    I went over to startribune.com just to see what the comments were like. After reading about 20 or 30 (out of 650+) I couldn't stand it any more. I thank (almost) all posters here for reasoned, respectful posts.

    That process has already been underway for a while. Hence Mientkiewicz leaving the organization.

    It's easy to decide to fire a manager. What is really difficult is deciding who takes his place. This hire will be Falvey and Levine's signature move that will make or break the rest of their careers. The high pressure is on them and they know it. I am certain that this matter has been discussed and researched for many months already, and I expect that there's already a very short list.

    I don't look at this as a scapegoat move. I look at this as Falvey recognizing that Molitor is not the type of person he thinks would be the best fit for the organization he is working on establishing. I think he wants a manager who truly gets the analytical and strategic aspects of the game, not one like Molitor who is only willing to go along with it for the sake of filling the position.

    IMHO, anyone who is serious about a career in ANY phase of baseball should have strong Spanish skills.

    But Pujols didn't catch. The fact that Mauer was one of the best catchers in the game outweighs any of Pujols' superiority on offense. IMHO, of course.

    For a few years Mauer was the best baseball player in the world, and that includes Albert Pujols when he was at or near his prime. That, to me, makes him HOF-worthy.

    We need four outfielders with five to choose from: Buxton, Cave, Grossman, Kepler, and Rosario. I believe Buxton will be put on the roster and I think he's going to have a breakout year. It's just going to happen. Rosario obviously will be there. That leaves two of Cave, Kepler, and Grossman. Despite Grossman's deficiencies as a fielder it appears he can be relied on to get on base and he switch hits. As of now, I'd certainly keep Cave over Kepler for the last spot.

    And while doing all that indirectly injure an opposing player to boot.

    When you're playing a team that is still contending for a postseason berth you have to manage to win. Auditions resume tomorrow.

    Players have to undergo physicals for a trade to go through. If the arm is a time bomb the other team's doctors will also find that out and the trade would be nixed.

    Sorry, but I think this statement is out of line unless you have all the medical information and knowledge needed to know what is necessary and what is unnecessary. We need Heezy to chime in.

    That's true to some extent, but no organization has a AAA team with a roster full of major-league-ready players. First of all, there just aren't enough players of that caliber in existence. And, among other things, that's what the rule 5 draft is all about.

    I didn't watch any of either opener games, but here's what I like about it in the Twins' current situation. As is true with most teams at this time of year, we are in fall training. Out of fairness to the game, teams need to try to win when facing an opponent that is in the running for the postseason. But the rest of the games should be devoted to player development. When it comes to pitchers, it's a lot like spring training. The decision about who pitches should be made in large part based on whom the manager, coaches, and front office want to evaluate and prepare for the future. That means shorter appearances by some pitchers so that others get a chance to get in to games.

    The fielder has to control the ball, but it's the umpire's discretion whether the ball is controlled.

    Dude is only 23 years old. Waaaay too early to be writing him off.

    It's a fine line. The last run he gave up was not due to bad pitching but if he stays in the game and gives up 3-4 more hits it would be counterproductive to his confidence.

    Thank you, Heezy. It's always interesting to read information presented by a true expert as opposed to the inexpert guesses that we often see on sites such as this.

    I don't think he was rushed. Keep in mind he had played 4 years of D-I college ball and had success in high A and AA that first summer.

    Gibson played 4 years in D-I college ball, whereas Stewart turned pro right after high school. That's why Gibson played very little in the low minors. Apples to oranges.

    Forsythe had a 9-game (now 10-game) hitting streak so I don't think batting him leadoff was a bad idea.

    The second sentence of this post is the crux of the matter. Even though it's early August we are in fall training mode. Evaluate the youngsters because we already know what we have in the veterans. Yes, we need to send our best players to the field when we are facing teams with postseason aspirations but we have a lot of games left against the Tigers, Royals and Whities (plus one series vs Texas) in which to give our prospects in the upper minors a tryout in the bigs.
