It's not about it being a race, per se. It's about letting his talent be tested in the proper environment. If somebody is just flat out better than everyone he's playing with, isn't it time to start looking to move him to a more suitable environment? I'm not really advocating anything as of yet, cause I'm assuming he'll hit A+ in a couple weeks or so, and then we start learning more. But I think keeping an open mind to anything with ludicrous talent makes sense. The biggest knock on Buxton seems to be his understanding of stealing bases. Really? That's hardly important enough to hold somebody back. If he hits again at Ft. Myers, why not think about New Britain this year? It's not necessary? What does necessary have to do with it. The question should be "can he benefit from it?", and so far I think the evidence says he might. If he stumbles at Ft. Myers, so be it, but if he rips it up, we probably have one of those once-in-a-blue-moon talents that you should be willing to alter your normal pattern for.
  8. I really liked Walker in the game yesterday. He made an acrobatic catch near the end of the game, and he stole a base comfortably. I'm really intrigued by someone with his power who's actually an athlete to go with it.
  9. If he rakes in AA I wouldn't be totally shocked if he got a September call-up. Lord knows the fans are definitely wishing for something to get excited about, you want them to come back out to the stadium next year, give them a taste of the future slugger in the lineup. The lack of 40-man status would make it less likely, but by September they'll easily have 2 or 3 good candidates to drop that wouldn't factor into their future plans. I'm not really expecting it, but I wouldn't be surprised by it.
  10. I've seen this numerous times already in the discussion about Eades. 77 strikeouts in 96 innings. He's not the top flamethrower in the draft obviously, but can't miss bats? That's 7.2 k/9 which seems like a solid number to me.
  11. Does it matter? We have two ridiculously good prospects, and which one is better doesn't make much difference to me. The raving about Buxton going on is pretty cool, but man, Sano is just crushing what is supposed to be a pitchers' league. Those two in the same lineup someday should be a lot of fun.
  12. I went with Stewart for this. Seems like he has the highest upside. We have plenty of depth in our farm system right now, I'd rather see them add more high-end quality than gambling on McGuire + ? to add quantity. Essentially all the pitching possibilities bandied about as possibilities leave a bit of concern, so I say go with the one who looks like he has the highest ceiling. Trey Ball is interesting because he's a lefty, but sounds a bit more risky. It's funny, I almost wish we weren't picking 4th, cause I really like the possibility of McGuire, a top-end HS catcher hitting our system now would be pretty good timing I would think, we've probably got another 3-4 years of Mauer being the primary catcher, but I just don't think McGuire should be #4.
  13. It'd be a disappointment to not get a pitcher, but I'm more confident (if WAGs from the uninformed can actually contain confidence, anyway) in Kris Bryant being a legit player than the other choices. Getting a #1 pitcher might be better in the long-term, but my confidence isn't as high they get a standout pitcher as it is in Bryant being a standout. You want draft choices that high to become strong big leaguers some day, whoever is most likely to (Bryant) gets my vote.
  14. The time to send him back to AAA was a month ago. He appears to be figuring things out now, and while he's got a long ways to go yet, I'm no longer certain going back helps him develop as a player. It might help the team some if he could be replaced by someone who would produce better stats, but I find myself doubting he personally learns/grows more at AAA than staying up at this point. He would be moving from "improving slowly against the best there is" to "hitting against inferior talent to what he was facing" and then has to come back up again at some point and readjust to superior talent to what he had just been learning against. How much confidence does he gain if he goes back down and crushes AAA compared to how much confidence he gains by gradually succeeding at MLB? Does a demotion demoralize him enough that he takes the entire season to get it together again? (Those were both rhetorical, as they can't be answered without access to Hicks's brain) If they were in serious contention for the playoffs or had a legitimate candidate to replace him you would feel confident could outperform him it might be more adviseable, but I can't really see that at this point.
  15. I kind of like this notion. Has Gardenhire ever done a platoonish lineup, same players, just different spots in the order depending on a righty or lefty starting? I can't recall it in Gardy's time, but I readily recall the days of Hrbek batting 4th against righties and 7th against lefties under TK.
  16. This is the post I find to be the thinking in line with mine. In a couple months we should have a few more candidates to dump from the 40-man to open up that spot, then we can call him up in September. Let him DH the last month of the season if his defense is still well below acceptable, but find out if he can hit anything off a major league pitcher.
  17. Our current starters don't generate any excitement to see them pitch. And many of them are bad on top of being boring, at least so far. The only one who honestly gives any hope beforehand of getting a "good pitching performance" is Diamond, and he doesn't have the kind of stuff to make it surprising when he doesn't. I used to expect decent pitching games from Pavano much moreso than these guys, and Pavano was hardly an elite pitcher. Give me something interesting to watch. I know I'd rather watch Gibson pitch than any of the starters we have right now, even if he looked overmatched once he started pitching at this level. I'd rather watch a rookie top prospect get shelled than a 30-year-old journeyman. I'd rather watch Deduno, even as a 30-year-old journeyman, than any of them just for the suspense factor and the chance for brilliance. I's been a month-and-a-half of watching more bad than good starting pitching. Why wouldn't you want to shake that up?
  18. Have you ever looked at Olympic sprinters? Those guys are ripped. It's about putting on the right kind of muscle and using it properly. If he does nothing but add weight, sure, he might slow a hair, but if he puts in the work properly, that added muscle could actually make him faster. Granted a baseball player's training regimen is not going to be optimized to increasing his speed at the expense of other factors, but filling out is certainly not any guarantee that he'll slow down. That usually happens with time and years passing.
  19. He's going to get way more at-bats left-handed than right-handed if he remains a switch-hitter, so as encouraging as last night was we still have a long ways to go before we know what Hicks can be. I'm as hopeful as anyone he can be really good, he's nearly my ideal profile for a center fielder, but we're still in SSS territory with Hicks, and one great game as a RH hitter doesn't immediately change his outlook. Boy that was a fun game to watch, though!
  20. Remember that time long ago when it seemed the Twins outfield was going to be too crowded, so they traded away a couple of their major league starters to start making room? Buxton, Arcia, Hicks (fingers crossed he finds his game again), Kepler, now Walker staking a claim. I think if I was an outfielder I didn't just name in the Twins system I'd be tempted to do something stupid to try and get the Twins to waive/trade me so I could try somebody else's system to have a chance. His bat is obviously rocking at the moment, but what does Walker look like defensively?
  21. I've come to this conclusion about the Twins this season: I pretty much have no idea what's going to happen. That's an improvement after the last couple years when I could mostly count on losing. Nice to be in the vicinity of .500 at this point of the season, and I'll enjoy it for as long as it lasts (which could very well be the whole season).
  22. Pure speculation, but I can't help wondering if the presence of Buxton in the Twins system now isn't good motivation for Sano after a couple years of being the defacto best prospect by a good margin. Regardless, the early returns this year for many of our prospects are certainly exciting.
  23. After two terrible seasons, it's somewhat understandable to set low expectations and hope for a pleasant surprise. But I like your sentiment, let's see where the season takes us before declaring it over.
  24. This seems like it would be such a fun team to watch. I have relatives in Iowa which made me wonder about making a trip at some point, but they're way up in the Northeast part of Iowa, so it would still be a bit of a haul (2+ hours) to get down to a game. Doable, so I may have to try anyway.
  25. What kind of prospect is Antoan Richardson going to be? I had noticed his stolen bases already when glancing through stuff, but I honestly had never even heard of him before. Just looking at his numbers and his physical size (5'8", 165 lbs.) I would assume he'd be in the vein of Revere or Mastroianni? Does he look to have that kind of potential?
