  1. Clearly he doesn't solve the #1 starter question. He also is not right-handed. But, bottom line is instead of running out a Vargas/Grossman platoon at DH most days, they're sending out a guy who hit 38 bombs last year. Does he address their biggest weakness? Of course not. Does he make their lineup better? Absolutely.
  2. The visit rule is ridiculous. If they really want to speed up the game, call the strike zone where it's defined in the rule book. MLB won't do that b/c home runs and runs are more interesting. To limit visits, give the coaching staff two mound visits and then every visit after that you have to change pitchers. That in itself would cut down several minutes worth of pitching coach visits just to let a bullpen arm warm up. And then put a limit on catchers' visits to 1 or 2 per inning. Just eliminate visits from infielders. Do those things and you cut 15 minutes off a game time.
  3. Any chance they could trade Vargas for Chargois, Burdi or Rosario?!...lol
  4. Agree 100%. But my knowledge of MLB pitching is not up to par with Falvey, so I guess we have to trust him and Lavine.
  5. I would say Burdi and Chargois. Such promise that got derailed by injuries. Most of these guys have one thing in common...at age 26ish, players should be entering their prime, not still fighting for a 40-man spot. We'll probably hear some of these names in the future...and we'll say "THAT's where _________ is now?"
  6. With all of the additions, it's great to see such depth in the bullpen...Busenitz, Curtiss and Moya all got outs for them last year during a playoff push...and in the rotation...May, Gonsalves, Romero, Littell?, a yet-to-be-signed-FA?
  7. It will be interesting to see what they do with Trevor May. Usually injuries tend to make those decisions for you. Also, they only need a #5 starter 3-4 times before Erv comes back, so can we assume that Hughes may get used in the pen as well in this scenario?
  8. The more I read about this kid, the more this "old school" baseball guy likes him. Assuming good health and natural progression, Falvine seems to have hit a home run on him...and got better value with other picks b/c they took him.
  9. True. Looking more like a top-end #2 to me. Maybe that's Romero's ceiling as well? Hosken Powell...Bombo Rivera...and Disco Danny Ford. Love the '70's!
  10. He's only 23 and only 215. I wonder if as he grows and matures a little more he'll be able to add a tick or two to that 91-94 fastball. 93-95 would sound a lot better. Gonsalves profiles as what us old guys refer to as "a pitcher" as opposed to a thrower.
  11. The Twins really have only one realistic chance of getting an ace in the next 3 years...his name is Fernando Romero. Even Chris Archer is not a true "ace". He's a #1, but not an ace. With that being the case, you then need to have a solid and deep rotation. Since there clearly is no way of getting a true #1, guys like Lynn, Cobb, etc., become more valuable......as long as the price reflects their true status as #3 type starters. Either one deepens the rotation.
  12. Patience will be key...esp coming off TJ surgery. But this kid has all the physical makings of a stud. Has that prototypical LH power swing.
  13. Kind of an uninspiring group from 11-15. These kinds of lists also still reflect the relative youth of the big league lineup, which brings guys slightly further up a ranking than they would otherwise be. But it's baseball, so you know at least one of these guys will develop into a solid big leaguer. Diaz and Thorpe certainly appear to have precious "upside" at least.
  14. Top RH hitting OF left in FA include: Bautista, Gomez, Rajai Davis, Cameron Maybin, Jayson Werth, Chris Young. As a 4th OF, I'd prefer Davis or Maybin b/c of speed and defense. Guess it depends if you want a RH DH or a RH 4th OF.
