  1. It's a decision we make based on not only what's good for the site but also what we *want* to read. There's a forum thread that was titled "the bullpen sucks". We changed the name but the content is still there. Unhappiness is fine but bitching and moaning about every pitch, at-bat, and in-game move is boring and frankly, it's Internet masturbation. The only person receiving gratification from the post is the poster. It's that simple.
  2. I totally get why everybody on the Twins loves Rosario. The kid is a straight-up gamer. I just wish he was slightly better at hitting a baseball... Or maybe more accurately, not swinging at a baseball.
  3. Sitting Sano and/or Buxton for a game if you feel they need to get their head straight isn't the worst idea ever presented. Both have looked lost, giving them a day to reflect could help them. But not as punishment.
  4. I would have also put Tonkin on the roster, at least for 4-6 weeks. Fien... Uh... No. Not so much.
  5. Or you can reel it back a bit. Did you read the second post of this thread?
  6. Cut him some slack. This is his first baseball game in 874 days.
  7. All too well.
  8. This "long man" argument is nonsense. May has two appearances. He pitched the seventh and eighth innings in both appearances. It's blatantly obvious this is how Molitor views the bullpen, top to bottom: Perkins, Jepsen, May, those other guys. You know. Just. Like. Last. Year.
  9. Yeah, if anything, why wouldn't Molitor use May for two innings in close games? He's a former starter who can easily go two innings and he's probably the best guy in the bullpen. I'd want that guy to go an extra inning as often as possible, too.
  10. It's certainly fair to criticize May's demotion but I don't think any harm has been done by "jerking" him around. Adam Wainwright made zero relief appearances in the St Louis farm system. In 2006, Adam Wainwright made only relief appearances for the Cardinals. From 2007-2014, Adam Wainwright made zero relief appearances for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright seemed to do just fine for himself. As long as May is on the MLB team and helping the team win, he's learning something. Could he learn more from starting and bring greater value to the team in the long run? Yeah, I think so... But I'm not terribly concerned about the team jerking him around. May seems to have a good head on his shoulders and he's getting half a million dollars to play baseball. Is he mildly irritated he isn't in the rotation? Yeah, probably, any good athlete has an ego... But I doubt he lets it bother him too much. He has a job to do and he seems to relish in doing it, as evidenced by his increased velocity and strikeout rate as a reliever.
  11. I just came across this odd fact... The Padres' all-time home run champ is Nate Colbert with 163 homers. That's... Holy good god almighty, that's friggin' pathetic. The Padres joined MLB in 1969. This is their 47th season. Even the Marlins and Rays have guys with career numbers higher than that.
  12. Disclaimer: game threads are meant to be light and fun enjoyment of the game. If you're going to complain about every move made by Molitor, Ryan, or even TC the Bear, do not be surprised if a moderator asks you to tone it down and/or leave the thread if you keep it up. We all make fun of the team and/or complain but if that's all you're going to do, reconsider why you're posting in the thread at all. This is entirely at moderator discretion and consistency will be applied when and where we feel like it.
  13. I wasn't clear. I feel the lack of a LHRP acquisition was the most egregious mistake of the offseason. In my earlier post, I was speaking specifically about righties but didn't clarify that point. Jepsen and May as your go-to guys with a mix of Pressly, Tonkin, and another non-Fien pitcher isn't ridiculous. No, it probably won't be great but I don't think the Twins pen will be great until the kids arrive in force. I can at least acknowledge the thinking that led to internal options filling the right-handed side of the pen.
  14. Even if they had Fien on the roster but only as a fourth option, that's one thing. But the guy has two appearances while Tonkin hasn't appeared in a game.
  15. Yeah, I would have preferred to see them pick up an arm but I also don't think it's lunacy to expect Pressly or Burdi or Meyer or Duffey or somebody to step up and fill the role early in the season. But, again, why is Casey Fien even here? Tonkin, yeah, okay... You give that guy one more shot. But not both of them.
  16. Santana batting second: Yes, god yes. The guy had a OPS+ of 44 last season. ARGHBLARGH I believe retaining Santana was the right move but he's not a go-to guy in crunch time. He needs to prove he deserves to even be in the lineup before he gets critical plate appearances in a close game, especially when you've relegated Oswaldo Arcia to water boy. Jepsen over May: Agreed. May will probably turn out to be the better reliever but those two positions can be swapped at any time with no effort. Jepsen was a good eighth inning guy last season. It makes sense for him to be the eighth inning guy to start the season but if he falters a couple more times in his next few appearances, Molitor shouldn't hesitate to put May in the eighth.
  17. Seth and I were talking about this last night. The format is going to change but we're not quite sure how it's going to change yet.
  18. Hey Seth, this has been a common problem for Stewart since he was drafted. Do you blame his velocity issues entirely on bad mechanics or do you think Stewart's diabetes plays a role? Is it possible he simply gets worn out during some starts and can't really "bring it"? Though, obviously, that doesn't explain the inning-by-inning velocity problem... At least not to my satisfaction.
  19. Someone mentioned mid-May to me a few days ago. No idea if that is accurate or not. Don't expect much from him this season. He'll pitch few innings, his breaking stuff will probably be crap (a common short-term problem during TJ recovery), and he may or may not have his mid-90s velocity back right off the bat. What I'd watch for early in the season is how many innings he pitches, whether his fastball looks okay, and then later, whether his velocity and control begin to return. A great recovery is that he finishes August with dominating strikeout numbers again. A more likely recovery is that he finishes August with "okay" numbers but continues to look better as the season progresses. As for innings pitched, I'd be surprised if he gets to 100 this season.
  20. No arguments here. I gave Molitor a pass on his weird pinch-running fetish the first time but it's quickly becoming old hat. Arcia sits on the bench while Santana gets PAs and pinch-running appearances. It's so nonsensical I can't even begin to understand the thinking behind it.
  21. Because we've yet to see if it's a real problem. The two big bullpen failures in the past four games have come from the two best relievers in the bullpen (non-closer edition). Even if the Twins had other options in those situations, Molitor still would have put May and Jepsen out there on their respective nights. Because, again, we're four games into the season. He's going to go with the hands he trusted from last season just like every other MLB manager to ever sit in a dugout. Now if May and/or Jepsen implode and the Twins have no one to back up them up - a real concern - then this roster construction issue becomes a big deal. But as of right now, it means your two best relievers each had a bad night. Okay, get back up and walk it off. Can't judge a reliever by two innings of baseball. edit: I was mistaken, I thought May gave up a run in his first appearance. That was also Jepsen. So Jepsen has been kinda bad over two appearances. The point still applies.
  22. Well said all around. The Twins' BaseRuns record is 2-2. For all intents and purposes, everyone has done an okay job with the bases empty and a horrible job with the bases occupied. And that won't hold up forever.
  23. Well, it makes sense he didn't appear in Baltimore, as their closer is left handed. But last night? Eh... Maybe not so much.
  24. To me, the biggest mistakes of last night were Rosario trying to go big with that catch, allowing the go-ahead run to stop at third, and the absolutely horrific, terrible Santana plate appearance. I had to turn off the TV after the Santana plate appearance. Davis was struggling with control and Santana handed away that AB for no good reason. Also, Oswaldo Arcia.
