    I wouldn't shed too many tears if De Vries and Deduno make the rotation out of ST, just as long as Gibson isn't taking one of the other five spots (ie. The Filler D's can't be replaced by Gibson later in the season as one/both of them inevitably fail). Keeping a scrub in the #5 spot with the intent of replacing him with Gibson isn't the worst plan in the world given the Twins' pitching woes. But it has to be a #4/5 spot... If De Vries/Deduno are #3/4 starters, this team is going to be awful for a third consecutive season.

    Excellent analysis, Parker. They mirror my thoughts on Hendriks. Pitching across the body to same-sided hitters is folly. You need to go hard and inside on those hitters, giving them as little time as possible to watch the pitch travel to the plate. It shortens the pitch instead of giving a righty the chance to track the ball from the hand, across the plate, and into their wheelhouse (it also gives them a fraction of a second more to set up their swing or decide to take a ball). That's going to lead to disastrous results more often than not (plus, it allows righties to constantly crowd the plate and take the outside pitch away from the hurler). From day one, I've said that Hendriks needs to stop being cute with his pitching and stop pitching scared. He still hasn't done that.

    Oh, I know the reasoning. That still doesn't make it right and it still shows a complete lack of sympathy for their fellow man (along with a healthy dose of ignoring recent history). Minorities should be the first ones in line to support gay marriage based on their own ancestors' struggles gaining equality in this country.

    I think the Twins should hold two spots open for De Vries, Hendriks, Deduno, Gibson, etc. Diamond automatically gets a spot. That means the front office should pick up two non-horrible pitchers this offseason. Whether they come via free agency or trades, I do not care.

    Wow. The Orioles just won as the Rays left fielder (didn't catch who was out there, so many switches) had the ball bounce out of his glove on a diving catch. Easily the best game I've seen all season.

    Most of the time, it won't matter. But your odds of winning are higher if you do it and in the sport of baseball and a 162 game season, you go with the odds.

    There is an outside chance that the Yankees could be knocked out of the playoffs entirely. That would be fantastic, doubly so if the Twins help it happen.

    The Rays/O's game is amazing. 13th inning, the Rays flub a bunt, give up a Texas Leaguer, and the O's load the bases with no outs. So what does Maddon do? He pulls his left fielder, places him in front of second, and runs a five man infield. First batter grounds it right to the fifth infielder. Force at home. The Orioles win the game right there if Maddon deploys a standard defensive layout. Strikeout. Strikeout. And the Rays are still playing baseball. Such a simple move but one you wouldn't see from ~29 other managers in the sport. Sad.

    This. There is little point (and considerable downside) to trading Morneau unless the team plans to spend the money elsewhere or they can get something of value for him.

    Ah, I see the chart you posted. Yeah, you're correct in that creating an image is the only way to produce something like that on the forums. But the table method I mentioned will work for table data.

    It looks as if you can just select, copy, and paste in the table data and it will work. If you click on the "a/A" link in the top left of the text editor, you can then edit the table's properties.

    I don't believe there is. You can try outputting the chart as HTML and posting it that way but I'm not sure a normal user can post HTML on the forum (I know pure HTML cannot be posted but vBulletin sometimes converts it to a hybrid BBCode/HTML format). I'll see if I can't find an example and try it out.

    I don't think it even needs to be hope. If the Twins can somehow magically pull a league average rotation and keep their offense, they'll be in the "thick" of the AL Central, as meager as that can be. Look at Detroit and Chicago. They're both pretty mediocre overall but one of them is going to the playoffs. The Twins can join that club rather easily with one smart FA pickup, one scrapheap guy, and one smart trade this offseason. With a little bit of luck, that rounds out this rotation enough to be "competitive" in the short term.
