  1. Agreed. I'm not a big Hendriks fan but there's a chance he turns into Scott Diamond with a few more Ks (not many, just a few more). Correia and Pelfrey, not so much.
  2. PJ Walters? Over Hendriks? Really? You have to be joking. I don't think Hendriks will ever be a very good pitcher but at least he is 23 and has dominated the minors. That's more than Walters has ever done.
  3. Awesome. So JR has used all that money available to him this offseason to pick up an awful old pitcher for two years and an awful young pitcher for one year. Yee hah. Makes me want to go snatch up an entire section of season tickets. Just ****ing awful. Trade Willingham already and stop screwing around. If you're completely unwilling to pay market price for players that don't suck, start rebuilding properly. At least that gives us something to get excited about in 2013.
  4. Don't they, though? I know the number was around $7m for awhile but after this offseason, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that number has risen a fair amount in recent weeks. Anyway, I'm not arguing the accuracy of the numbers... Just using them to point out that Edwin Jackson is worth a hell of a lot more than $6m and change a year.
  5. Read it awhile back... Was it a member of the Rays front office that said it? Can't remember. And that should have read "per win above replacement", not "per win".
  6. You're joking, right? The average team spends about $8-9m per win. Edwin Jackson is worth somewhere between 3-4 wins a season but you only want to give him $7m a year? Good luck signing anyone with that attitude.
  7. No, I don't fault the networks. I fault each individual in power who buckles to pressure and throws their morality to the curb, but mostly, I blame the people who watch this trash. If there was no demand for it, news agencies wouldn't bother.
  8. It may be you but it ain't me. I hate hate HATE tabloid journalism. I mean, I despise it to my very core. I do not read about celebrities. I do not read about tabloid court cases (Casey Anthony comes to mind). I won't read about this CT killer. I avoid this kind of thing as much as possible. But you're right, this kind of tabloid news is only broadcast because the people like it. Drive around the Twin Cities and look at the billboards... How many "Dirty Every Thirty Celebrity News" signs do you see? I want to punch the people who watch that kind of **** straight in the face. Not joking. I absolutely loathe this part of American culture. It repulses me. I view it as people who watch this kind of thing admitting that "My life is so inconsequential and boring that I have to feel better about myself by watching someone publicly fall to pieces, which somehow validates my existence... because I suck. I really, really suck as a person." I don't hate much in this life but this is one of those things that I despise on so many levels.
  9. Please, no. Anything but Punto. Well, not anything. But close to anything.
  10. It's not about tip-toeing around this particular man's name. It's about denying the people who do these terrible things something they certainly wanted: fame. Was this man mentally disturbed? Certainly, and we need to do a better job of identifying these warning signs. I don't think it's any coincidence that these kinds of shootings have continued to escalate since the massive publicity of Columbine. If you're mentally unstable and considering such an act, knowing that your name will go down in the annals of history is only encouragement to one-up the horrible wretch who shot up a school/theatre/whatever before you.
  11. I'm not talking about ignoring the tragedy or the mental health issues that caused it. I'm talking about ignoring the man that caused it.
  12. Everyone will deride him publicly and then rush home to watch television that examines every minutia of his life... feeding right into the reason why he did this. Fame. Publicity. What I'd give to see every major news network treat him as a non-entity and never mention his name. Talk about the issue all you want but never mention this prick's name... not even once.
  13. Thanks, everybody. I've re-opened the ticket and hopefully this time, we'll find a real solution for the problem.
  14. That'd be my choice though Mauer is a slightly better average guy and slightly down in slugging.
  15. Dude, you are seriously underselling Mauer's ability. "Doug Mientkiewicz"? "Paul Molitor light"? Mientkiewicz had two seasons that were almost as good as Mauer's 2012, which was a slight disappointment compared to previous seasons and you could see Joe struggling to get his legs under him early in the season and then peaking as the season progressed. Molitor had an OBP of over .400 three times in his career. Mauer has already done it five times and he's not even 30 yet. I'd say that Molitor is a pretty good comp for Mauer with Joe being the better OBP guy and Molitor slugging higher. Overall, right now their careers are pretty similar, though Paul seemed to keep getting better with age. We'll see how Joe does in his early 30s. Either way, you could make the argument that Joe is the better hitter than Paul... and he's certainly not "Paul Molitor light". It baffles me how Twins fans continually underestimate just how ****ing good Joe Mauer is at the game of baseball. He's in "top five hitting catchers of all time" territory. What do some of you expect from the poor guy? Water into wine? Walking on water?
  16. To pick up an ass-load of starting pitchers, at least one of whom is not awful. As a secondary deal, I can handle the Correia signing. Hell, Ryan doesn't even have to SIGN another pitcher. If he trades Willingham for a starter, I'm fine with that, too. But you can't sign Kevin freakin' Correia, keep guys like Willingham/Morneau, and then say "good enough". You either go get a Jackson/Marcum/Dempster-type pitcher to complement Correia or you liquidate whatever assets you have to get pitching. While I'm patient with the front office, I'm not a fan of half-assing it in hopes of things just "working out". Choose a legitimate course of action and move toward it. I don't care what course of action that may be, just pick something.
  17. If the Padres can afford Jackson, there is no ****ing reason why the Twins shouldn't be in on the bidding. COME ON, Ryan. I can understand not wanting to get involved in a five year deal to a pitcher. But a four year deal to a 28 year old? That's a relatively small risk. The same goes for a three year deal to a 32 year old or a two year deal to a 35 year old.
  18. Don't get me wrong, I still don't like the Correia signing... But if it's part of a bigger plan to solidify the rotation, I can swallow it.
  19. Oddly enough, this gives me a bit of faith in JR. He knows Correia isn't a very good pitcher but had to sign somebody because the Twins need pitchers and lots of 'em. At least we know that Ryan doesn't have unreasonable expectations for Correia in that he's going to be some kind of savior in the rotation. Which hopefully means that he's still pursuing one of the better pitchers left on the market.
  20. Is anyone else having this problem? Dan let me know that it has reappeared but I can't get it to replicate at all from my end. Tested multiple browsers on two machines. Damn it.
  21. See Revere, Ben and Phillies, Philadelphia.
  22. Honestly, I feel the Twins are closer to competing than the Red Sox. They have a much smaller hill to climb to top the Central.
  23. It depends. 1. You're not going to get Marcum. Then yes, I'd definitely go 2/$30m for Dempster. 2. You have a good shot at Marcum or Jackson and you're bidding competitively. Then no, I'd probably hold off on Dempster.
  24. The best you can hope for is one of those guys, I think. And even that is a bit of stretch in the eyes of some.
  25. The Twins have Butera on the roster. I already have one player I irrationally (or rationally, really) hate. I don't need two of those guys.
