  1. Yeah, the middle infield is going to be ugly this year, even worse than last. Maybe Polanco can improve slightly but it's a significant drop from half a season of Schoop to a full season of Arraez. Which is why it sure would be nice to get Donaldson, which removes a weak spot at third and potentially improves first base, too (though that's far from a given; I think Sano will be fine at first but we won't know that until he plays there).
  2. I agree with this. It's time to start pushing chips into the middle of the table en masse. Find a way to get Donaldson and then use trade pieces to acquire a starter. Go for it. Sano, Buxton, Rosario, et al aren't going to be here forever. I don't want or expect the front office to loot the farm entirely but it's time to start using resources to push this team to a place where it can compete with Houston and New York on something approaching an equal footing.
  3. Here's a good MLBTR round-up of the Donaldson situation as it stands now: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/assessing-the-state-of-the-josh-donaldson-market.html
  4. Eh, I can’t twist this offseason into a positive. The Twins are coming off a 101 win season, yet my excitement level is barely higher than the dark years of the past decade. That’s pretty dismal.
  5. Except they obviously have loads of things announced and in the works. Again, the service is eight weeks old.
  6. Seriously, it launched eight weeks ago and has an enormous wealth of content that staggers the mind. Are you upset because they didn't *also* launch 15 new shows during opening week? Crikey, man, I don't know what you expect from that service. They have a slew of shows in the works but expecting a brand new service to launch with all-new content on top of providing literally the best content a streaming service already offers is a bit much. Oh, and they launched at roughly 50% of the price of a Netflix subscription. Just having the ability to stream any Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, or Pixar film for $7/mo is a steal, much less the piles of other things they offer or have coming soon.
  7. The front office said they were pursuing impact pitching and then missed on literally every free agent pitcher of note. They deserve every (rational) ill word written about them because they failed to live up to their own promises, never mind the common sense necessity of the moves they said they were going to make (and didn't). Whether it's repetitive or not, that's the reality of the situation. If they go out and trade for Price or Gray tomorrow, we're done. All that bitching was (mostly) for naught. But the fact they signed both Bailey *and* Hill makes that move quite unlikely. These deals feel like someone admitting defeat and fans should be pretty damned mad about it.
  8. The front office missed on every free agent of note. They made this bed. Pay the man.
  9. Upon further reflection, it’s because signing both is an indication that there will be no additional pitching acquisitions.
  10. Somehow I’m more irritated that the Twins got both Bailey and Hill than if they had signed only one of them.
  11. If the Twins went out and got someone like Price or Gray THEN make these signings, whatever. They’re fine. But the visuals on this deal in the here and now make me want to throw up. This is bordering on completely unacceptable territory and fans have every right to be furious.
  12. Yuck. While the offseason isn’t over yet, this is looking more and more like a massive failure.
  13. Explain Dallas Keuchel then.
  14. We're simply not going to agree on this and that's okay. But bolded: the extra year is literally the crux. Bumgarnger is playing for $6m this year and has the rest deferred. IMO, he could have easily received a four year offer in the same range given the rest of the market.
  15. Bolded: then why are we even debating this? His contract fell basically in line (or under) MLBTR's estimate, except there was an extra year involved, which skews everything out of line. Meanwhile, everyone else is getting mad money like it's 2015 again. I just don't really understand why it's hard to say Bumgarner took less money to get what he wanted because he accepted a mediocre contract while everyone else in the business is Scrooge McDuck-ing it as they dive into piles of cash.
  16. I’m not even arguing whether Bumgarner shook off $100m but you just listed every other free agent getting more than we expected. Bumgarner didn’t have to shake off 5/$100m but he easily could have shaken off 4/$80m. Every pitcher is getting way more money than we expected and had Bumgarner waited to be the last one standing, it’s likely he gets way more money, too. The top end starter free agent market was closed almost a week before Christmas. Bumgarner didn’t have to sign when he did or for the amount he did to get more money. That’s not really a controversial statement to make.
  17. Yeah, but put the rest of the free agent market in context around that deal. Ryu got basically the same money over fewer years. Wheeler got *way* more money and turned down even more than that. If Bumgarner was interested in the money above all else, he could have held out and gotten more than he did from Arizona. The way the rest of the market played out made that pretty clear.
  18. Bumgarner's 2020 contract is for $6m and the rest is crazy-deferred. We shouldn't need any more evidence that he chose to go to the place he wanted to live and not where the money was.
  19. I don’t really care about the prospect capital at this point, I just want the front office to go get the pitcher they are most confident in going forward. I believe the same about free agency, it’s why I don’t really cling to specific names. Go get the player they think has the most potential. But if they swing and miss entirely, that’s a problem.
  20. Ridiculous. I didn’t even want Ryu that much and would have paid that given the Twins need for pitching. This front office needs to get over the fear of signing a bad contract and just pay what it takes to get a good freakin’ pitcher.
  21. I’m not content to abandon FA but I’m content to abandon Keuchel at that price. But the FA ship has mostly sailed. That doesn’t mean it was okay the Twins missed out on so many players but it is the reality of the situation.
  22. Oh wait, are we considering Kuechel an ace now? My post was specifically about Kuechel, a pitcher I would not rate *above* Berrios, Odorizzi, or Pineda in this rotation. Similar to them in results? Sure, yeah, okay. But not better.
  23. Honestly, I didn't want Kuechel much but thought he could be had for maybe $15m per year with an extra year you didn't want to pay. At the price he got, give up prospects and go get a better pitcher in trade. Take the hit on the chin in the farm system and legitimately improve the team.
  24. LIke Bumgarner, I don't care much for Keuchel but the Twins *have* to get either Keuchel or Ryu. Which one? I don't think I care at this point. Both were near the bottom of my list of acceptable (or better) options, albeit for very different reasons.
