    I'm not going to rehash what was or wasn't on the table. All we know is that De Leon is injured right now and there's a decent chance he'll go under the knife for Tommy John in the next few months. That, minus any other reliable information, means holding on to Dozier was the right move. If there are injury concerns for the headline prospect in a deal and he goes down with an injury before the season even starts, the non-trade shouldn't be criticized.

    Unfortunately, that was the case at second base around MLB. Which is why the Twins had one suitor for a 40 homer second baseman under a team-friendly contract. I can't blame the Twins for walking away from that deal, particularly after it became apparent the Dodgers had a second option lined up in Tampa. The Dodgers had all the power in that deal. That's not an optimal situation to try to move a guy coming off a 6 WAR season.

    Each cumulative start that's worse than the last accelerates the timeline. It's easy to kick the can down the road when Gibson is having bad 5 IP outings. It's something entirely different when those outings drop to 2-3 IP.

    Yeah... Pretty hard to get down on them for that deal in the short term.

    It was an easy call then, too, and my argument hasn't changed a bit in six months. Guys get injured. Guys underperform. When a team has as many shaky arms as the Twins do, quantity is the only way to hope to weather the storm. Remember, we're still a week from it being MAY. This clownshoe rotation couldn't even make it a month.

    I'm not carrying water for anyone, I'm simply saying that if you have to pay a guy either way and your pitching depth is comically bad, you don't throw away any arms. Get them out of the rotation, sure, but don't throw them away.

    I'm glad you don't run a MLB team. Have you looked at this rotation? Have you looked at the Twins MiLB starting depth? I'm fine with demoting Gibson to either the bullpen or Rochester but the Twins need arms, no matter how bad they are. Their depth is nearly non-existent.

    Dude, Berrios is going to be here shortly. He's going to take the fifth starter spot. Even if you call up Berrios in five days, you still have the same problem in 12-ish days when the Twins need a fifth starter. So it's either Duffey or Mejia.

    The Twins aren't in a place to cut any starter, no matter how bad he might be. Any calls to cut Gibson are emotionally charged and lacking in reason.

    I wonder if the front office is considering switching Duffey's and Gibson's roles on the roster. It's not as if the Twins have any other decent options unless they DL Gibson, which would allow them to recall Mejia.

    So, yeah, Kyle Gibson. How soon will Mejia be back in Minnesota? Two weeks? Three? The team can't continue to throw Gibson out there every fifth day.

    I don't think Gordon is the type of prospect the organization is going to rush. His bat is coming along slow and steady but is still rather underwhelming. I don't see him being a "250 plate appearances in AA and off to Minnesota" player. I think Escobar takes duties at either second or short if Dozier goes. If Adrianza is still around, then maybe he takes one of the middle infield roles (probably short). Vielma is a dark horse candidate as well.

    Mauer is not going to be permanently benched in April of 2017. You may want this to happen but it's not going to happen in reality. It's the very definition of a moot point. And in that scenario where Mauer plays first somewhat regularly, Palka is a bad platoon candidate to play alongside Joe. In that scenario, who hits against lefties? They're both going to suck against LHP so you've managed to rearrange deck chairs and do little else. Whereas Vargas and/or Park complement Joe much better.

    Sure, me too, but going with "young arms" simply doesn't work if you only have two guys you can promote to MLB. And I suspect that both of those guys will be in the rotation by the end of May or early June (given Hughes and Gibson, I think Mejia will be back in relatively short order). After that, the Twins' young arm depth is... *crickets* Literally nobody else behind them showing any kind of sign they'll be ready before the second half of the season. Gonsalves hasn't pitched. Stewart is struggling. Romero has barely gotten his feet wet in AA. It's easy to say "I want to watch young arms" but one must first have young arms to accomplish that goal. The Twins did not and do not have those arms in sufficient quantity to field even half of an MLB rotation.

    We're 17 games into new management where they have few/no good options at their disposal. Again, if we're still whining about these situations into June, then I'll start to become annoyed. But I'm not going to crucify the front office for not throwing a young pitcher into the MLB bullpen after 1.2 innings of minor league ball. Hell, lots of teams don't do that to 30 year old veterans after an injury.

