  1. No way would I model my franchise after the White Sox and Tigers. The Sox got a mammoth pitching performance, well above what should have been the case, and made a run. They were a good team but their pitching got hot at the right time. The Tigers? Oh god, I think they're one of the dumber franchises in baseball. The Fielder signing is going to sink them in the long term for no good reason. I'll take the slow and steady approach of the Twins franchise over the ups-and-downs of those two teams any day of the week. There's a reason the White Sox farm looks like 1933 Oklahoma. Pretty soon, that's all going to come crashing down on Williams' head. The Twins absolutely developed young players during their decade-long run. After all, eight of those ten players you listed spent quality time on a major league roster and most of them turned into well above average players. The Twins just didn't rush them unnecessarily and I thank them for that.
  2. Peak for peak, Liriano is probably a better pitcher. But Sanchez is a much more reliable pitcher and I'd rather have him on the roster than Liriano. As for thinking that Liriano might be a better pitcher for the rest of the season, I think there's a possibility of that. But when a team is looking to acquire guys at the deadline (guys they probably want to extend), they're going to take the consistently above-average Sanchez over the peaks-and-deep-as-the-Mariana-Trench-valleys Liriano. And they're going to pay a lot more for that Sanchez-type player than they will Liriano. I'm as disappointed as anyone about this trade but it's hard to say what was available to be had. The Brewers didn't get that great a return on Greinke, either.
  3. Peavy suffered multiple injuries. Ubaldo peaked and was traded on the decline. There were concerns about him well before the trade and they proved accurate. Sabathia was a beast during his run with the Brewers... an absolute monster. He wasn't that pitcher before and he hasn't been it since, though he's still very good. Crazy-good half seasons happen all the time. AJ Burnett is a freakin' headcase. Josh Beckett. Yeah, he saw a drop. A drop that he's slowly recovered (mostly) over the past two years. Cliff Lee has only seen a 1% bump. Either way, those drops do not equal "pitch to contact guy". Sanchez is a good pitcher. Not elite, but good. Even if he sees a drop in his Swing Strike (which he surely will), it doesn't magically make him a 5 K/9 guy. He'll probably end up somewhere around 6.5-7 K/9, which is just shy of Scott Baker territory (and not far from one of your examples, Josh Beckett)... Not exactly "pitch to contact". A middle-of-the-road guy. Not a ton of Ks but not a ton of contact, either. But you didn't say that... You called him a "pitch to contact player", which he definitely is not.
  4. Pavano being hurt for four years and generally sucking after his move to the AL had nothing to do with it, I'm sure. By the time he was effective and healthy in the AL, he was in his early 30s versus his early 20s dominance with the Marlins. And Sanchez' last three years of K/9... 9.3, 8.0, 8.2.
  5. Sigh. Do you really think Sanchez is going to magically lose 2.5% of his Swinging Strike % in the AL and turn into Scott Diamond? Clayton Kershaw has a career 10.2% Swing Strike. Matt Cain has a career 8.8%. Zack Greinke is at 8.8% as well. Yovani Gallardo is at 8.7%. Gio Gonzalez is at 9.2%. Those are half the guys in the top 10 in Ks in the NL this season. Anibal Sanchez is not a pitch to contact guy. It's just that simple. And Pavano? Really?
  6. The Twins spent most of the past ten years contending for a division title. It's not surprising that most of the young players didn't stick. It should also be noted that out of those guys who did see ML service time (non call-ups) at an early age, Adam Johnson and Swarzak the only guys who didn't stick in the majors after they were sent back down. Look at your last list of ten guys. Young, Gomez... You don't think those two could have used more time in the minors? You don't think they were rushed? Oliveros looks to be in the same boat. He's putting up good numbers in AAA. Escobar and Hernandez, well... Time will tell with those guys. I have almost no problems with how the Twins have handled their minor league players outside of a few glaring exceptions (Jason Bartlett, anyone?). They take a more cautious approach but it's not as if those guys lose anything by spending half a season more in the minors. Their service clock starts when they get the call and the Twins get six years out of them, whether they're called up at age 22 or age 24. It's hardly an indictment of the Twins system that other teams rush their prospects and possibly stunt their development. Do you really want to see Arcia in Minnesota right now, flailing away at breaking balls? What is the point of such a thing?
