  1. Um, not really. Whose fault is it that Miguel Sano has an OPS 115 points lower than last season? It's pretty hard to blame that on anyone other than Miguel Sano. He had the same coaching staff last season. But I agree that when your entire bank of young players fail at once, at least some of the blame needs to be placed on the coaching staff. But players are also responsible for their performance. It's not one or the other. And that's one of my biggest pet peeves with these types of discussions. People pick a side and come hell or high water, they'll defend it to the end. Like most things in life, the Twins 2016 season is the result of many shades of grey and many failures from all levels of the organization. We should be discussing degrees of blame, not the total load/offload of blame to one side or the other. That's ridiculous.
  2. Six of one, half dozen of the other. There's no way this team wins without the young players picking it up. Every young player has failed to some degree (which also could be, at least partially, on the coaching staff). But that doesn't excuse the bullpen and roster decisions. Everyone gets a lot of blame for this season.
  3. I disagree. Did the 2015 team benefit from luck? Sure, of course they did... But they were in the thick of the race when many of us were clamoring for more bullpen pieces (its inevitable implosion was nearly assured). We argued over the details: I didn't want the Twins to go big on anyone, others felt differently... But most of us agreed that the bullpen was a huge problem long before the trade deadline (as in two months prior to the deadline). Then this happened between July 18th to August 17th. 8.10 ERA, 10 IP, 18 H, 3 BB, 7 SO. That's Glen Perkins' stat line. He had two blown saves and two losses during that time. Four games. The Twins missed the postseason by three games. Had Ryan actually attempted to shore up the bullpen in June (or, as some of us were screaming, May), the Twins could easily have stopped at least two of their major losing streaks in 2015 and it's possible the season ends quite differently. Jepsen did a fine job in 2015 but he was too little, too late. The bullpen needed a shot in the arm no later than June 1st, not July 31st.
  4. Even *if* Ryan is willing to trade Dozier, fans shouldn't get upset if he isn't moved at the deadline. Dozier is a better offseason trade candidate than a deadline trade candidate.
  5. Beat me to it. Pitchers have some finesse where they throw the ball but mistakes happen *all the time*. Lots of guys have built solid careers on just getting by on good pitches and mashing bad ones.
  6. Unless teams are low balling offers and treating Nunez as a futility option, I probably trade the guy. He's not a .900 OPS guy - at least I don't think he is - but he has shown enough spark over the past two seasons that I don't give the guy away.
  7. Yes, all of this. It's one thing if the team is contending and Arcia doesn't fit. It's another thing if players with more upside force Arcia to the waiver wire. But this team... This season... It's like they're throwing darts blindfolded. Never before have I seen a season where a full 50% (or more) of the moves leave me scratching my head, unsure what the thinking was behind the decision. Even when I don't agree with a move, at least I can see the rationale behind it most of the time. But this season...
  8. I think the best case scenario is that he comes back and turns into a useful LOOGY for 2-3 seasons. I think the most likely scenario is that he comes back, scuffles badly, and is out of baseball within 18 months. Which is too bad because I really like Perkins.
  9. I'm beginning to understand what it felt like to be a Pirates or Royals fan through the 2000s.
  10. Meh. This move seems reactionary and we're well past the point where the Twins should care about being reactionary. I hope Buxton succeeds but it's hard to imagine he has learned enough to adjust in one month of play in Rochester.
  11. I was wondering if one of the anemic Twins' offenses of the steroid era was worse. Thanks for the research.
  12. 1968 should be discarded as an aberration. MLB posted the second-lowest runs per game in 1968 at just 3.42. The only year with fewer runs per game is 1908 at 3.38. So the 2016 Twins are, in actuality, much worse than their 1968 counterparts. Which makes them the worst offensive Twins team in history, probably by a healthy margin.
  13. Are you suggesting Neil Allen is a bad coach? Because... No, I can't agree with that even a little bit. What Meyer needed was confidence and support. He didn't get that from Molitor with the quick hook in a game where he was struggling but not terrible.
  14. I've stopped even trying to understand what the hell is going on in this organization right now.
  15. This post has caused me to reevaluate the decision to only let people like a post once.
  16. When was the last time Ryan traded a prospect of the caliber of Gordon? (Hint: the answer is "never")
  17. Well, that's been settled. Meyer to the rotation.
  18. I'm not saying the Twins have handled Meyer well - I don't understand half the moves made over the past 2-3 weeks - but skipping one start shouldn't hurt Alex too much.
  19. You guys are acting as if Meyer hasn't pitched since Spring Training. He last pitched on April 20th. In essence, he skipped one start. Is that optimal? No. Is it a deal-breaker? No, it shouldn't be... If the Twins plan on starting him, I'm sure he'll get some BP sessions in before games and be ready to go on Sunday.
  20. Yeah, but the nature of starters makes that more acceptable. Only one starter goes on any given day whereas you can use an entire bullpen on any given day. It makes it a lot harder to make in-game decisions when you get to pick between mediocre guy A, B, C, and D.
  21. Jepsen is a pretty good seventh inning guy. He's a tolerable eighth inning guy. He's not a good closer (though I think closers are overrated anyway so there's that). The problem, once again, isn't Jepsen... It's depth.
