  1. Personally, I'd rather have Baker, Feldman and Villanueva over Corriea and Pelfrey, although the Cubs have been overpaying as badly as the Twins. The Corriea contract is the worst for money spent, although the Feldman contract isn't far behind.
  2. Much prefer Lannan to Corriea
  3. Heck, I'd go Willingham, Morneau, $7M and Corey Williams/Matt Hauser or Matt Summers for Derek Holland and a mid level pitching or MI prospect.
  4. My 2 biggest losses were letting Harmon go to the Royals and when he passed away.
  5. I'd go multi-year and put him in the bullpen when Meyer, May and Gibson are ready. Much better than Correia.
  6. You're right, that's the highest. Actually they paid him 4/$39M in 2005, so there's your high point, 2007 - $12M before the trade. In 2008 he was scheduled to make $13.25M. When he was traded, the Mets redid his contract and he made $19M fr that season.
  7. Have the Twins ever paid more than $9M for a pitcher or $5M for a shortstop (that's another story)? I know they paid Radke $9M and Pavano $8M. I guess my point is they never paid more than $7M to a FA (Willingham). According to a Tom Powers article, don't expect TR to spend $10 or $15M on one pitcher, expect him to get 3 for that cost. In other words check the FA starters for a couple more guys who won't deserve more than $2M and give them $5M each, those will be the guys rounding out the rotation in 2013. Who does that leave? Maybe Eric Bedard, Derek Lowe, Kevin Millwood, Jamie Moyer, or Jonathan Sanchez?
  8. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the Twins would have been better off just announcing that Blackie was the next addition to the rotation. Correia is Marquis Lite and belongs in the NL. I actually believe that I have as good a shot succeeding in the rotation as a 57 year-old, overweight slob with a 48 mph fastball. That being said, I'm feeling a whiplash from all of the good feelings that TR built up with the trades of Span and Revere, to the venom now spewing on the guy. I'm sorry that TR wasted money on Correia, but if you were a major league pitcher would you want to come here right now? Every FA starter is being overpaid, there is no question about that. Unfortunately Nick, I'm afraid that if we offered Sanchez his 6/$90M request and we were the only ones to offer that much, we'd be turned down. The same goes for Jackson, Marcum or any of the other decent options out there. This contract reeks of desperation - this a warm body for the rotation for 2013, possibly the only one willing to sign here. TR is desperate to fill a rotation, but we probably would have been better off with a trade of Willingham and Morneau for another Worley type pitcher, and just turn the outfield over to the kiddie corps (Arcia, Hicks and Benson with Parmelee at 1B). Throw in the towel for 2013 and build for the future.
  9. KC has always been impatient. They keep trading away guys like Beltran and Damon, etc. Shields and Davis are pretty good, this should solidify them for 3rd place for a while, with a shot for 2nd place in the Central. MLB now rates Meyers, Odorizzi, Montgomery and Leonard as TB's #1, #2, #7 and #20 prospects, and the Rays were deep before the trade.
  10. Since the Dodgers are spending like drunken sailors, maybe they could use Morneau to DH those 10 interleague games they play on the road. Seems a value for $14M.
  11. Another victory by the Boras Agency
  12. Add to that list - Santana played 1 season at AAA after 2 seasons with the Twins in the majors; Radke never played above AA; Knoblauch never played above AA; same with Guzman and Mauer had a 5 game rehab stint only at AAA. Edit: Sorry I was typing when Physics Guy was posting.
  13. All to often during the Pohlad era have the Twins hoarded players because they may be good someday only to lose them when they run out of options and turn out to not be as good when they are closer to the big leagues. Finally TR took his greatest assets, OF - specifically CF and traded for his deficiencies. The Twins have been behind the curve with power pitchers. These trades and the last draft have finally addressed those needs. Even if our kiddie OF'ers aren't quite ready, Worley, May and Meyer give the Twins a fighting chance. There still is a long way to go, but with an infield of Parmelee, Rosario, Santana, and Sano; and an outfield of Hicks, Arcia, Kepler and Buxton not that far off, there is much hope. And defense in the infield is not as much of a problem when you have pitchers that strike out guys in bunches. Nothing's set in stone at this point, and obviously some of the prospects could be busts, but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. The Twins are finally using their assets properly.
