  1. Agreed. I'm all for avoiding pitching contracts that are longer than four years but this team can't ignore the quality pitching that is on the market this offseason. We'll get to see another 100 loss team if they try it. The Morneau quotes don't really bother me. JR obviously feels that Morneau's value is on the rise. If he wants to hold on to him longer, it's not the worst idea in the world. I don't think teams are offering anything of value for him right now and it's not as if the Twins need the salary relief (doubly so after JR's comments).
  2. I actually don't disagree with a lot of what he said there but this pitching market is "thin" and that he won't participate in it? WHAT?!?! The only thing I can carry away from that statement that makes me want to watch a single Twins game is 2013 is the word "elite", which is really thin this offseason. If JR is saying that the Twins won't pursue a Hamels-type player (and there isn't really one of those on the market anyway) but instead go after a Marcum/Jackson type player, I'm completely fine with that. But if he's saying he won't pursue any decent starting pitching at all, fire the guy. Right now. That's the type of statement that is so completely illogical that it makes me want to scream. This team needs four starting pitchers. FOUR. You're not going to assemble four guys by pulling junk like Pavano off the heap and giving him innings. You might get one guy that way. No way in hell are you going to get four. Or even two.
  3. Guess what Voter ID laws don't fix? What you're reading about right there. Unless identification cards start listing "felon" on them, your "fix" isn't going to work. Those people can still walk up to the polls and vote. One of the great things about this country is that it's illegal to require the citizenry to carry around "papers" to identify themselves. It's one of the things we hold dear to avoid becoming a police state, something the Republicans bitch about the Democrats creating on a daily basis. Yet it's amazing how willingly they embrace moving toward that police state the moment they think it can win them an election or two. Disgusting. I don't see how anyone can support such a blatant move to rig the ballots.
  4. Which, and how do you know? Correct answers: Which? -- those people who are voting illegally. How do I know? -- I know this because this is what they and more the 70% of the country have said they want. The democratic process is supposed to be an inclusive process. Adding another step (and requiring people to pay money, as they're doing in many states) is NOT a step forward in that democratic process. No serious study has found voter fraud to be even a glimmer of a problem in this country and these laws don't step on the toes of one of the easiest ways to create "fraud" in voting (absentee ballots). Absentee voting also happens to be a traditionally Republican voter block. Don't you see the trend here? And if you do, how can you not be disgusted by it? The GOP is going out of their way to squash traditionally Democratic voting blocks by requiring additional steps for the poor and the elderly to vote, two groups that vote Blue and also happen to not have identification at a rate about five times that of the typical white middle classer.
  5. I don't think it has as much to do with the league catching up so much as it has to do with him throwing meatballs over the plate last inning. Guys were squaring up on him and drilling the ball.
  6. For lack of a more polite way to put it, this team is un-****ing-watchable.
  7. It pisses me off so much that Revere wanted to bunt there. That is stupid baseball.
  8. Also, going to the game tonight. I don't think I've ever seen Diamond pitch live.
  9. True, he's not as good as his ERA would indicate, but his peripherals are still pretty good, and much better than what you'd expect out of a back of the rotation guy. I'm tired of hearing "#4/#5 blah blah blah" guy. Diamond is no world-beater but he has a decent chance of being a good mid-rotation starter. Yes, his strikeout figures are low. Yes, the rest of his peripherals are mediocre. But when combined, he's a pretty good pitcher. Maybe not as good as 2012 makes it seem, but he's still a quality guy who shouldn't collapse like Blackburn as long as he can keep the ball down.
  10. The problem with Vargas is that he plays half his games in Seattle and all his games with the Seattle outfield at his back. Almost all his numbers are due to regress in 2013, given that he only keeps 40% of his balls on the ground. Fine for Seattle with the Mariners OF, not quite so fine in Target Field with the Twins outfield. I'm not against the idea of going after a player like Vargas. I actually think it's a good idea. I just don't think Vargas is the right guy because if you remove him from the Pacific Northwest, he could turn into a pretty bad pitcher quickly. He doesn't strike guys out, he lets waaay too many balls be hit in the air, he is riding an artificially low BABIP this season, and he's not cheap in 2013. I think there are far better deals to be had on the market or in trades. There is a reason why his road ERA from 2010-2012 is ~1.75 higher than his home ERA. He's not the type of guy that plays well in a small or mid-sized stadium. In fact, those stadiums will kill a guy like that.
