He slid into first vs the Giant on friday. The throw was low and the first baseman missed it. It hit Punto's ribs and stopped the ball from rolling into the dugout and letting the game-tying run score. If he had stood up, they tie the game and have a shot at winning it. It looks like he's trying hard by sliding into first, but it's not always the best play. And personally, I don't think it's any faster. Just my random 2 cents.