  7. Yep. I've said from the beginning that the Twins gain virtually nothing by trading Morneau but have a lot to lose if he comes around. If he's posting an .800-.850 OPS next July, he'd be an extremely attractive trade piece for contending teams (assuming the Twins aren't in it).
  8. He's a pitch to contact guy? With a 9.6% Swinging Strike percentage in his career with three of the past five seasons over 10%? Wha?
  9. He's been coming around lately. If he returns to even 80% of his former self, that'd be huge for the Twins next season.
  10. Who is stagnating? It seems to me that the Twins are doing their typically cautious prospect shuffle but it's not as if any of the guys are raking at a level where they previously had success. They show prolonged success and then get a bump to the next level... as it should be. The White Sox aggressively promote their guys because they have so few players of quality at any level in the system.
  11. Sanchez is far and away a superior pitcher to Liriano and the Tigers will almost surely try to extend him. Sanchez has almost no question marks surrounding him while Liriano is rife with questions.
  12. This article is hilarious in a variety of ways. Well done, Parker.
  13. Exactly. It seems to be the opposite of risk. The Twins get a soft-tosser and a no-OBP middle infielder. Isn't the Twins system chock-full of both of those things already?
  14. Sigh. Well, I'm not going to rail on the trade too hard. I was wrong about the Diamond trade and so was 95% of the rest of the fan base (most of the other 5% consisted of dyed-in-the-wool homers). We all need to eat a few platefuls of crow for that trade. With that said, I still don't like it. But I'll reserve a small portion of my hatred of the trade to admit that we don't know much about these players and there could be something there we don't see on a stat sheet.
  15. That's the only glimmer of hope I can take away from this trade. Unfortunately, the chance of striking gold twice on that type of player is pretty slim.
  16. Twins: Span CF Revere RF Mauer DH Willingham LF Morneau 1B Doumit C Valencia 3B Dozer SS Casilla 2B (Not Francisco Liriano P) Indians: Choo RF Cabrera SS Santana DH Lopez 3B Brantley CF Duncan LF Marson C Kotchman 1B Lillibridge 2B (Jimenez P)
  17. I'm going back to sleep and when I wake back up, somebody had better made this right again.
  18. I just realized that Albert is going to need a monster last third of the season if he's going to continue his 30 HR streak.
  19. Pretty much how I feel about it. If Mauer had caught 80 games at this point, sure, he should get a few 2nd/3rd/4th votes behind Trout. But with half his ABs coming at first and DH? Nah, not so much.
  20. I love sound bytes like this one. They make absolutely no sense whatsoever but look really good on a protest poster. Good old fashioned American politicking, that is... Let's make vague generalizations about how that politician hates you and everything you stand for... Never mind that it doesn't hold up to any kind of thought process, just make sure that you attack that politician's "Americanism" and you're all good. Demagoguery much? Politicians now get arrested for losing elections? Damn, that's rough, man.
  21. Twins: Span CF Revere RF Mauer C Willingham LF Morneau 1B Doumit DH Valencia 3B Dozier SS Casilla 2B (Deduno P) Native Americans: Choo RF Brantley CF Kipnis 2B Santana C Hafner DH Damon LF Kotchman 1B Hannahan 3B Lillibridge SS (Masterson P)
  22. Not to mention that he's a year and a half older than Arcia.
  23. Well, damn. This is turning into a good old fashioned ass kicking.
  24. You know, I haven't even signed up for the RSS feed. I'll do so and keep track of it. Once I see how it displays, I'll make the necessary adjustments. I'm not against posting full articles if an advertisement slipped in. I'll talk to the rest of the crew about it.
