  1. Sorry, scrap. Thanks for actually reading what I write, but if you're looking for insight, as opposed to goofiness, for example, well.. http://www.overthinkingit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/dread-pirate-roberts-300x224.jpg ...get used to disappointment. If it's any consolation, the story is entirely and verifiably true minus two key points. 1) Thanks to a dreadfully onerous non-disclosure agreement, any serious attempt to rightfully credit my cousin Bruce as even a co-writer of BBTL will result in Columbia Records' privately owned Blackhawks dropping Minigun fire and ex-special forces mercs on casa de Bombo. They warning-buzzed us tonight, dude. And yes, the Blackhawk helicopter was... wait for it... black. 2) The Tempest's speedometer topped out at 120. So even though it seemed we were going 500 miles per hour, we may not have even broken the 300 mph threshold for all I know. But our aerodynamic shock wave knocked a dude off a moped, that much I'm certain of.
  2. Common misconception. Actually it was Bruce. My cousin Bruce. We were fishing with my other cousin, Larry (no really), from a gravel road in central Minnesota. Larry 'caught' Bruce in the neck with a Daredevil, and my grandma drove us at just under the speed of sound in her Pontiac (police interceptor version) Tempest to the closest retired country doctor's lake home. Bruce semi-fainted and bonked his head a bit, and we agrees on the way that the light that he saw was significant and should be commemorated, even if everything else he saw seemed like pure rubbish at the time. My panicky Etch-a-sketch recording of his vision is the song classic you know today. Oh, and Bruce survived the Daredevil strike. He owns a bowling alley and is a great dad.
  3. Thank goodness you pointed that out to me, I've been singing along thinking it was the fire engine guy. Phew! On a totally unrelated note, holiday weekend coming up. Who's going down to Prior Lake?
  4. Dude, that's, like, a felony or something.
  5. He reminded me of my favorite Steve Miller song, Big Old Jed's Pet Rhino. Luckily he never did 'carry me too far away'.
  6. It's sort of like an air conditioner that doesn't really work even when it's working. It differs from an air conditioner in that instead of phase change to cause cooling, it relies on the placebo effect. It found widespread application (as opposed to use) in southern military base housing in the latter half of the 20th century, and it narrowly trailed deployment separation and money concerns as the third most common cause of divorce.
  7. They're overdue for a string of games that don't go over three hours. Or over four, for that matter. Twins must have yelled at Hughes from the dugout that TD game thread is worried about no swings and misses. Nice slider to get Perez on a bad swing.
  8. Good point, and it doesn't need to be a conventional left/right platoon. If you have a solid 'everyday' catcher who hits right-handed, a right-handed platoon partner who mashes lefties or has a laser arm can situationally maximize the days off depending on the opponent. At any rate, 'backup' catcher is setting at least a semantic, if not philosophical, low bar for a player who is guaranteed 40 starts right out of the gate, with injury subbing and pinch hitting probably pushing that aggregate game total north of a third of a season. "Part-time starter" is a more accurate title.
  9. Wait. Which "C word"? Scrapbooking profanity both alphabetically and with Dewey decimal system, so it's important to know.
  10. A game so bad that the umps would apparently rather risk hail and lightning to get it over with than suspend play for a few minutes. Good rule of thumb: if it's raining so hard that if it happened while watching your kid's JV game you'd run out onto the field and fireman carry them to the dugout or the car, probably time for a rain delay.
  11. Only if they don't drown first.
  12. He did, in a way. It was almost certainly an accident given the situation and the nature of the pitch, but I prefer to think of it as payback for the slide.
  13. There's definite potential in his background and he seems to be working hard at salvaging his career. He's not going to hit for average or power, but if he can draw walks like he's been doing, and play passable defense in center, there's some value there. With the shortage of alternatives, especially if the Twins commit to playing Santana at short, he has a decent shot at coming back next year if he continues to play well the rest of the way.
  14. Bert defended it and the ump let it go, so that's two professionals who confirm that it was within the existing rules. And I get the old school take that you do everything you can within the rules to break up the DP, because that's hustle and grit and playing the game The Right Way. That being said, the only reason that the play probably won't draw rules committee scrutiny in the off season is that Escobar wasn't seriously injured. Attempting to knock down an opponent by sliding so far out of the baseline that you can barely reach the bag doesn't add anything to the game for me, and it certainly contributes to injuries. The fact that Hunter could have touched the bag but didn't just emphasizes the fact that the rule needs to be changed to allow runner contact with the fielder only when the fielder is blocking the runner's most direct path to the base, rather than allowing him to deliberately run into another player. Middle infielders deserve the same level of protection as catchers, even if it's more difficult to implement.
  15. If Vegas put the over/under for number of Twins runs scored in a series against the best rotation in baseball at 40, is there any material possession you would not have wagered on the under, short of or possibly even including your house? That's why I don't gamble, and why I still am having a hard time processing what we've seen.
  16. You mean like, as a ballplayer, or... He'll turn 28 in a week or so, but he sure seems like a better bet than Fuld to contribute in the future if they retain him. If they don't, it will be interesting to see what the plan is. The last two plans for CF haven't worked out so well.
  17. In Not watching the game but came in for a break from the heat and saw the play. You could argue that he should have gone for the easy out instead of hurrying a bad throw. But you could also argue that Hunter was out due to the slide. When you miss the bag and go for the leg whip, you're making an argument for the rules committee to crack down on this play the way they did with stopping all-out assaults on catchers making the tag at home.
  18. Precision Fettering Dealio? Hoping no. But alternatives should be on the table.
  19. Well that was not a strike, any more than it was a boating accident...http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--WE9Gg0XqGo/UCQ2APV-AEI/AAAAAAAAIqk/4ifjKHBtE40/s1600/Jaws-chief-roy-scheider.jpg
  20. A little, but we were ready. Shades, sunblock etc. For the record, if there is one, wanted May to come out to start the 6th, but have bullpen and State Fair Deep Fried StickofButteronaStick Militia warmed up and ready to go.
  21. Absolut. Ly. But if it's a highly-touted kid who' s struggled so far in the majors, warm somebody the freak up. Put a little more wear on the BP arms, in exchange for a chance for Mayday to have a good start from both scouting and stats angles. Positive outcome has value.
  22. Good question. PC is only 83, Lions bullpen crushed by Vikings this series making a nailbiter less likely. But zero walks is probably the most compelling reason Gardy rewards Mayday with a 6th for eating his vegetables and doing his PtC homework. Nobody in the pen, with a one run lead and a previously flailing rookie on the mound. Suddenly worried about whether Gardy is giving up on the pennant...
  23. http://images.sodahead.com/polls/003156437/04586262_128744188863952580_xlarge.jpeg Yes. No need to ask.
  24. Was going to suggest a mod offer to act as a sober cab, but Santana's probably better off rolling the dice with Uber.
  25. That's definitely the kind of thing you think of at the end of another lost season. And that's coming from someone who was severely bummed about the position change and downturn in HoF consideration. So I'm just going to hope the time off saved wear and tear for the future, or helped him turn the corner further from the concussion aftermath, heal a wound in his personal life, or just find the missing set of car keys that had plagued his very soul. As long as he's back, it's all good either way.
