  1. Since we're looking to rebuild for 2014 - I figure we should suck in 2013 as well. So here's to consecutive years of #2 choice, #1 choice and #1 choice in the drafts. Maybe if we're smart we can do what The Rays and the Nats did with their long periods of picking at the top and become perennial contenders. The Twins need to start drafting #1 and ace pitchers instead of 3's, 4's and 5's. How about some decent scouting and forget about pitch to contact guys for good.
  2. Guys that they should have gone after (although it would have cost money) are Erik Bedard, Bartolo Colon, and Joe Saunders. Also Oswalt is still out there.
  3. The need for FA pitching is a must, but actually Marquis has been one of our better starters (not that that's saying much). At this point I'd take 3 more Marquis as opposed to Liriano, Hendricks and Blackburn. The good news is that over the weekend, Gardy actually said we need to find a bunch of these guys that throw in the mid 90's and bring them up through the system - a possible change in philosophy over our pitch to contact philosophy? Of course the last rainbow of this storm we're putting up with this season is two straight years with a #1 or #2 pick in the draft. Now if we can just pick a Bryce Harper and Steven Strassberg.
  4. If I trade Span to the Nats, the guys I'm looking at are Alex Meyer 6' 9" RHP with mid 90's fastball, Kylin Turnbull 6' 5" LHP with mid 90's fastball and baby Lombo, a switch-hitting IF (mostly 2B) batting over .300 for Washington (and son of Lombo Sr. of the '87 champion Twins .) I'd take any 2 of 3 for Span, plus a throw-in lower level guy. Span is in his prime, having a great year, and reasonably priced.
  5. Once again trading a serviceable piece of the puzzle at their lowest value.
  6. Chang makes sense - I believe he can actually play all 4 IF positions
  7. Sorry - next time I'll link
  8. From Joe C's article in Strib: Quotes from Gardy: “A terrible night for Twins baseball. We got dominated by a very good pitcher over there. But we played terrible. We didn’t pitch worth a darn. Not aggressive. Missed a play or two. And got no-hit by a very good pitcher over there, which doesn’t make it any easier for our baseball team.” Gardenhire noted that the Twins had an off day Thursday to regroup before opening a three-game series in Seattle on Friday. Then he said, “Questions? And make them quick.” Asked if Liam Hendriks’ performance (2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER) made it tougher on the offense, Gardenhire said, “He just didn’t pitch well. The kid didn’t get anything done. We didn’t hold runners. They ran all over the place on us. All the little things that a baseball team’s supposed to do, we didn’t do. “Letting guys steal second, letting guys steal third. You go to the mound, you bring a pitcher in, tell him, ‘You’ve got to slide step. He’s going to steal third if we don’t.’ And and what do we do? The first pitch, pick your leg up and they take off running. If the guy hadn’t swung, he was standing up. “That’s not acceptable. That’s not good baseball by any team. So we have to do a lot better. Running all over us. Looked like Little Leaguers out there, and that’s a bunch of bull. “OK, that’s enough. I’m not going to go any further. Have a good night. Congratulations to Mr. Weaver.” You don't need a crystal ball to tell you that Hendricks is about to be sent down. I think heads are going to roll.
  9. One more move - demote Butera the second Mauer can catch, and bring up anything in his place. He's a waste on the bench, strike that, he's a waste on the team.
  10. I'm in - each are good calls
  11. Not saying I want Tosoni as a starter. But he had 35 hits last year for the Twins and over 1/3 of them were for extra bases - 7 doubles, 1 triple and 5 homers. He came through with a number of big pinch hits and seems like a better option than Mr. 14 strikeouts in 17 AB's, as a 4th outfielder. Right now I'd go with Mastroianni - right-handed with speed and more versatile.
  12. Now that he's off the DL why don't they toss Thomas and bring up Tosoni. He has as much power as Thomas, can play all 3 OF spots, and seems better suited to come off the bench to pinch hit. He was pretty successful last year. If not Tosoni, why not try Mastroianni - RH can play all 3 OF plus 1B and has spent time at 2B as well. More versatile, less power, more speed and is currently batting over .350 at Rochester. Just dump Thomas at this point, he's a wasted spot on the roster.
  13. Not saying only a 40 HR power guy is worth the first pick. Just saying that the Twins have 6-10 'toolsy' OF'ers already in the system. This team hoards prospects and doesn't make trades. Instead we end up cutting them after they've lost their value instead of bundling them to fill needs. Not all of our OF prospects or current guys like Span are going to be able to play together. Why not trade while they have value instead of losing guys like Slowey after he became worthless? Who's the last #1 type pitcher that the Twins actually drafted (not Rule 5) - Frank Viola? Actually, probably Garza, but they traded him. Their poor judgement of pitchers is the reason we can't win in the playoffs. We have a tendency to draft #3 & #4 starters.