    FTR, I didn't understand why people were overjoyed about the Santiago/Nolasco trade. I thought it was pretty meh because I wasn't ready to give up on Meyer. As for insurance, it was pretty easy to see the Twins were going to need insurance and lots of it. Even if May doesn't go down, at least one of Hughes and Gibson should probably be removed from the rotation as well. Two guys were not enough to back up a rotation as obviously shaky as this one and we're back to the Andrew Albers of the world once that depth drops to zero.

    Palka also hits left-handed. Replacing Mauer with Palka makes little sense. Vargas or Park, on the other hand...

    For the same reason guys rehab in the minors before returning to play in the majors. Before his recent appearance, as far as I can tell the last time Chargois pitched in a game was March 21st, almost exactly one month before his return to Rochester on April 20th. Given how JT scuffled in Spring Training, I understand the Twins' reluctance to throw him right back into the mix, particularly when their long reliever is the guy who went on the disabled list.

    I agree both Melotakis and Chargois are better pitchers but Melotakis is still rather untested and Chargois could use some rehab. If the bullpen looks like it does now when the fifth starter is recalled in 10-12 days, I will be immensely disappointed. If Chargois looks competent in his next 3-4 appearances, he needs to join the team in Minnesota.

    And that's the key right there. 1. The free agent market didn't have better options than Hector Santiago. 2. The Twins rotation is a live hand grenade and we all knew that was going to be the case entering the season. 3. In that situation, you don't want six viable starters. You want seven or eight. Given how this season has started - May injured, Hughes struggling, Gibson imploding, Mejia showing his rookie colors - it's pretty hard to look back and say "Yeah, retaining Hector Santiago was a real mistake". Because, without Santiago, god only knows what the rotation would look like right now, much less in June. He's a mediocre arm in an organization where mediocrity earns you second or third place in the pecking order.

    Melotakis has 22 IP in AA. I think we'll see him this season but I understand why the front office isn't rushing him to Minnesota in April. I think we'll see Chargois soon but I also understand why the front office isn't in a rush to bring him to Minnesota after he just made his first appearance of the season the other night. I think this is a stopgap solution for ten days. When the Twins need a fifth starter, I expect the roster to shuffle again and at least one of the bullpen arms will be permanently gone. In that situation, I can't get too hot and bothered about Boshers as an insurance policy in case the starters continue their recent 4 IP per start tendencies. The last thing I want to see is Molitor forced to burn out his best bullpen arms over a ten day stretch in late April and early May. If Boshers is demoted less than two weeks from now, that's the proper usage of guys like Buddy Boshers. What rankled me about the old front office was two month stretches of Buddy Boshers pitchers, not ten days.

    Then you're basically forcing yourself to call Mejia back up in ten days when a fifth starter is needed. Like I said, if Gibson is going to be removed from the rotation, it should be permanent. And the Twins will need one of Berrios/Mejia in the rotation in ten days, both if Gibson is removed. And while I'm not in love with demoting Mejia after three starts - that's too soon, IMO - it's hard to deny he was killing the team by averaging three innings per start.

    I suspect the front office is giving Gibson a bit more leash because when/if he is removed from the rotation, it will be permanent (unless injury issues arise and force him back in). And while I don't like Boshers in Minnesota, who should the Twins have called up? Chargois? He has pitched all of 1.2 innings this season. If this is a ten-day stopgap measure, it makes sense to backfill the roster with Boshers and let Chargois get his legs under him in 3-4 appearances in AAA.

    The more I think about this move, the more it makes sense to me. I'd like to see Chargois up but this is a temporary measure and he has barely pitched this season. It makes sense to let him rehab for a bit and then consider a promotion. The Twins don't need a fifth starter but they need another pitcher because their rotation has been posting some painfully short outings over the past week. So swap out your fifth starter for a bullpen guy and supplement your offense with Vargas. Basically, punt on the fifth starter decision for 10 days and pad your bullpen a bit while also adding another bat.
