Plouffe is interesting. He was drafted in 2004 but didn't figure out minor league pitching until 2011. It translated to the Majors in 2014. Anyway, if another GM wants Plouffe, they can call Ryan, and it's rare for a player to be truly untouchable. Plouffe certainly isn't. But I do have a hard time seeing what kind of trade would make sense. He's not good enough to bring back elite talent, but he's too good to give up for a limited return. And he only has 2 years left under team control after this season.

Article: Tommy Milone: Making A Statement
drivlikejehu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Keep in mind that a replacement-level MLB player is actually a good AAA player. Veterans produce in AAA all the time despite not being very good; clubs keep them around in case of emergency. That's what Milone is. He has no place in the Twins rotation now or in the foreseeable future.- 73 replies

Article: What To Make Of Eddie Rosario?
drivlikejehu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rosario is over-matched, and his defense won't come close to making up for the bad offensive numbers. -
Sano took walks in April, too, he was just striking out too much and not consistently hitting the ball well. Hopefully he stays comfortable at the plate and healthy.

I don't question Walker's work ethic. I'm sure he'd rather be an all around great hitter. But there is something missing from his skill set in terms of picking up pitch location and movement. I'm skeptical it's fixable, based on other prospects with similar issues.

I don't agree with Kepler or Walker being up, considering they are ranked fairly high to begin with. Kepler is a corner outfielder who doesn't walk or hit for power. Walker is basically a home run derby player more than a baseball player. I do think Duffey's stock has risen, though Seth had him a little high after last season so I don't know that he should really be much higher even with improvement.

Article: Is The Rotation Turning Around?
drivlikejehu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm mostly a skeptic because too many guys (rotation and bullpen) are muddling through without really looking sharp. I do think there is better depth than in the past few years, and that may well prevent things from getting totally out of hand if a few guys implode within a short period of time. There is some upside, but there is more probability on the regression side at this point.- 39 replies

Article: It's Time For Aaron Hicks
drivlikejehu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You're giving the Twins a lot of credit for plans that almost certainly don't exist, but even so... Hicks is not just succeeding at AAA. Factoring in his position, he is the best player in the International League. He's utterly dominating the league offensively, with a RC+ over 180. A couple weeks isn't going to make any difference in his 'mental makeup' or whatever other dubious factors are supposedly keeping him in Rochester. He's just too talented for that level of competition. If his intangibles are really that bad, the Twins should trade him. If they aren't, he should be with the Twins. Either way, Rochester is pointless. -
Definitely better than the stretch they had in '39-'45. It translates into hitting like an AL relief pitcher. Walker still has the same issues that led to him going in the 3rd round of the draft despite huge power. The light-bulb will either click (10% chance?) or won't, but he's not playing in a way that can translate to MLB in any capacity. He needs to figure out how to leverage his physical hitting ability into a legitimate, balanced approach at the plate.

Article: It's Time For Aaron Hicks
drivlikejehu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hicks clearly can play in AAA - it's just a waste of everyone's time to keep him there. There is zero question that Hicks is better than Schafer, and it isn't even close. Either the Twins should upgrade their own CF situation, or they should trade Hicks to someone else who will. -

Schafer is a bad centerfielder. He shouldn't be in the big leagues. -
There are always non-prospects that can be bumped. Wheeler in AAA (LOOGY at best), Peavey at AA, etc. You're not missing anything, he's not really a prospect.

Not that it diminishes the fact Berrios pitched very well, but McDaniel was already very high on Berrios per his pre-season prospect rankings... he ranked him 24th overall. There could be. Hitting fewer fly balls should result in a higher batting average but less power, generally speaking.

It makes no sense to move Plouffe off third base for Sano. Plouffe's improved defense there has made him a very solid player... a lot of that goes out the window as an outfielder. So the choice should be between moving Sano to a different position and trading Plouffe. Since I don't see Sano as a long-term third baseman, I think it makes more sense to consider moving Sano to the outfield until taking over for Mauer at 1B, assuming Sano gets back on track of course. The only issue there is that the Twins love Rosario, so there may not be an opening. Another possibility is that if Vargas doesn't put it together, to have Arcia and Sano split time between OF and DH, with Sano spelling Mauer at 1B also.

Article: WARNE: Trevor May; A Pleasant Surprise
drivlikejehu replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good write-up. May's stock had fallen quite a bit by the time the Twins acquired him, so even though he was somewhat well known as a prospect, there's no doubt his turnaround is surprising. He deserves a lot of credit for making adjustments. -
There's no question that the Twins have been completely incompetent in their handling of Hicks. The problem with your argument is that, regardless of how long the Twins wait, there is no guarantee Hicks will immediately produce upon returning to the Majors. Even a good, consistent player can have rough stretches. If Hicks comes up and doesn't really hit for a couple weeks, what difference will it make that he (yet again) had performed well in the minors? Either he can handle it mentally, or he can't. Playing well in Rochester will do nothing for him in that regard, anymore than his previous minor league success did in 2013 and 2014 with the Twins. He's 25, he's not the centerfielder of the future anymore, and he's clearly shown he can hit minor league pitching over the years. If he can't cut in the Bigs, so be it... but I don't see any reason to think the damage the Twins have done can be reversed by hanging out in the International League.

Hicks had a RC+ of 84 last year, Rosario's was 83; Hicks did it in the Majors, Rosario in AA. The latter is a far more spectacular failure. For whatever reason, Hicks has been a favored whipping boy for the Twins organization and many fans. Other players make "mental mistakes" all the time but catch little or no heat for it. Rosario himself has had issues beyond his lackluster performance. For a temporary call up, I can see the argument against promoting Hicks, but the quoted post is hyperbolic in its criticism of Hicks and far removed from reality.
-
Rosario's AFL performance was almost exactly league average. His 2013 AA performance was also right around league average. True, he was 21, but for an alleged top prospect that isn't out of the ordinary. Noting that he could have a lucky streak isn't much of an argument... that could be used to justify almost any move.
