  1. And this is why you wait to trade. That's probably my only real complaint with the Liriano trade. Teams get crazy and stupid in the last 24 hours of the deadline. Hopefully JR can take advantage of it.
  2. I'd probably value Maholms over Liriano, especially if I ran a team that plans to contend next year as well.
  3. You mean excuses like "Liriano hasn't been very good for a very long time and that marginalized his value?" No team in their right mind was going to loot the farm for a player like Francisco. The only thing I didn't understand about the trade was why JR accepted that deal when Francisco could have made another start. Of course, his value could have dropped even lower after that start so there's a gamble there, too. This was just a crappy situation. I don't fault JR for not bringing home the farm when there were better pitching options out there to be had. I only question whether he should have waited two days and I doubt that would have made much of a difference overall.
  4. There are people who like the deal? Where? I haven't seen any. I've seen a lot of "mehs" and "damn, that's all they could get?" but very few statements of positivity about the trade.
  5. Plouffe's value is still quite low. I don't see a point in trading him (plus, he's on the DL). Revere is an option, though I think it makes more sense to move Span because of his value. But if a team is biting on Revere, you certainly listen to them. Burton probably doesn't have much value, either... but if a team is interested, you ship him out yesterday. Diamond is a classic "sell high" case. I know it sucks to think about moving the team's only consistent starter, but...
  6. I wasn't on board with trading Liriano but trading Young wasn't a bad idea. Since Santana and Garza left, the Twins haven't exactly been overflowing with starting pitching. It would have been relatively easy to move Young with the excuse "we need more pitching and have plenty of offense" without setting off too many alarm bells to potential trade teams.
  7. Heh, he'll put the bat on his shoulder and keep it there. (obviously that should have read 0-1)
  8. Screw Liriano, I'm going to predict Mauer's line tonight: 0-0, 4 BB, 1 K. I think Joe will know what Francisco is going to throw before Francisco will.
  9. The idea is right. The player is wrong.
  10. Pretty much this. Take what you can get for either Alexi or Carroll today. Aggressively push Willingham, Span, and Perkins. Trade if the right deal comes along. Listen to offers on Morneau.
  11. I think Heyman should try to find a little cornier background for his Twitter page.
  12. Even if they're eyeing competing in 2013, that does not exclude them trading Span and/or Willingham... It just means that they probably won't be doing it today or this offseason. The Twins moved AJ in the middle of contending when they felt they had the assets to make the move and not miss a step. Considering how long Willingham and Span are under contract, it's not hard to envision that scenario happening again (possibly minus the "contention" part). It's not something I advocate doing but it's a real possibility and not necessarily a terrible idea.
  13. To quote my game article that will be posted later today: "Tonight, we can count on at least one thing: the fans at Target Field are going to boo a pitcher."
  14. The more I look at this trade, the more I like it for the Pirates. It's hard not to like what they're doing in Pittsburgh (how often can one say that?).
  15. If the Twins had made the move for Burton, I'd probably applaud the ballsy-ness of the acquisition. But I still wouldn't be sold on the point of doing it. Either way, I wouldn't get too upset or happy about it. But not Perkins. No way.
  16. And if Snider was a struggling middle infielder or pitcher, I'd probably agree. I just don't see the point in trading resources for something the organization has in quantity, even if that quantity isn't quite ready yet.
  17. If the Twins could have had him for virtually nothing, it'd be worth a flyer. But Glen Perkins or Jared Burton for a struggling outfielder? No thanks. The Twins could put those resources to better use than that, I think.
  18. With the impending logjam of outfielders, I see no point in the Twins pursuing an under-performing young outfielder.
  19. That's an excellent point... well, it would have been if you hadn't made it up. Baseball-Reference has Sanchez's last three WARs at 2.9, 3.5, 1.4 compared to Liriano's 4.0 .6, -.5. Fangraphs has Sanchez's last three WARs at 4.4, 3.8, 2.2 compared to Liriano's 6.0, 1.0, 1.1. Again, not even close to the same player. Infante has a combined WAR of 8.2 in the past 2 2/3rd seasons. You understand that WAR means "wins above replacement", right? And that a player worth an average of 2.5-3.0 WAR per season is, by the term's very definition, not a replacement player?
  20. Sanchez is both a better pitcher and is more consistant than Liriano, posting an ERA+ of 117, 106, 100, 104 over the past four years with nearly 200 IP every year (compared to Liriano's epic ERA+ of 76, 112, 80, 77). He's the anti-Liriano. Unspectacular but far far FAR more consistent. The type of guy you give up a little more to get because he's worth extending to a multi-year deal. And it's really convenient that the people who want to play up Liriano have the tendency to ignore that the Marlins also gave up Infante in the trade, a middle infielder who is signed cheaply through 2013, has posted an OPS+ of 100 this season, and has posted a WAR of 2.9, 2.3, and 1.8 (partial season) over the past three years. And if you are a contending team, why on earth would you trade for Liriano when Sanchez is on the market? That would be a colossally stupid move. You try to get the best guys on the market first, not leave them on the board for your competition to snatch up later. In short, I don't think you should be calling anyone naive.
  21. Okay, so that's the issue. I submitted a question to the software provider. Now we wait...
  22. To quote Ryan: Those statements are not at odds with one another. You try for a high upside guy. The closer that guy is to the majors, the better. If you can't get a MLB-ready guy, you delve into the lower minors.
  23. There actually isn't a conflict. JR starts with a high upside, close to majors guy. He then moves down from that point. If you want to sell something for a dollar, you don't start negotiations at one dollar.
