  1. There are many pitchers in baseball history whose stuff didn't play as a starter but thrived in the bullpen. The last, oh, 17 Twins closers fit that profile, actually. I don't see any reason to completely give up on Gibson right now. The Twins roster simply isn't very good. Demote him to the pen or Rochester, sure, but don't discard him entirely because there are few pitchers behind him who look better.
  2. Yep. I'm not looking for Rosario to walk 10% of the time or lay off every pitch out of the zone, I'm simply looking for him to lay off the worst 4-5% of pitches thrown to him. He's a bad ball hitter. That's okay, lots of players have had long, successful careers that way... But Eddie needs to lay off the unhittable pitches more often. And he's done that this season.
  3. Sure, if you glance at his counting stats and call it a day. Rosario is making more contact all around. He's swinging at fewer pitches outside the zone, making contact with more pitches outside the zone when he does swing, and missing fewer pitches in the zone. As a result, he's walking more and striking out less. He's doing everything we've wanted him to do, the problem right now is that he's hamstrung by a BABIP a full 100 points lower than his pre-2017 numbers.
  4. Definitely, though I'm not sure it'd be my first choice.
  5. It wouldn't be easy. No implosions, less hard contact. It'd have to be a judgment call (and would be based on the rest of the pitching staff not imploding more spectacularly than Kyle).
  6. I'd consider that but I worry about breaking down Duffey over the course of a season. It's not as if the Twins have a plethora of young-ish arms who miss bats in the pen.
  7. Probably Tonkin though I'd like to bump two people off the pitching staff and replace them with Berrios. Though I'm not sure who the second person would be right now.
  8. At this point, I don't want to see Duffey go multiple innings. Maybe 1.1 or 1.2 when needed but he needs to be a 7th/8th inning guy if he keeps doing what he has been doing.
  9. Okay, tone it down. Do not make responses about the poster, make them about the topic at hand.
  10. While I expect the roster to stay pretty static through May 1st, let's just say I won't cry any rivers if a change was made five minutes ago.
  11. I'd give Kyle two more starts and then think long and hard about what to do with him (I'd probably put him in mop-up and rotate Haley into a shorter but still relatively low pressure role).
  12. With Hughes somehow turning into a right-handed Jamie Moyer, I think Gibson has to be the guy who's on the chopping block. If things hold steady, this is what I'd consider doing on May 1st: 1. Cut Tonkin 2. Call up Berrios to replace Gibson 3. Rotate Haley to a sixth inning role 4. Put Gibson in mop-up 5. Cut Santana 6. Promote Vargas An alternate version is to cut two bullpen guys to get the pitching staff down to 12 but I just don't know who to cut right now. They all look okay.
  13. Yeah, the Gonsalves and Stewart issues are mildly frustrating but they're not next in line for a promotion anyway. That's (obviously) Jose Berrios, who is friggin' killing it in Rochester (again).
  14. I'm not ready to pull the plug on Gibson quite yet but he has frustrated me more than any player on the 2017 Twins. Yes, even more than Danny Santana. I can barely watch a Gibson start without going into rage mode, which tells me I'm having a hard time viewing him objectively.
  15. Maybe Rosario's changes won't improve his overall offense but I need to see a normalized BABIP before I can make that call. Mejia looked adequate in his last turn. We'll see how that progresses. Duffey has looked pretty good in the bullpen, as has Haley. There are bright spots up and down the roster. Maybe not as many as we'd like but there's certainly reason for hope. Start adding up those players and we're looking at a roster that has around ten guys, age 28 or under, who are at least holding their own.
  16. I think it's important to remember that the Homage King, JJ Abrams, is not directing or writing Episode VIII. Homage is fine and dandy at times but Abrams took it a step too far with TFA. I think he couldn't get past his own fandom and it hurt the film (which was still quite good but the third act felt tired). There's no reason to think Rian Johnson is going to take the same approach to The Last Jedi. And the trailer tells us nothing, as the trailers for the middle part of a trilogy are often intentionally misleading. For all we know, Johnson is intentionally leading us down the wrong path (for example, he cut TLJ trailer to match TFA trailer almost scene-for-scene). It's quite possible we're being trolled. I have no idea what to expect from the film, really.
