  1. Ah, gotcha. Fair enough. I assumed it was talking about the past based on the title.
  2. I've watched most of Worley's starts this season and I often closed the game window confused after his start. He seemed to pitch okay... So why was his final line so awful? He was locating, getting a lot of groundballs, doing what we expected him to do, yet he'd finish with a 5-6 IP night and 4-5 runs allowed. Pelfrey looked awful in his starts. Worley often didn't. Good job on pointing out some statistics why that seemed to be the case, Nick.
  3. In case you missed it, this thread used "were" in the title, which I assume means the 2008-2010 period in which both players were extended.
  4. Yes. Absolutely. With 100% certainty. Mauer and Morneau were two of the best young hitters in all of baseball. You can't predict what happened to Morneau. It's awful, sad, horrible, blah blah blah... But mostly, it's just chance. And it's the kind of risk you take by giving two baseball players a lot of money and trying to win.
  5. I didn't realize he was engaged. In that case, I declare Occam's Razor.
  6. Seriously. You didn't really just say that. How would doing something like this not be scary? Should he just ignore right-wing nuts who say every awful thing they can about him during the 24 hour news cycle? Should he just ignore the hate mail that he is surely receiving at this point? Going from "mostly ignored veteran" to "ambassador of gay rights in 2013" is terrifying no matter how you look at it. Just because it's easier to do this at the end of his career does not mean it's easy for him to do it.
  7. Lineups: Twins: Jamey Carroll 2B Joe Mauer C Josh Willingham LF Justin Morneau 1B Trevor Plouffe 3B Ryan Doumit DH Oswaldo Arcia RF Aaron Hicks CF Pedro Florimon SS (Pedro Hernandez P) Red Sox: Jacoby Ellsbury CF Shane Victorino RF Dustin Pedroia 2B David Ortiz DH Mike Napoli 1B Jonny Gomes LF Jarrod Saltalamacchia C Stephen Drew SS Pedro Ciriaco 3B (Allen Webster P)
  8. Some of us won't. Don't assume you can fit everyone under one convenient umbrella to suit your argument. Besides, I thought they should have spent more last offseason... They just needed to spend it on short-term contracts.
  9. If you want to assume the negative of the situation, sure, I guess that's possible. But what is more likely is that he's making a statement near the end of his career. He no longer has to fear facing hostile crowds for ten seasons and no longer has to fear teammates being unaccepting of his lifestyle. He's probably more comfortable with who he is as a person and his family is surely financially secure at this point. Doing something like this has to be scary as hell... I've known plenty of people who came out and it was terrifying for them and they didn't have to do it on the national stage and automatically become part of the civil rights movement because of it. It makes all the sense in the world why he would do this as his career is nearing its end and I doubt it has much to do with "I want my contract extended" and more to do with "this is who I am as a person and after years of hiding, I want to be honest about it". With Collins being a multi-millionaire with very little left to prove at this point, what do you think is the more likely scenario?
  10. Lineups: Twins: Jamey Carroll SS Joe Mauer DH Josh Willingham LF Justin Morneau 1B Trevor Plouffe 3B Ryan Doumit C Chris Parmelee RF Wilkin Ramirez CF Brian Dozier 2B (Scott Diamond P) Red Sox: Jacoby Ellsbury CF Shane Victorino RF Dustin Pedroia 2B David Ortiz DH Mike Napoli 1B Jonny Gomes LF Will Middlebrooks 3B Stephen Drew SS David Ross C (Ryan Dempster P)
  11. A fair assessment, though Plouffe has far more opportunities to bungle plays on a nightly basis than Willingham, whose nights often consist of "field ball rolling to me" or "catch ball falling at me" three or four times a game.
  12. Assuming that Pitch f/x is at least consistent, the rest can be overpowered by sheer numbers. The real question is "how many numbers are needed?" And given the tendency of catchers to catch the same guys for several years (thereby maintaining a positive/negative influence of a particular pitcher), my guess would be "a lot".
  13. More importantly, it doesn't matter one bit going forward. What matters is if Plouffe is hitting the ball or not. And he has been doing that recently.
  14. Now I'm going to leave it that way just to spite you.
  15. I really have nothing to say, I just want to take the Twins Daily post count lead from Seth.
  16. Ugh. RISP stats in early May. Sooner or later, the law of averages will factor in and Plouffe will begin to start getting those hits with runners on base. History has shown it to be the case nearly 100% of the time.
  17. To clarify on my Sanchez point, I don't think it's a terrible deal. I'm not against the Twins pursuing a Sanchez-type player, but with a few caveats: - Try to offer him $17m for four years instead of $15m for five - It wasn't right for 2013. Acquiring a Sanchez-type is good for an 85 win team that needs that one guy to win - None of this matters because I fear that Ryan is averse to doing even that
  18. Unfortunately, I think Benson may have already slid into non-prospect territory.
  19. And you'll be hard-pressed to find many Twins fans around here who like that "alternative".
  20. Hah! Look, I was one of the loudest advocates for signing decent guys at more money than Correia/Pelfrey in hopes that it might be enough to push the Twins toward mediocrity and maybe with a bit of luck, the playoffs. But I can't advocate taking a 96 loss team and adding Greinke. It's such a waste and hurts the team when it actually has a legitimate shot at winning (not hopes and dreams).
  21. No, I don't want Sanchez at five years, $88m. I don't think that's a good contract. Anibal is a good, not great, pitcher and I think he could turn into a $15m albatross in the later years of that deal.
