  1. Yeah, Cottonmouth was a great foil to Luke. I don't understand why they felt the need to move on from that kind of street-level conflict, which put Harlem at the front and center of the series. I also agree that Seagate has some pretty cool potential in the future. I like almost all of the decisions made by the showrunners except for Diamondback. My indifference toward him is half character, half actor. He's crazy in a pretty mundane and illogical way, which isn't helped by the actor's portrayal, which is too heavy on schlocky intensity. Everything seems off and a bit forced with his story. On the other hand, Cottonmouth had a complex and believable backstory and the actor absolutely nailed the character with little touches such as random, uncontrolled bursts of laughter. The audience wanted to like Cottonmouth and that feeling was reinforced with his sympathetic backstory of manipulation. On the other hand, Diamondback is completely unrelatable. I don't feel any connection with the character, all I find myself thinking is how much I'd rather see Cottonmouth whenever Diamondback is on-screen. It sucks to see a show launch with such a solid concept and then drop it just as the story and characters feel like they're really getting rolling, doubly so if the replacement is meh. Oh, and I think Shades deserves a shout-out for developing into a compelling character, even if he's only there to spur other characters into action. He's the anti-Diamondback; a templated character that is propped up by the actor's consistent performance and general likability.
  2. Attempt to Trade: Dozier Santana Attempt to Move by Any Means: Plouffe He's Not Going Anywhere so Even Talking About it is Pointless: Mauer
  3. Would it cut Dozier's trade value? Probably not, though it would be questioned why the Twins moved a stellar middle infielder to an offense-first position. It may or may not taint negotiations. But mostly, such a move would be pointless. It has no upside and the downside can be argued, which means it's probably a bad idea.
  4. A guy who plays a middle infield position at an acceptable clip while mashing the ball isn't going to see his trade value increase by moving him to an offense-first position where his numbers aren't as extraordinary in comparison to other players in the league. Desmond's value didn't increase because he could play multiple positions, his value increased because he started hitting the ball again, something he hadn't done at a well-above average level in three years. Besides, Desmond's value is very questionable right now. After moving to Texas (a hitting haven) and starting off the season in beast mode, he was several shades of terrible in the second half of the season. All in all, it's unlikely Desmond has moved the needle much on his value. Sure, he'll probably get a decent 2-3 year contract somewhere but it won't be for big money and he won't be highly sought-after this offseason.
  5. Oh, definitely. It's not as if Romney was able to distance himself from some of the more radical primary statements once he won the nomination. He was fighting tepid support from the base throughout the campaign, which forced him to continue swinging way right of his regular positions, the positions that made him a moderately popular Republican in one of the bluest states in the country.
  6. Yeah. The sad thing about Romney is that I believe he'd be a competent president. Unfortunately, to make it through the primaries he had to turn into Bizarro Romney to placate the base. It's a fundamental problem with the GOP right now. Only crazy people or people pretending to be crazy can make it to a general election.
  7. Ten episodes in and I see what you all mean about the second half of the series. Cottonmouth >>>>>>>>>>>> Diamondback Meh on Diamondback. He's completely flat. Cottonmouth is great. Love the character.
  8. FiveThirtyEight now has Clinton at 83.6%. Will it hit 90% at some point before the election?
  9. He might run but I don't think he'll have even a fraction of the momentum he had this time around. In 2020, expect the GOP to get out well in front of this issue and smash Trump before he even gets going. The way this election is shaking out, they can't afford to have him do this to the party again.
  10. Yep, it was reported today Paul Ryan is ceasing any and all campaigning/commenting on Donald Trump. The most powerful Republican in the country just backed away from his own presidential candidate. He didn't pull support but made it clear he's washing his hands of this campaign and focusing on down-ballot races.