  15. Well, I've certainly seem worse Twins benches. I don't want Bautista. He's a clubhouse cancer and a me-first player. I would question the Gomez fit as well. I don't know if the Twins have strong enough leadership to keep either of them in their place. Escobar will play 3rd WHEN Sano gets suspended (idiot), leaving Adrianza as the utility IF. They cannot count on him to play OF then and Grossman is not a plus defender. The Twins lost some great leadership in Chris Giminez. So....I'd love to see them bring in a veteran 4th OF/RH bat that can fill some of that. Is there a guy like Gomez that is a team-first guy? And, for heaven's sake, sign Dozier to an extension. He IS the leader of this team....oh, and he's a pretty decent player too!!...lol
  16. Darvish wants to go to LA or NY. LA and NY don't want to spend over the luxury threshold because of the luxury tax. There's your slow pitching market. If they stay under it this year and then go over it next year when guys like Harper and Kershaw are available, I believe tax is lower. Darvish will be the first pitching domino to fall. To be honest, guys like Cobb, Lynn, etc., are not worth what they'll get or at least what they're trying to get. Being the 2nd best pitcher in a weak FA market doesn't mean you get big money. For position players, advanced metrics are telling us what any baseball fan with some common sense knew all along...guys who hit 35 HR and drive in 100 runs really aren't helping their team all that much if they can't get on base any other way and are a liability on defense. Those same metrics say guys like JD Martinez are not as valuable as once thought. Similar situation to pitchers. B/c Moustakas is the best 3B available doesn't mean he should get what Manny Machado will get next year. To me, that kind of sums up this whole freeze on FA. FO are just getting smarter with how they spend. Last, I have a real hard time having sympathy for players like Hosmer who turn down a 7-year offer for an obscene amount of money (even if we don't know the exact numbers, no matter what the offer is it's an obscene amount of money). I make $45k working my tail off in a profession that actually makes a difference in this world - teaching. These guys are pampered athletes who won't sign for "only" 15million a year or for "only 5 years". Give me a break.
  17. Hate to see Tyler Jay dropping like that, injury and all. Drafted to be a starter, they really need him to at least be a good reliever. Really never understood the gamble with I believe was the 6th overall pick, hoping he could develop into a starter when he'd never done it.
  18. If Mejia ends up being a solid #5 starter then they got good value for Nunez in the trade. Anything more than that would be the icing on the cake.
  19. Finally, an article on here that completely sums up what I've been thinking and saying. This FO has it's sights squarely on 2019 while still competing for the playoffs this year. And I am all in. So many questions still to be answered...does Sano stay at 3rd? Does Dozier stay with the Twins (I hope so)? Is Garver a quality #2 catcher? Is Polanco really the answer at SS? Will Kepler take the next step? The bullpen now appears to be solid. Other than Yu Darvish, I'm not convinced that the other names listed here will be any better (or even as good?) as Romero, Gonsalves, Trevor May....heck, Kyle Gibson. I'm all for increasing their depth with another starter who has had success in the AL, b/c we all know NL numbers don't translate to the AL. In my opinion, they need to be patient and answer these questions before deciding what and/or who they need to invest a multiple-year contract in.
  20. And I feel like those two moves would not affect the natural flow of the game....hitters stepping out, pitchers stepping off, etc.. Cut 25 minutes off game times would help...except for the beer vendors...lol
  21. I see two very feasible ways to speed up games. 1) Limit catchers' trips to the mound. 2) Use the in-game commercials like FOX does for NFL games. There are 17 breaks between half innings. Cut a minute off each by limiting commercial time. These two things would immediately cut 20+ minutes off each game time.
  22. Unless the Twins work out a trade, I just can't see how Kinley sticks. Best case, they work out a trade for Kinley and get Burdi and Bard returned to them.
  23. Yeah. Whatever the cutoff date is, I just think it might be a good way to go with those couple of young guys. The AAA experience would be good for them.
  24. I'm always leary of guys who've had the majority (or all) of their success in the NL. Call it the Matt Capps syndrome. So I'm leary of Arrieta and Lynn. I want Darvish. Take a 2-0 count swing. Cobb at 29 with all success in AL is more appealing to me than Arrieta at 31 with all of success in NL.
  25. I may be alone, but I like the idea of stashing Gonsalves and Romero at AAA until June 1....the old Jose Berrios move, to save a year of service. Let the kids develop there for 2-3 months against AAA hitters and bring them up when the first injury happens. Rotation can be Santana, Berrios, Gibson, Mejia and FA to start the season. Ideally, both Gonsalves and Romero are ready to rock when the Twins start their targeted season...2019.
