    The Padres have a glut of talented infielders and their situation only grew more complicated with the signing of Xander Boegarts earlier in the offseason. Unsurprisingly, reports are now emerging that they're taking calls on young shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. The return on Kim would likely be significant. He's 27 years old and under team control through the 2026 season. In only 267 games played, Kim has accumulated 7.1 bWAR, including 5.1 in 2022 alone. Kim was a standout player in the KBO (Korean Baseball Organization), where he played nearly 900 games while posting an .866 OPS. The Padres signed him out of the KBO only two years ago and it's not a stretch to suggest he may not be happy with a bench role given his MLB production thus far. What would it take to trade for Kim?

    There weren't many/any "good" contracts handed out this offseason. But those are the realities of free agency and if a team is going to improve, they need to play in the same water as everyone else. Just pretending the baseball landscape didn't change is the one thing the Twins absolutely cannot do and that's exactly what they did this offseason.

    Okay, I'm not piling on Dan here, I love his work and you should subscribe to The Athletic. In a piece this morning, he quoted some Twins management and sources about what they plan to do in the wake of Correa going to the Giants. And a lot of it is rational, useful information. But holy Moses did this quote stick in my craw: *uncontrollable gagging* I mean, what? This is the team that traded Gio Urshela earlier this offseason. Justin Turner is a fine player, I guess, but he's the only name on that list that doesn't make me reel in horror. My suggestion to Twins officials: if those are the names you're going to mention, don't mention any names. Anyway, go read the piece, there's interesting information contained within that didn't make me dizzy and nauseous.

    Cool cool, this just means the five of us can get extra drunk at dinner the night before.

    Excellent post, Ash. And what you outlined here is why I've stayed well clear of "the Twins were played" or other implications of them being, well, stupid in some way. In the words of LMM... I believe they mis-read the market but I think a lot of baseball mis-read the market going into November. But once the market solidified, the Twins remained (as you put it) rigid instead of adapting. Whether that meant offering Correa more money or pivoting while it was possible to acquire a Willson Contreras and/or a Chris Bassitt, I don't really care that much. That's where the discipline Jack mentioned comes into play; choosing to bow out of the Correa market or pay the requisite amount to have him seriously consider Minnesota. Either decision is a fine one, but the decision must be made. But the worst possible outcome is the one they find themselves right now. It's basically "Dansby Swanson or bust" and given the lack of options remaining, it's probably more accurately stated as "way overpay Dansby Swanson relative to his career performance or bust".

    That wouldn't surprise me, either. And I was never that particularly high on Rodon so I'm not gnashing my teeth over it. I was open to the Twins signing him but given his injury, he scares the hell out of me.

    That's really not an unreasonable amount for Rodon. That's the kind of deal the Twins could have easily signed.