  14. The Twins have had a number of these guys - they just choose to not hang onto them - Ortiz, Hunter, Kubel, Cuddyer, Hardy and Thome are just a few that come to mind off the top of my head.
  15. The only way I would take Buxton is if you can guarentee him to be a 40 HR / 120 RBI guy. Being a Heyward, 18 HR / 72 RBI guy with a possibility of 25 HR / 90 RBI, those guys are a dime a dozen. If Buxton is a lock for 40 HR, then yes. But the Twins need starting pitching - yesterday. We have no rotation for next season, whatsoever. Blackburn, Hendricks, Gibson coming off TJ surgery, Swarzak, Diamond - not exactly a stable of aces. At this point they need a pitcher with a ton of upside. And yes, I'd take a long look at Appel, Gausman, Zimmer, Giolito, Fried, and Wacha. My guess with Giolito is that if he drops below the tenth pick, he ends up going to UCLA, and makes himself available in next year's draft, and at the rate the Twins are going, we could have a top two pick next year as well.
  16. I want to throw up with this bench - Gardy has no options - Burroughs .118 Av / .167 OBP / .343 OPS; Thomas .182 Av / .217 OBP / .581 OPS (+12 strikeouts in last 14 AB's!); Butera lifetime ,178 Av / .220 OBP / .481 OPS. The loss of Morneau will be massive. According to him (Morneau) he's been hurting since the series with the Rays. The last time he felt okay was against the Yankees.
  17. Didn't Dmitri have alcohol problems as well?
  18. I'm hoping that the Astros take Buxton, so the Twins aren't tempted to take another 'toolsy' high school outfielder. They already have a glut of outfielders - Benson, Hicks, Morales and others. I could see taking Zunino or Correa, but depending on healing, I'm still intrigued by Giolito. He's a clone of Verlander and the Twins have a desperate need for a true ace. That being said, Appel, Zimmer and Gausman would also be good choices. With next year's projected starting rotation of Blackburn, Hendricks, and at this point I don't know (maybe Swarzak, Diamond and Gibson). They desperately need starters. 2014 looks to be the year the next crop of players comes through. But I do trust the Twins to make the right choice. Despite the busts they have drafted, they have also drafted some nice pieces in the first round - Mauer, Parmalee, Ploufe, Revere, Span, and Perkins on the current team, plus guys like Hunter and Cuddyer. They do need some scouts who can spot pitchers.
  19. You forgot to replace Liriano as well
  20. One word - hypnotism. Give him confidence and consistency. He claims he wants to do whatever is best for him and the team. What wuld be best for him and the team at this point would be to go back to Rochester for a few weeks work.
  21. Willingham will be back - he signed a 3-year deal.
  22. Maybe we could occasionally play Hughes at 3rd - that would push Valencia! Oops
  23. Last year after the Twins traded Jim Thome, Gardy said having a one dimensional player on the bench really hamstrung him. I guess he just can't handle a good bench. We opened the season with one of the strongest Twins benches in years - Revere for speed and defense, Burroughs - for a professional left-handed bat who could play corner infield, Plouffe - a versatile right-handed bat who can play infield and outfield, and Hughes - another infielder with right-handed pop. I get that Revere needs to play every day and needs more seasoning and Thomas is an adequate replacement for him. But Butera for Hughes makes me want to throw up. Butera is just as one dimensional as Thome - only worse. Why would you ever use Butera to pinch hit off the bench. If Mauer or Doumit get injured during a game and you use Willingham for a few innings for one game and call up Butera for the next day it's no big deal. If MLB had a taxi squad of players available only in an extreme emergency you could carry an emergency catcher. But since they don't, leave Butera a plane ride away at Rochester.
  24. Bad move - Twins are way too left handed. Hughes was a versatile power option for the bench. Right now the only right-handed hitters are Willingham, Carroll, Valencia, Plouffe, plus switchers Doumit & Casilla. 13 pitchers? I found an article from the late '70's (from the Sporting News) about the White Sox under Tony LaRussa. He was trying to decide whether to go with a 9-man pitching staff or an 8-man, that's right 8 pitchers. Now I realize that times have changed, but it wasn't that long ago that teams regularly used 10 or 11 pitchers. Quality pitchers who can go a couple of innings every other day would go a long way to improve a team. Hughes was never given a chance. Burroughs doesn't have the power a corner infielder should have. The ONLY way this is acceptable is if Dozier is brought up to start at short, move Carroll to second and make Casilla utility. They will regret the move when Casilla gets injured, later this season - as he always does.
  25. Who gets sent down today when they put Marquis on the 25 man? Does Liriano have any more options? If so send him down for a rotation of Pavano, Blackburn, Marquis, Hendricks and Swarzak - but keep an eye to the waiver wire - or Oswalt?
