  1. Sorry, only half-watching so didn't notice. The Red Sox announcers are saying this game decides the Mayor's Cup. So something to play for. That last run after the pop-up into the left outfield corner was a fluke and should have been caught by Garlick. A weird one. I'm sure he's not pleased about that. On the other hand, Astudillo has been fun to watch today. Hitting, hustling, and hassling Bogaerts after Bogaerts tried pulling his leg off second base earlier.
  2. Twins getting aggressive on the base paths the past couple days. More of this, please.
  3. Much better Jose. Looks like he's settling in.
  4. Oy. Two hitters up, two long balls gone.
  5. I'd like to harness Dobnak's magic right out of the gate, but understand that assurances may have been made to others. Is any thought being given to a 6-man rotation to start the season? Would there be any resistance from Maeda and Berrios? My understanding of Maeda's contract is that it's incentive-heavy, tied to innings, so that could be a consideration. Otherwise I think a 6-man rotation is a good way to ease us into a season that promises to be almost three times as long as last year. Injuries or poor play will inevitably get us back to five starters soon enough.
  6. Gameday operator cut out early to avoid the traffic? Two pop outs and a KO at our end, so the same ol' same ol'. This game was for the benefit of management; they needed to see which relievers were making the cut. Cut-down day, I think.
  7. Game over. She hasn't asked for bail money, so win-lose, I guess.
  8. Bats still in hibernation, apparently. Very quiet. Only noise being made today is by that **** whistler.
  9. My sister-in-law is at the game. She says the shrill whistler heard on the telecast is right in front of her. I've asked her to bop him on the head with a bat. If you're watching and notice the whistling stop, you'll know what happened.
  10. Interesting approach today: 7 innings, 7 relief pitchers, an inning each. Several have looked good. No one has stood out, although I'm only half-watching. Maybe Stashak. Colome gave up a hit but struck out the side.
  11. How close to Haight and Ashbury were you? I lived at Haight and Clayton (a block away) in the early, ahem, '80s. Long time ago.
  12. We've got ourselves a shortstop. Bang bang. Quick release. I think Jorge and Simmons are going to be a terrific duo.
  13. Stolen bases from Polanco and Buxton -- I like it!
  14. Hot Wheels. Now with Supercharger!
  15. Split the difference and call it half the season. That's an awful lot of rope or leeway to give a guy who's been a decent but not great hitter, has one total hit in three playoffs, and is currently mired in a slump that goes back to last year. Again, I like Max in terms of potential, but delivery is lagging. A platoon with Rooker could make sense to start the year. If Max is still struggling, we've got two lefties waiting in Kirilloff and Larnach. Either's bat may make more sense than Max's defense. Hitting looks like our problem this year. As it was last year. Half a season of bad hitting from a key position will put us in a hole we won't climb out of now that Chicago is contending.
  16. Kepler's exit velocity today: 0 Three ABs, 3 KOs. I like Kepler as our right fielder, but I hope he doesn't cost us any games when they start counting. A platoon might not be farfetched unless/until he starts hitting.
  17. On the plus side, 5 homers, including a tape-measure shot from Sano. Had our pitching been a little less hapless... Max is not looking good right now, and it's not for lack of effort. Three more KOs while hitting cleanup.
  18. Follow-up question: Can JAs be traded? Was hoping to see more from our new No. 4 starter today.
  19. Unclear. Waiting to hear an update from the Red Sox announcers, but their focus is elsewhere. Mitch was either hit by a foul tip on the wrist (initial call), or the bat caught him. He was charged with catcher's interference, so that suggests the latter, but the announcers never said that. He sat on the ground for a couple minutes trying to flex his thumb, then was pulled as a precaution.
  20. Of course there are the standard disclaimers: 1) It's only spring training. 2) This may or may not be the Red Sox starting lineup. 3) Hitters may be working on a few things. 4) Yada, yada Even so, Dobnak is on to something good right now. Here's hoping it carries through the year. I'm knocking on wood.
  21. Ran-dy! Ran-dy! Ran-dy! I love how fast the guy works. He's a machine. No Gibby nibbling. I'm a believer. Good to see the bats coming alive. That was a no-doubter by Donaldson.
  22. Sure looks like Astudillo and Garlick both want to make the team. Kepler? He's like truth still putting his shoes on, slow to join the game. Come on Max. The season starts in just over a week. Some signs of life would be nice. The alternative could be a platoon.
  23. Hard not to pull for the son of a guy named Joe Law. I can't help but picture Jack Webb of Dragnet fame with a baseball in his hand, ready to dispense some hard justice. You just know this guy is familiar with chin music. With his solid four-pitch mix, is there any possibility of making Derek Law into a long reliever? Let's say we begin the year with a six-person rotation that includes Dobnak. Law looks like he'd hold up pretty well in terms of durability.
