  1. Stop dragging arguments from one thread to another, particularly when your name wasn't mentioned in the original post. You weren't the only one making the "players won't sign with bad teams" argument. The forum has descended into little more than personal potshots lately and it needs to stop.
  2. I'm honestly to the point where I believe Ryan should be fired if he passed on one year of Marcum for $10m or less. That's dumb. Idiotic. Ridiculous. Unacceptable. It is not smart baseball management however you look at it. And in the past 15 years, I've never called for Ryan's head. Not once.
  3. I don't disagree with any of that. The team can be better earlier but it will require some luck and/or money.
  4. I want talent. The winning generally follows. Baseball is not the NBA where chemistry and complementary styles of play are needed on the same court. This is baseball, where one guy stands at the plate against one pitcher. No amount of cheering from the bench is going to will Drew Butera into hitting that single to win the game but put Mauer in his place and you suddenly have a 35% chance of getting that single. You're putting waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much stock in scrapppppyness and not enough stock in the ability to actually play the game of ****ing baseball.
  5. He "won" himself a demotion straight into the bullpen. If only we could all be winners like Correia.
  6. I'd be thrilled with that season from Correia. The problem is that I feel even those meager numbers are a bit of a longshot.
  7. Because they have very little correlation with performance would be one explanation. That they have even less worth as a predictive tool is another.
  8. Because the Twins are so woefully short on middle infielders at every level. You have to see if the guy can stick at a middle infield spot (though I agree that they took too long to reach the conclusion that he cannot play short).
  9. No, two guys can't carry an offense. Thankfully, the Twins have four veterans who can post an OPS between 110-140+ (the 2001 squad had four of those guys, period). They have enigmas in Plouffe and Parmelee. They have guys who can help in 2013 in Hicks and Arcia. They have a couple of wildcards in Gibson and Hendriks. Again, you said "best case". The best case is that 3-4 of those guys click in 2013 and the Twins post an 80+ win season. Likely, no. Possible, absolutely. The 2001 team only won 85 games. The team had a lot of potential but the on-field product was just a little north of mediocre.
  10. What if Parmelee posts an .800 OPS? Then what do you do with him? One of the major reasons to trade Revere and Span was to clear space for Parmelee and then Hicks & Co. The Twins need to find out what they have in Chris and you can't do that by refusing to play the guy.
  11. Except that you said "best case" scenario. A best case scenario is that Hicks and Parmelee put up the Koskie/Hunter production while Plouffe covers Mientkiewicz's production. Not likely but not impossible, either. Hunter only had an OPS+ of 102 in 2001. The 2001 Twins didn't have anyone who could put up anything close to a 140 OPS+ season. If Mauer stays healthy, he's close to a lock to do it. If Morneau rebounds at all, he should easily clear 120 OPS+ (he posted a 113 OPS+ in 2012, IIRC) and could approach 130 or better with a solid season. The 2001 Twins didn't have a Willingham or Doumit on the roster, either. Again, I'm not arguing the payroll point at all, merely the timeline. If things break right for the Twins, they'll be competitive in 2013 or 2014, not 2016.
  12. Unless your team sucks at both and tosses out a PTC pitching staff to boot.
  13. I know what you meant. The first winning year with young faces. Still, that year could be 2013 (unlikely) or 2014 (slightly more likely). 2015 is far from a best case situation. The 2000 Twins had Radke and Lawton. The 2013 and beyond Twins have a lot more than that in Mauer, Morneau, Willingham, Doumit, etc.
  14. That too. Hard to do much in the way of "framing" when every pitch is 8 inches from the target.
  15. At best we can hope that 2015 looks like 2000? Hell, I'd say that at best we can hope that 2013 looks like 2000 as Hendriks, Gibson, Arcia, and Hicks come up and play well. If we're talking "at best" situations, that'd be the "best" situation for the team (not to mention that the 2000 team did not have a Mauer or Morneau on the roster). Starting this season, the Twins should have a steady flow of prospects coming through the system. Will they work out and play well right off the bat? Probably not but it's possible that they come up and start playing well a hell of a long time before 2015.
  16. Yep. If you're wild, umps are going to be less generous with their strike zones. If a pitch is borderline and was preceded by three pitches that nearly decapitated the batter, chances are it's going to be ball four.
  17. Horribly. The pitchers don't strike anyone out, have marginal groundball skills, and there's no defense behind them even if they did induce a groundball. As for the outfield, well... They're going to roam that OF like a bunch of drunks at Mardi Gras. Chances are it's going to be a long season.
  18. You tailor the team to fit the stadium, not the other way around.
  19. No doubt about that. The Vikings are a surprise playoff team, the Wolves have Rubio/Love, and the Wild have Parise/Suter. The Twins are the least interesting team by a longshot.
  20. In a perfect world, we'd see a lineup of Hicks/Rosario/Arcia/Sano. Of course, the team will still have Joe Mauer at that point.
  21. All true, but you're comparing a guy who has mashed AA hitting to a guy who hasn't made it out of low A and they're virtually the same age. There's a good chance we see Rosario's K total start rising as he faces good breaking pitches for the first time. And you don't need speed when you hit the ball harder and farther. Arcia does that.
  22. Oh, I agree that catcher metrics are pretty awful at this point. Butera definitely gains back some of that offensive ineptitude with his glove. But it can't be enough to offset his horrible, awful, terrible bat. There's just no way a player can make up 200 OPS points with a glove. At the major league level, everybody is pretty good and there's just not enough room to be that much better in one facet of the game to make up for a glaring deficit as large as Drew's bat.
  23. Less. Less. LESS. People who believe otherwise need to take another look at Snepp's screenshot. Butera is historically bad with the stick. It would be hard to overcome that deficit if he was not only an above-average catcher but also pitched the ball to himself at a league-average clip.
