Mlb weathered the storm of the early covid scare. Aside from a few flare ups here and there, I can’t imagine the playoffs not happening. And I also can’t imagine this pitching staff winning a pennant. Maeda is the only starter I’d trust in a playoff game. And really there isn’t a close second.

 

I think it's most likely that they'll get played, but there's certainly a non-zero chance that it won't. And even if it does, there's plenty of scenarios where things get adjusted or a key player or two tests positive at the wrong time. Add in the wacko three-game first round, and I just think there's too much uncertainty to make major adjustments to the roster. 

 

We're whining about all the places where they're not playing up to potential, but they're still within a game of having the best record in the league. The team ERA is No. 2 in the league. Maeda, Berrios, and Dobnak are all in the top 20 in fWar among starters, and several of the guys ahead of them are on teams that won't make the playoffs.

 

I'm high on Maeda too. But I think Berrios will spend more of the rest of the year looking like last night than like the two previous starts. Dobnak is unproven, but has been great. They are already a lock for the playoffs, so they can to be able to work with Odo, Hill, Pineda, and even Hill to bring them along as they want. 

 

Bauer would clearly improve that mix. But I just don't think he's so much of an improvement that I want to give up anything of value.
