The Philadelphia Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent in 1960. He reached the Major Leagues in 1967 as a member of the Detroit Tigers. The Minnesota Twins acquired him in 1978, after he had brief stints with the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers.

He led the American League with 32 saves in in 1979, also leading the league with 90 relief appearances. This helped him finish fifth in the Cy Young voting. It was his fourth career top five Cy Young finish. His 1980 season was a disappointment, pitching to a 6.12 ERA in his age 37 season.

He finished his career with the New York Mets in 1981, owning a 2.61 ERA over 20 appearances.
