    That video would be in my lowlight reel pitch to Bud Selig for making an actual objective pitch location display as available to stadium fans as the score. Potential riot if that's a Sox player rung up on that pitch.

    Just turned on the game. Morales sort of looks to me like David Ortiz would if somebody surgically removed his gut and reattached it to his butt. Nice confidence builder to get a double and two RBI against one of the best starters in baseball. Will be a while before we see if we get anything from Pryor or Vargas, but it's good to see even baby steps toward an actual rebuild, even with long shots.

    Would have been pretty ok with Milone for Suzuki (or Willingham, even pre-implosion). Had no idea Fuld had trade value at all, let alone 'late 20's 4th starter with 3 years of team control' value. Seeing the Tigers and A's load up for the pennant race reminded me of teams going for broke when it used to be just East, West, and two playoff teams in the LCS. At least statistically, we just saw Verlander become a fifth starter. Either one or two Tiger starters better than any on the Twins staff will watch the playoffs from the bullpen.

    Willngham appeared on several lists of 'most likely to be traded' lists before his July crash. Too bad they didn't make a push to move him sooner, but considering they got zero for Cuddy or Kubel, not terribly surprising.

    How is Zobrist not a part of the deal if Austin Jackson is going to the Mariners? Guess offense doesn't matter if Verlander is your fifth starter.

    Freely admit that my imagination is limited, but it can't come up with any realistic scenario where the Twins accomplish something memorable because Kurt Suzuki was a key part of it. Again, ok player, good guy, over 30, rebuilding, turn the page, even if the next page is (gasp!) gambling on Pinto. FA options are always limited to some extent. That being said, the Twins entered the season without a major league center fielder on the 25 man roster, and today traded away one acquired on waivers for what could be argued is their new number two starter. So my feeling is that Twins should reject the drive for mediocrity that a Suzuki extension represents, and focus on rebuilding that involves actual rebuilding.

    What?!? 30ish AB's against legit MLB pitching isn't an indication of being ready?

    He's a 30+ backup catcher on a contender. What rebuilding team extends that? He's an ok player and a nice guy, but if this happens, this is the Twins trying to put entertainment on the field instead of a winning team.

    That was my initial impression as well. But Beane sacrificed a relatively small part of the A's future. Cespedes is a good but not great OF who is already expensive, will get a long, expensive contract after next season, and will turn 30 before that deal starts.

    And he's a free agent after next season, at age 30. It's not a rental for a young, cheap player, it's a rental for a lease. As for the Twins being players in the trade market today, well, my super-simple forecaster of all things Twins the past few years has been to close my eyes and imagine the best outcome for the Twins not happening, and don't mean to brag, but it's been incredibly accurate. That forecaster is telling me the Twins will do nothing of significance to the future of the franchise. Yes, that's not exactly a Nostradamus prediction, since they have almost nothing to deal. But that's the real story, not the deadline and what they do. The real story is that this is a team that's been rebuilding for three consecutive seasons in a row, and is poised to do nothing of note at the deadline for a third consecutive season, and for the most part couldn't if they wanted to. And though I'm a fan of the Span/Revere trades, it should be noted that in retrospect, the organization clearly made those deals due to their impression that Aaron Hicks was a Mauer-esque, can't-miss prospect who rendered them completely disposable. Oops. In other words, today is just another day of the Twins reminding us that there is a difference between rebuilding and just waiting for prospects to come up.

    Over the past four seasons, my interest level in the Twins has gone through three phases in descending order, roughly in thirds: 'Reasons I can't watch the Twins game' phase, 'Reasons I decide not to watch the Twins game' phase, and 'Reasons I decide that I will watch the Twins game' phase. This occurred to me as I realized that I had told myself that I should try to be able to watch tonight because Hughes is pitching. Hoped he would be an upgrade, liked the relative youth and upside, but never expected this from him. Too bad the ERA masks how good he's really been.

    Prior to the 2014 season, Pelfrey hadn't been effective and healthy for three seasons in a row. It doesn't get much more predictable than that. Also, to the extent that the theory that staying healthy is an athletic skill (albeit difficult to measure, let alone predict) may be true, the Twins scouting and FO bear some degree of responsibility for its deficiency in finding not only talented players, but ones who can stay healthy as well. At any rate, it would appear that fans are increasingly unwilling to accept simple misfortune as a defense for the most thoroughly disappointing season since 2011, or as a defense for the franchise in general, for that matter.

    Well, one Twins commandment is that 'walks will haunt', and we can't have 'Slimer' Meyer making Hughes and Co's control feel "so funky". At least not until roster expansion...

    And that's the thing about relief pitchers. Thanks to the massive pressure and focus on their performance late in close game, relievers and NFL kickers tend to be more memorable for their failures, and more so for relievers, since they can't directly help a team regain a lead late. Guerrier may not have a defining Puckett/Morris moment, but he was a good long reliever and then setup guy over a stretch where the Twins were usually in the hunt. That's a good Twins legacy. And he's designated but not retired, which means that he if he can catch on somewhere for a cup of coffee, he'll pitch past his 36th birthday, which is only 10 days away. That's great longevity for any ballplayer, and even more so for a RH reliever who didn't secure closer cred in his prime. And he did it pitching for only two teams, not as a hired gun, stopgap waiver-wire guy. That's a good career legacy.