  11. Oh, I think that part was entirely intentional. Clinton is trying to show she's a serious candidate with real policy ideas because, let's be honest, she doesn't have to try very hard right now. Trump blasts Clinton and paces around, Hillary responds by talking about policy. Is that boring? Hell yes. Is it going to help sway undecided voters to her camp simply because she doesn't appear to be a lunatic? Hell yes. The fact is that Clinton would probably lose this thing if the GOP had bothered to offer up a real, reasonable candidate. There's a good chance 2012 Mitt Romney beats her in a general. Clinton is weak in so many spots: her open borders comments, the two-faced comments aspect of the recent Wikileaks, her email server, etc. There are a dozen soft spots for a competent candidate to drill down on her. Trump is not a competent candidate. All Clinton really needs to do is stay on topic and occasionally rile up Trump with a barb. He'll take care of the rest for her. On every topic Trump "won" last night, he only won with his base. He's not pulling in new people while reluctant voters/allies are bailing off his ship on a daily basis. His strategy is a losing one because, frankly, I don't think he's very bright. He's doubling- and tripling-down on voters he won eight months ago while alienating almost everyone else in the process.
  12. Yeah, I was thinking a response linking him to Putin would have been the kind of public embarrassment that Trump deserves, a "you're no Jack Kennedy" moment.
  13. Trump had his moments but he made three huge mistakes: 1. The opening statement about his "locker room" comments were hollow and got him off to just about as bad a start as possible. 2. He threw his running mate under the bus in front of a national audience. Remember that many evangelicals are only supporting Trump because of his choice of running mate. 3. The entire Syria segment was laughable. His answer was off topic, largely incoherent, and Raddatz put a big ol' spotlight on it by flatly repeating the question. The entire audience laughed because it was such a spot-on moment. 4. Clinton is a pro, Trump is not. She moved around the stage, engaging audience members, always keeping Donald in the camera frame. It showed professional, serious woman in the foreground and a restless, anxious man in the background, especially when he kept brushing the mic against his pant leg and disrupting Clinton's statements. The debate isn't as much about what happens on stage as it is what the media and the candidates do with it afterward. I didn't see Trump walk into any new traps but he gave Clinton plenty of fodder for the next week of airtime.
  14. This was a ****show on a new level, IMO. The Good: - The moderators put the screws to the candidates, especially Trump. Raddatz repeating the question about Syria was pure gold. The Bad: - Trump throwing Pence under the bus in front of a national audience. The Ugly: - Trump threatening to put Clinton in jail. I don't understand how this isn't a bigger headline in early articles. That's embarrassing. - Clinton's rebuttal to the jail comment was weak as ****. Trump opened the door for her to make him look really bad with a "Well, Donald, I promise not to try to put you in jail because I don't seek revenge on those with whom I disagree" comment.
  15. Trump seemed coherent for awhile but my god, he jumped on his sword during the Syria segment.
  16. I stopped watching Luke Cage right at its low point, episode three. I picked back up today and was right back into it. Really enjoying the show again as the plot starts weaving around a bit.
  17. Well said, Chief. Eight years ago I said one of the best things that could happen to the country is for the Republican Party to implode and be forced to rebuild anew under more temperate leadership. Well, it appears we're nearly halfway there.
  18. Unless Clinton drops dead in the next four weeks, she will win this thing. I can't remember seeing a campaign fall apart as Trump's has in the past four weeks. This thing is over unless something truly crazy happens. And Trump cannot be replaced. That's a pipe dream. He is the GOP candidate.
  19. I make a concentrated effort to not revel in the misfortune of others but I'm waiving that rule for the next month.
  20. This is what happens when someone isn't vetted in a typical governor/senator way before making a run at the big chair. He continues to wilt as the lights get brighter.
  21. Well, no one will get it right 100% of the time, which is why it's important to play the odds and be ready for blowback from the peanut gallery when you break tradition and things go awry.
  22. FiveThirtyEight now has Clinton at 79.3%. Does she pass 80% before the debate?
  23. My wife loves that show. I found it pretty amusing but not really my thing so I drifted off and stopped watching.
  24. http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-election-forecast/?ex_cid=2016-forecast Crazy. FiveThirtyEight now has Clinton at 78.8% and the blue/red divide has moved all the way to Iowa/Arizona, with Clinton showing an advantage in every major swing state.
  25. While we definitely need to see more of Buxton before we can declare he has fully turned the corner, it should be acknowledged the guy only has 469 career PAs. That's not even 3/4 of a full season. And in his final 113 PAs - or roughly 25% of his overall career line - he has posted a 1.011 OPS. So if we were sliding his potential ceiling way down - as many were - after 350 career PAs, we should be sliding that ceiling back up again after 113 PAs. Not only were those 113 PAs 25% of his overall line but they were the most recent 25% to boot.