  14. I asked this in the live Rule 5 thread but no one is reading that any more. So my question is ... Who the heck was the guy we lost in the AAA portion. I can't find him on any roster. Also is Mark Sobolewski who we picked in the AAA phase (a good defensive 3B who hit 20 HR) the addition to push Plouffe?
  15. Who the heck was the guy we lost in the AAA portion. I can't find him on any roster.
  16. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/182355221.html Latest from LEN III - Twins do seem to be shopping Revere and give a chance to Hicks in CF.
  17. Yea - with Feliz and Lewis out until at least June, maybe we better set this aside until the trade deadline, even if they sign Grienke AND Sanchez.
  18. Hermsen is a future Swarzak. Mop up guy and occasional fill-in starter for a double-header.
  19. When you and Kate go out, could you call me? I'd really like to meet her. I believe in you Dave!
  20. Money money money....money! Exactly right....F@#! Boras Nick's right - with only 7 starts at high A, Twins will start him at Ft. Meyers. He'll spend most of next season at New Britain (AA), about a half dozen games at Rochester (AAA). He'll start 2014 at Rochester and arrive in June at Target Field. We're going to suck in 2013, why waste any of the six years we're going to have him when we have no chance? And yes, we won't have him longer than six years with Boris as his agent, so start thinking who we can trade him for at the deadline in 2019. By the way, even though I'm ScottyB - don't confuse me with that ******* agent.
  21. Makes you wonder if the option years become guaranteed if he gets traded... It would still be a good contract for the Twins, just not a great one. He's still only 31 at the end of the option years. Compare that to what we paid Pavano. Holland has much more upside. Send them Revere, Morneau, $7M, and choice of Boyd, Williams or Hauser, for Holland and a prospect.
  22. Holland's contract - 2013 - $3.2M; 2014 - $5.4M; 2015 - $7.4M; 2016 - $10M; 2017 - $11M club option, $1.5M buyout; 2018 -$11.5M club option, $1M buyout. That's cheap, especially with new TV deal starting soon. He becomes the veteran to go along with Meyer, Gibson, and Diamond and maybe Berrios. Compare that to Guthrie at 3/$24M. Even if we had to pay part of Morneau's contract I'd do it.
  23. My concern is that with few exceptions (notably Mauer and Morneau), the front office's mentality is back in the 90's when Kirby Puckett got the first $3M contract. They think that an $8M contract is as high as they should go. In today's environment as we have seen, this is unrealistic. We are going to be outbid for every pitcher we bid on. To obtain pitching we are going to have to pay much more than that especially if we want shorter term contracts. If Jeremy Guthrie can get a 3/$24M contract, it's going to take more for a decent pitcher. Paying $5M for a pitcher, you're going to get what you pay for, a pitching staff much as last season. I still haven't heard anything about Carlos Villanueva anywhere and I think he could be fairly reasonable because he wants to start, not be in a bullpen. I would start him initially, and move him to the bullpen in the future,
  24. Coming into this off-season, Terry Ryan said multiple times that everyone was on the table. He's now hedging his bets on next season in an interview with Phil Mackey - in other words 'don't expect much, I'm not spending a lot of money'. As long as we're throwing away 2013, let's build for 2014 and 2015. I liked Span, I like Revere, but I'd be willing to trade him away as well as Morneau and/or Willingham, if we could get some good starters who could be here by mid-2014. If Avisail Garcia can be playing regularly for the Tigers (a contender), Hicks and Arcia should be able to play just fine on a team building for the future. It might even draw more fans. Let the clock start ticking now, because down the road we can have Buxton and Kepler. If you could move all three for pitching, I'd be willing to take our lumps with an outfield of Hicks, Arcia and Benson, with Parmelee at first. It would actually be a much stronger defensive outfield than our current option (Willingham, Revere, Parmelee). As Ryan said, everyone should be on the table.
  25. According to mlbtraderumors Jack Hannahan has a major league offer from an AL Central team. Hmm - I wonder who that can be.
