  1. Gameday isn't working
  2. Back when the rosters were released I thought it was interesting that he was listed as IF (which was obviously for him going to be 1B). Every other 1B on the roster is *yawn* so he's probably going to get some good playing time there, assuming he has some success..
  3. Terry seems to be making it easier to use his own words against him. We know the 2012 Revenue was $214mil - Let's just conservatively assume that stays the same in 2013 & 14 (lower attendance but more TV monies). 52% of $214mil = $111.28mil If we did nothing in the offseason our payroll would be almost exactly half of that. How, exactly does Terry plan to approach 52% of revenue going to payroll if he doesn't aggressively pursue free agents? We aren't idiots. I can see the quote coming now... "We weren't comfortable getting up to 52% of revenue with our payroll, with the free agents that were available" Well, Terry, then maybe you should have supplemented a little bit the last couple years by spending on some of the young-ish free agents that were available, with some 5-6 year contracts, instead of waiting until you were $55mil away from your target. They really pigeon holed themselves with the "52%" comment years ago. More and more, I get the feeling Bill Smith wanted to actually adhere to that statement and it ended up costing him his job.
  4. I'm kind of with golfboy1. Is Kepler really that great of a prospect? He's not a teenager any more but he seems to still get a pass as a youngster. Meanwhile, at the same level that Kepler ended at, you've got Adam Walker crushing it, but he's "old" for the level (he's only a year and a half older than Kepler) If the argument is "with the junk on our 40 man roster, why take the 1% chance that he gets taken," I suppose I can listen to that, but as was also point out, we start burning through options for a guy who's probably going to finish next year at Single A.
  5. Which, other than the words "Terry" and "Ryan" has nothing to do with anything posted above.
  6. Cleveland is the worst thing that's ever happened to Terry Ryan.
  7. There's no reason to sign any meaningful free agents until all of our minor league studs have entered their prime. [sarcasm]
  8. I agree with Shane Wahl above, where free agents can be used (flipped) to acquire young talent. The obvious model for this is the Cubs. The common first response to this is "we don't have the financial capabilities of the Cubs." While that is probably true, they started the year with a payroll a little over $100mil and with all of the trades they made, they look to be down in the $75 mil range (for a 2013 net payroll of $80-90mil) That sounds like a place where even Terry Ryan would admit we are comfortable. There are a myriad of reasons why a team might find themselves with payroll flexibility (lots of young players, new influx of revenue, tanking, etc). Not using that flexibility to improve your organization is what is truly the most frustrating thing for a fan to stomach (at least this fan). We stink. OK We're tanking. OK We had injuries. OK We're saving money. Not OK
  9. Terry Ryan seems to view free agency as a way to fill out a roster/pitching staff rather than improving a roster/pitching staff. Nobody is asking TR to use free agents to completely overhaul the roster/pitching staff, but we are too far away from competitive at this point to be flippantly ruling out ways to get us back to respectability.
  10. Well.... It's actually 75 as a catcher (73 starts), 29 as a DH, and 8 at 1B
  11. I'm in the camp that considers mobility more as "flexibility" than what you are considering it. They don't get into enough detail on the list to know which camp is "right"
  12. OK, Byron, it's time to Superstar up
  13. Playing Pinto every other day isn't going to cut it. Especially with this Hunter-esque smile http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/31851.png&w=65&h=90&scale=crop&background=0xcccccc&transparent=false
  14. 1 - Houston 3t - White Sox 3t - Miami 4 - Milwaukee 5 - Twins 6 - Cubs
  15. Burton Correia Perkins Doumit Willingham Mauer That's 6 guys with a guaranteed contract for next year. And we could probably trade any of them (maybe not Correia). Feels pretty mobile to me.
  16. Looks like me and Winston Smith are thinking along the same lines
  17. I don't think there is any way for us to really know how much the Twins have to spend, but this offseason will tell us if payroll reduction has just been a two-year blip on the radar that is due for a correction or if, regardless of what the CAN spend, they feel most comfortable in that 60-70mil range. (which would deservedly give us about a "10" on finance). The Twins have about $44 million tied up next season in their non-rookie contracts. Burton Correia Duensing Perkins Doumit Willingham Mauer at a minimum, we would be filling out the 25 man roster with 18 guys at roughly 500k each. That gets us to $53 million. Based on Ryan's comments earlier this year, we should be perfectly comfortable in the $80M area. Add in the fact that each team is getting $25M more in TV revenue starting in 2014. Based on the "half the revenue goes to payroll" comments of the past (although it's not like there are any extra expenses incurred to get the $25M), we should at a minimum be very comfortable in the $90M range. I think 99% of us would be shocked if they added $37M in 2014 contracts via free agency, but unless we get up to $80M, I think we are deserving of the "10" that ESPN gave us for finances
  18. I think this offseason will show us whether the Twins should be a 10 on finance or upper teens.
  19. One interesting way to view mobility is, if a team put it's entire 40 man roster on waivers, how many would get grabbed by the first team, how many would get grabbed in the first 5 teams, how many would get grabbed by only the top couple "finance" teams, and how many would go completely through waivers unclaimed.
  20. I would give Finance a full share rather than 2/3.
  21. Dodgers get a 20 for mobility? Ummm... What? The reply might be, their finances make their huge contracts mute, but that's already baked into their "30" for Finances But to your point, it doesn't matter that much to the overall score.
  22. So... 1a) Minnesota 1b) Cubs 2) Houston ????
  23. Surprised no Pinto
  24. The only value being 20 million under budget had was to take advantage of teams that were at, near, or over their budget limits. It's to bad that 20 million number only increased over the course of the year and was not leveraged to improve the future product. Opportunity wasted.