  11. No worries, I know users get pissed when their favorite site feels like it has been attacked by advertisers and ruins their experience. When it comes to ads, it's a tough game. I don't see the ads you see. John doesn't see the ads I see. Therefore, it's hard to know exactly how you're seeing the website. We try to provide a consistent experience but some things are out of our hands and we rely on the community to let us know what they're seeing/doing. In the case of ads, it was obnoxious. When I finally saw the pop-out ads, I completely sympathized with the complaints in this thread. I hate those things just as much as the rest of you. Anyway, the problem is *hopefully* resolved. If it continues, please let us know. Also, why aren't you viewing the site on the mobile browser? Or are you using an Android tablet instead of phone?
  12. Just so everyone is updated, we're working on removing the pop-out ads. Those are the ads that appear to look like a normal ad but then expand to 3-5 times the normal size (and sometimes blare sound at you, to boot). If you continue to see them, please let us know. I haven't seen any in the past 24 hours but I never saw them much in the first place.
  13. Twins: Denard Span CF Ben Revere RF Joe Mauer C Josh Willingham LF Justin Morneau 1B Ryan Doumit DH Trevor Plouffe 3B Jamey Carroll 2B Pedro Florimon SS (Scott Diamond P) Mariners: Dustin Ackley 2B Franklin Gutierrez CF Kyle Seager 3B Jesus Montero DH Justin Smoak 1B Miguel Olivo C Eric Thames RF Trayvon Robinson LF Brendan Ryan SS (Hisashi Iwakuma P)
  14. Scott Diamond is better than Jason Vargas. That says a lot about the "potential" of Jason Vargas. At least Scott keeps the ball on the ground to go along with those pedestrian peripherals and he's not riding an unsustainable .250 BABIP to put up that above average ERA.
  15. If it were only that easy to sign quailty SP's. Grienke will get a minimum of 10 mill per season, probably more like 12-13 per..or higher. I'm not sure what Sanchez will command, but it will certainly be more than 3 mil per season. I don't see the Twins making any sort of splash in the free agent market. If they do, It will be of the low-end, washed veteran type...like Marquis, Pavano. I'm pretty sure Nick's numbers are per year. I think Greinke will get in the $15-18m per year range while Jackson/Sanchez will be more in the $12-15m per year range. Then you have guys like Liriano, who will probably get somewhere in the $10m per year range. Of course, Greinke has spent the past 2-3 months systematically destroying his FA value. Hard to say what he'll get on the market. A lot is riding on his September and October, assuming the Angels even get to the postseason. In any case, there is no way the Twins sign a top shelf and a second tier FA pitcher. Even the Yankees can't accomplish that most seasons. The best they can hope for is to snag one of the second tier guys.
  16. With Marcum, Liriano, Greinke, Jackson, Sanchez, and others hitting the FA market this winter, there is really no excuse for the Twins not to pick up one of those guys in the $12-15m per year range in a 3-5 year deal. They have the money and they have the need. History be damned, they need to pick up one of those guys.
  17. It has less to do with the Twins rotation and everything to do with buying high on Vargas. You're paying for a guy who will almost certainly regress from his current numbers but the Mariners will almost certainly expect a return in line with his current performance. That's a bad baseball decision. The Mariners would probably start the discussion with Parmelee. That's not a place the Twins should consider going at this point. Not for one year of a guy who is going to regress.
  18. Agreed. The guy might have success at TF based on his success at Safeco but it's far from a given. He's having a good year with pretty mediocre (or bad) peripherals. Vargas is the type of guy you pick up on the cheap after he posts a 4.50 ERA and then you cross your fingers, hoping for a rebound. He's not the guy you pick up after a 3.50 ERA because he's going to be overpaid and he's almost certainly going to regress.
  19. The NL East has its moments but in no way can it be compared to the AL East. If the BoSox continue to falter and the Phillies rebound quickly (unlikely), that could change going forward but historically, the two divisions aren't even that close. The AL East has two of the top four spending teams in baseball and the best small market team in the game. The NL East has Philadelphia and a consistently solid Atlanta franchise.
  20. It shouldn't be hard to pull the team into mediocrity. One good FA pitcher, another scrub (Baker would be my choice), and one of Gibson/Hendriks to step up. To contend, it would require all that and a considerable dose of luck. Not impossible, but unlikely.
  21. I thought this had been announced awhile ago.
  22. More sleazy, actually. The Dems are just pandering to a demographic to pull in votes. The GOP is actively trying to get certain demographics to stop voting, period. Yay, democracy.
  23. Mariners offense, home crowd, Hendriks on the mound... Come on, somebody get the guy a win.
