  1. I feel similarly. If Mauer can nudge his K rate back toward 10%, he probably has a handful of good seasons left in him.
  2. I haven't read the novels but I've read hundreds of Claremont comics. Claremont is the king of "WTF". He basically broke the X-universe for Marvel to the point where it's entirely incomprehensible. Not just a little confusing... Completely ****ing incomprehensible.
  3. They had very different career arcs. Lucas was much more of a "serious" filmmaker when he broke onto the scene; his first film was the critically-applauded and audience-ignored THX-1138. He went on to create American Graffiti, which gave him enough publicity to delve into his "real" passion... Schlocky, action-oriented fare that harkened back to the Saturday morning serials he watched as a child. I'd argue the merchandising was a byproduct of the films he wanted to create, not the other way around. Unfortunately, at some point along the way he lost touch with what made those schlocky, action-oriented films fun for audiences.
  4. I definitely have concerns about Murphy and really, I'll be thrilled if he's league average. Bonus points for anything better than that. The Twins gave up Aaron Hicks, an enigmatic but talented player to get this guy. If Murphy busts and Hicks flourishes in New York, that's a pretty damning indictment of the Twins' scouting and analytics system. If he succeeds, that's a pretty solid endorsement.
  5. Frankly, the Director's Guild was being a collective group of asshats over the situation. Lucas refused to add the director's name to the beginning of the films because he wanted the opening text and crawl to remain intact to preserve the mythological feel of the franchise. Notice how the director name still didn't appear in Episode VII. Nobody seemed to care once the word "Disney" entered the discussion. And really, I think George started to lose touch when he divorced his wife Martha, who was one hell of a film editor and one of the few people on earth who could ground George and tell him "no, George, this is a terrible idea". It happens to creators all the time when fame and fortune begins to cloud their judgment. Their peers slowly drift away and the replacements don't have the power, influence, or stature to challenge the person because they're not peers, they're underlings. ****, look what Jackson did to The Hobbit. He created the greatest set of fantasy movies in history and then took a Cleveland Steamer all over The Hobbit a decade later. It doesn't mean LotR is somehow diminished because he created bad films later, nor does it mean Jackson was lucky or less capable while filming the original trilogy.
  6. Same here, for the same reasons. I think they'll win 90 again.
  7. Under. I think they jettison pieces in July and finish the season in full rebuild.
  8. Under. One injury to Trout and they might struggle to win 70.
  9. Sure, a hitter might see a small bump in BABIP from Yankee Stadium (and many hitters might see a small BABIP bump from the friendly confines of a home park) but not to the tune of 120 points. Maybe 5, 10, even 20 points. Not 120. That's just noise. No hitter can do that on a regular basis. Even David Ortiz, a guy who exploits the oddities of the Monster as well as anyone, has a BABIP only 60 points higher at home than the road. And Yankee Stadium doesn't have a feature as obvious or as easy to exploit as the Monster. Nothing close to it. No other team has a home stadium with anything as weird as the Monster.
  10. Well, it's not... Unless you're arguing that JR Murphy has figured out a way to exploit a weakness and do things much more talented players can't seem to work out on their own.
  11. The guy created the two largest film franchises in history at the time of their creation. That doesn't happen through dumb luck. I don't understand the internet's burning need to **** all over George Lucas because he got old and lost touch. It happens. Tip your cap to what he did right and get on with the day.
  12. Data noise, nothing more. Yankee Stadium isn't some BABIP haven.
  13. He doesn't hit home runs so I'm not sure what Yankee Stadium has to do with anything. But the BABIP is a concern.
  14. I have two or three episodes left in season two. It's better than season one, I think. The Punisher does a good job of reflecting Murdock's vigilantism, which offsets the loss of scene-chewing D'Onofrio from season one. Add in Elektra and there are multiple pieces in play at any moment. It's hard to juggle so many engaging storylines but they're doing a very good job of it. I still think Jessica Jones is the best of the bunch, though. I wish they weren't making season two... I suspect we'll see a True Detective scenario with the show; there's no way the creators can replicate season one so it's probably best they hang it up while they're way ahead and move onto another project. Man, I still don't like Karen Page. I understand her importance from the comics but every time she's on screen with Murdock, I just groan. She's a lot more interesting when she's out on her own, though. I wish we saw less Karen Page and more Claire Temple. Karen is the least interesting character on the show - and it's not a close competition, IMO - and she gets the second- or third-most screen time.
  15. Watched the first two episodes. Bernthal is perfect in the role. A giant douche playing a giant douche. Seriously, though... It appears they're really doing the Punisher right in this series.
  16. I dislike Bernthal and I dislike The Punisher. Seems like a good fit to me.
  17. Heh, Hughes, actually. But the same applies to Perkins. I don't think it matters with Nolasco.
  18. It makes sense, as DD is Marvel's marquee "street level" hero. He was Marvel's first real counter to Batman, who was basically a play off The Shadow. They're also three of my all-time favorite fictional characters.
  19. I suspect they'll wait a few weeks, maybe even a month or two. DD and Netflix have all the hype they need right now and season three is virtually a lock; they may as well wait until the news and hype die down so any season three announcement gets significant press.
  20. Yep. While I'm not concerned right now, if he's throwing 90-92 in early April, that's a big problem going forward. He needs to sit at 93-94 to come anywhere close to replicating his 2014 season.
  21. Yeah, I doubt he comes north but damn, he has looked good this spring. Yeah, yeah, I know... Spring Training SSS and all that but the guy has done everything he can do to force himself onto the roster.
  22. If anyone wants to talk DD season two, be sure to create a spoiler thread. I'm going to take my time watching it so I don't want anything spoiled.
  23. "If Nolasco makes the rotation I will...." Finally admit my practices in voodoo black arts are ineffective.