  17. Santana has all of 15 PAs on the season. He's not exactly killing the team. I don't even mind Santana being on the roster if the Twins carry a 12 man pitching staff. It's not the decision I'd make but I simply can't get too worked up about one back of the bench player. But Santana and a 13 man pitching staff is ugh.
  18. But it's not only Sano and Kepler. By the day, it looks more and more like the Twins picked up a "free prospect" in Grossman. Jorge Polanco not only looks good with the stick but has also held his own at short. Rosario will come around if he keeps doing what he's doing. The remaining problem is Buxton. Yes, it's frustrating to watch him pinwheel at every pitch thrown his way but he's a talented guy... and he's just one guy. An important guy for the franchise to become competitive but still just one guy.
  19. The Twins are 7-6. Using pythag record, the Twins should be 9-4. Using BaseRuns record, the Twins should be 9-4. The Twins have lost one game by more than two runs. One game. On April 1st, I would have been quite happy with a 7-6 record. Does this team have problems? Of course it does. I'd rotate at least one guy, maybe two, off the roster and call up at least Vargas. Are 3-1 losses frustrating? Yes. Are 3-1 losses even more frustrating when the Twins score a single run on nine hits and four walks? Yes, of course, but that happens. It's baseball. Grossman is teeing off on the ball. Brian Dozier is being Brian Dozier. Sano is a beast. Kepler is the player we hoped he would be. Rosario looks to be taking important steps forward. Polanco is also taking steps forward. Escobar is a very solid backup. Castro has been a godsend for the pitching staff. So... Deep breaths.
  20. I'm not willing to concede that quite yet. He was a centerfielder in the minors and posted adequate numbers in Houston as a corner outfielder. He won't be good, on that we can all agree, but there's no reason he's as bad as he was in 2016. And with a starting alignment of Rosario/Kepler/Buxton, the fourth outfielder doesn't have to flash the leather when he plays every third night.
  21. We either let the kids play or we don't. There is no middle ground here. The "old man" in the outfield is Robbie Grossman at the ripe old age of 27 years old. There's also Daniel Palka, who is off to a fine start in Rochester. If we want to complain about Danny Santana, so be it. I don't think you'll find many defenders of him being on the roster... But the "outfield" playing most nights is the outfield the Twins need to field if they want to see long-term success. I'd give Santana the boot, play Grossman in right a little more often, and call up Vargas. Or keep Santana, play him less, and swap a pitcher for Vargas. Whatever. I don't really care about the 25th man very much. If it helps Paul sleep at night to have a pinch runner "do it all, but badly" player as the 25th man, so be it. That won't kill the team. The problem I see is that a short bench with Santana on it puts Molitor in a bad position position every third night or so.
  22. Buxton is a problem right now. The lack of a bench is a problem right now. Kepler is mashing the ball. Rosario has improved his approach but the .235 BABIP is killing him. That will normalize. It began to normalize last night, actually. The guy who should be getting reps on occasion, Robbie Grossman, has an absurd 1.043 OPS for the season. I struggle to see how the outfield is the problem here. Buxton is a problem. The 24 man pitching staff is a problem. The "outfield" isn't a real problem.
  23. Another thing to keep in mind is that MLB has a unique approach to broadcasting rights. Teams are jealously guarding their television and radio rights because individual teams negotiate (and receive all the profits from) those rights. Everything digital goes to MLB and is evenly distributed to all 30 teams. Obviously, this creates a problem for teams like the Yankees and Dodgers, who pull in far more revenue than the Athletics or Rays. I'd like to see that system change - it's better for the sport overall - but that's simply not going to happen.
  24. Hahahah, fair enough.
  25. That only makes him look worse. He posted a .662 OPS from July onward.
