Miller: Gardenhire An Influence on Mike Redmond

With the Twins facing the Marlins today, Phil Miller talked with Mike Redmond about what he learned from Gardenhire, and with Gardenhire about how Redmond prepared to become a coach. Redmond praised Gardenhire's loyalty to his players:

"He's loyal to guys. He backed his players up. He got thrown out of a lot of games to back his players up," Redmond said. "Players always knew, when you're out there competing, grinding, that he had their backs. That's huge in this game, and that's one thing I learned from him."

I like Redmond a lot, and feel like he could be a very good coach. But I gotta say, I don't think this Marlins gig is going to go too well for him. It isn't just the cutbacks. It's also that the front office and ownership seem to be fairly miserable.

Love Red-dog. I really hoped he'd come back to MN and join the staff in some way. I hope he does well in Miami. I will be pulling for him.

That's a tough situation for Redmond but it is where he started his career as a player and he has good attitude to rise on top of that situation. I think that having a fresh start and not a whole bunch of overpaid veterans will help him as well... The expectations are pretty low in Miami. About as low as in the Twin Cities. See them get together a good couple months and the tide might change over there...

Boy do I miss this guy. If anything, he kept the likes of Drew Butera from seeing the playing field.
