    All of this and then some. Mauer was younger, more valuable, and position players tend to fair better (especially contact hitters like Joe) through a career. Through their careers, Mauer has averaged one more win a season.

    Three month rentals of mediocre first basemen don't return top 100 prospects, much less top 10 prospects. Lets just put that idea to bed now.

    I wasn't clear with that post... I meant "you can get mid-round talent any other year", not that the Twins should underslot in later years. I view underslot drafting as a good thing in the case of the Astros. They need bodies and lots of 'em. Their Major League roster is awful, their minors were in even worse shape, and they just needed talent... Piles and piles of talent. So drafting underslot and picking up as many talented players as possible makes a lot of sense. You're sacrificing a little top-flight talent, sure... But you're making up for it with pure numbers, something the Astros need badly to compete before 2020. The Twins aren't in that situation. They have Major League talent. They have a loaded farm system. What they need are top-flight players, not a pile of mid-round players who may or may not be above-average Major League players. Plus, the Astros will always get another shot at a top-five pick next season. They're bloody awful and should be in no rush to compete. The Twins? This is their last shot at a top pick for a few years unless something goes disastrously wrong. That's why I think blowing your last opportunity at top-five talent is utter foolishness. The only exception being that the Twins don't like any of the players in the top five (which is unlikely), in which case it makes sense to drop a few slots and pick up the guy you want the most. If the Twins are left in a "meh" situation with the fourth pick, I guess underslotting isn't the worst thing in the world... But given past drafts, I don't know if that's going to happen.

    I listend to Carneal a fair amount... I wouldn't put him on the level of Scully but he was certainly very good. There's just something about Scully's dulcet voice and his ability to describe on-field elements so vividly that puts him in his own class of announcing.

    This. WAR isn't meant to be used in small sizes like that... So to "disprove" the metric, somebody uses it that way and screams "THIS SUCKS". It's akin to buying a blender and then taking it back to the store, screaming that it didn't toast your bread.

    Go back and listen to vintage Vin Scully if you want to learn how a PBP announcer SHOULD sound. He may not tell you everything that happens on the field but somehow, you just know what's happening anyway. One of the few things I miss about Los Angeles is listening to Scully a few times a week.

    The difference is that Arcia has never given any reason to question his ability to move up a level. Hicks spent two years at AA. Arcia spent three months in AA at a younger age and outperformed Hicks with the bat (by a pretty healthy margin). And then Oswaldo went to AAA and put up video game numbers.

    No, I wouldn't have had an issue either way. It was a borderline move and I can see the merit of either decision.

    I don't think I'll ever understand their lack of September call-ups last season. Bizarre.

    I don't think they did anything wrong with Arcia. He only received 299 PAs with New Britain last season and started the season in Ft Myers. By the time they were considering a move, it was probably late enough in the season where they said "Meh, why bother?" with the expectation that he would start the following season in Rochester. If Arcia garnered 400+ PAs at a level last season, I might agree that he was promoted too slowly. But when he doesn't even accumulate 300 PAs after making one of the most significant level jumps in the minor leagues, I don't have any problems with how they handled him last season.

    Are we still concerned with the "slow promotion Twins" at this point? Because last time I checked, Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Arcia are in Minnesota. Buxton will be here when they feel he's ready... Which will probably be relatively soon if he continues blistering baseball all over the stadium.

    When your team looks to be on the upswing, you don't blow your last chance at a top five pick by drafting down to spend more in the later rounds, something you can do every other year you draft. The Twins front office would have to be certifiably stupid to even consider such a thing.

    In cases like Sanchez, I wonder how he would have responded to a 4/$75m deal. I'd rather have him for four years at more money than five, I think. Especially given the short-to-mid term payroll situation with the Twins.

    His improvements aren't that significant in the stat line (and overall, he's still sub-par) but they're enough to give him a couple more weeks to stay with the team, I think. If he's still posting an OPS under .500 on June 1st, then I'd seriously consider sending him down.
